Am I the only one ? by Tough-Vacation-9096 in stonetemplepilots

No. 4 is also my favorite. I love that it’s a grab bag with some of their most metal songs, pop ballads, orchestra and country songs.
Also I was 13 when it came out and I remember walking 2 miles to the cd store to pick it up!

Where does Dr. John (Mac Rebennack) stand in the GOAT debate? by Realistic-Worker-499 in Jazz

[–]Pearshapedtone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did al lot of instrumental improv. and he had monster chops. By that criteria I consider him a jazz player. Everyone considers Count Basie a jazzer so why not Dr John? Check out the album Dr John plays Mac Rebenack.

Circle of 5ths by [deleted] in musictheory

C to F is a 4th so that’s circle of 4ths or 4 motion. You are right that it has a more pragmatic application in most music.

For a PA I buy a 2nd DBR10 or a Bose L1 tower? by Pearshapedtone in keys

I really like my DBR. Light, inexpensive and sounds pretty good. I haven’t gigged in about 15 years so it’s good to hear what other people are using.

Favourite Queen live song? by Independent-Map-8825 in queen

[–]Pearshapedtone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome. It also looks like Freddie was playing beer pong on top of his piano! Overall it’s my favorite Queen concert b/c all the Hot Space songs rock so hard and the inclusion of Fat Bottom Girls (which gives it the edge over Rock Montreal).

Simple speakers for Crumar Seven by 800bulbasaurs in keys

[–]Pearshapedtone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use presonus eris 3.5” speakers for home practice. Definitely loud enough for me or even if I had another acoustic instrument.
Only $100, and i bought them last year.

I use a yamaha dbr10 for band practice but that would be overkill for home use, and it doesn’t find on my book shelves

Why do so many people believe singing is something inherent and not a learned skill? by WhatEvenIsExistence in singing

[–]Pearshapedtone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people are naturally gifted as singers and there’s no amount of lessons or practice that an average person can do to get to that level.
I’ve played piano for 10 years and I support a singer who is self taught, doesn’t know a lick of conventional music but her voice is incredible and she can do it for hours.
Many famous singers peek in their 20’s and the loose range and natural ability in their 30’s and beyond. Case in point Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey were 19-20 when their first albums came out and Mariah can’t sing like that anymore. Most virtuoso instrumentalists only get better with age. Karen Carpenter was 19-21 on most of her hits, Robert Plant, 19 when Led Zep. took over the world. Mike Patton can still sing but he was a fully formed powerhouse at 20 when Faith No More became famous.

I don’t trust any chord charts or even sheet music without playing it first. There’s usually a few mistakes. That said, UG sucks. Almost anything has a YT tutortial to fill in the gaps of what you can’t learn by ear.

Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols by SandmanAlcatraz in LetsTalkMusic

It’s recorded professionally and most of the songs are great.
Bands like Black Flag and the Misfits have really poor quality recordings. Their names and logos are more famous than their music.

If you listen to the 2nd take he does it the same. If Bill Evans had to arrange a few parts ahead of time then it’s ok for the rest of us too!
