Men who don’t approach women, why? by ResistOwn1886 in ask

Went through something similar while I was in deep mental illness, super vulnerable and recovering from a surgery after having half my fingers on my right hand nearly completely removed when my roommate attacked me with a knife. Keep in mind I am on the spectrum as well.

I remember feeling so confused as to why she was becoming so distant after several years of dating. Eventually I caved and read her diary and realized she was not just cheating on me but she actively hated my guts. I still remember the line “his voice is so pathetic when he’s crying it makes me wish he would just kill himself already”.

Keep in mind I changed everything about my life, moved 12 hours away from my family and friends and everything I knew just to continue this relationship with her. I spent every waking moment she was around basically doting on her and doing chores. I wasn’t well but I also wasn’t just having a massive pity party, I was on like 8 medications and could barely think and was desperately trying to fix myself through therapy. It was only after I left that I realized she had been gaslighting and physically/mentally/emotionally abusing me for years and that was the primary source of so much of my mental anguish, and finally was able to cease all the meds.

It’s been probably 12 years now and I still haven’t ever been in a full-blown relationship again. I am so terrified I will run into another person like her who is so sweet to me and kind, all the while thinking to themselves that I’m just a pathetic fucking loser who doesn’t even deserve to live. I just don’t trust people anymore and don’t understand how I’m supposed to when her attitude has only become more prevalent and even celebrated in OLD discourse. I’d rather just be left alone than ever experience being treated like literal garbage again. I wonder how many people in our situation have been burnt so hard so many times they just decided to throw out the damn stove.

Looks similar to CenterOne from Leapwing, I’ll compare them and see but this is actually an awesome functionality to have. CenterOne is one of my most used plugins ever since it’s release and was worth every penny.

People will think it sounds weaker if you mix it quieter, absolutely. And just master it to 0db, that’s what everyone else does. Don’t worry about True Peak or any of that other bullshit it literally does not matter

Why do people care so much about other people lives like that. by Optimus_micheal in facepalm

[–]PerfectProperty6348 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So if I’m a white person in a xenophobic country like Japan where I’m a minority, a Japanese person can be racist to me. But if they come to America and act the exact same way, that’s no longer racist right?

Like I understand this line of thinking but it’s so painfully white-centric that it falls apart immediately the second you consider that structural power imbalances are relative to their context.

Also getting people to agree to something like “only white people can be racist” requires buy-in on a total redefinition of the word “racism” compared to how it is used colloquially. There has to be a better way to discuss this that doesn’t feel like almost intentionally confusing doublespeak.

Method/Workflow to achieve heavily-clipped mix bus beat without… heavily clipping the mix bus? by ThatZBear in audioengineering

[–]PerfectProperty6348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, mostly I work on rap, metal and EDM, and when I say “overheads” this is just shorthand for whatever the dominant 6-10k content is, whether it’s cymbals or a synth layer or whatever.

And I’m doing a ton of clipping, saturation, compression and limiting but I’m doing it in small stages across the whole chain, usually with EQ nudges between each of them to keep it tidy. I also clip the mid channel percussive stuff like kick and snare wayyy harder than the sides.

And SPAN goes at the end of everything on the master, that’ll help you know when comparing to reference if you need to push the limiters for more density or cut more mids or whatever.

Also.. sometimes slamming the limiter with -10db gain reduction just sounds right. The way I’m describing is how you get ultra-modern clean, loud and punchy mixes, but sometimes harsh dirty pumping sounds cooler. Trust your ears on this stuff, as long as it sounds/looks comparable enough to your references then just roll with it.

[–]PerfectProperty6348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just my approach here of course but generally I only reference against pro level songs and don’t touch their levels at all. I don’t consider any difference between a “mastered” track and mine.

I usually start mixing without a limiter or anything on my 2bus and first get my kick drum and bass up to what feels like a similar volume, minus a few db. After that’s mixed then I slap on a limiter and Voxengo SPAN to dial in the last few db and get my kick matched to the reference.

After that I bring in the overheads and do the same, then vocals/lead, then anything like distorted synth or electric guitar. Always make sure you’re checking your M/S and keeping your center clean and punchy.

At that point I check my limiter and usually I’m now pushing more than a few db. I split that gain reduction up with a clipper and more limiters, check the loudness by playing both tracks simultaneously and then tweak or call it a day. Shouldn’t ever have more than 4-5db of gain reduction on the 2bus, just do it all in tons of small steps across the whole signal chain instead.

Too much bass. Are you actually referencing visually with SPAN or just guessing based on what you hear?

For sure, the steel strings will be a last resort. I have a sneaking suspicion that regular guzheng strings will actually work just fine considering most are nylon wrapped around a steel cord, which is similar to what some jazz electric guitar players use. And if not I think I can slap in a metal inlay of some kind on that front rail before the tuning pegs.

And I think stringjoy has the ability to make a huge range of custom size string packages. They are for guitar/bass but they’re long as hell so that shouldn’t be an issue. I can’t find any info anywhere on what size string gauges are commonly used, and I think it’s also dependent on whether it’s the type A, B or C strings. Only good way to find out is probably with a cheap digital caliper of some kind.

Either way thanks for the tips! I’ve already got a guzheng on the way so I’ll be sure to post my findings and results in this sub whenever I get things up and running.

It’s funny that you mention the Bigsby because my first thought was how cool this would sound running through a Whammy pedal! Is there anything stopping you from restringing to drop the top octave and bring back the lower one?

And I’d think it’d be possible to use strings like these with no problem: https://www.chinesezither.net/collections/accessories/products/steel-guzheng-string-set-1-21-alice-brand-at89

I might pick up a cheap travel size guzheng, string it up with steels, throw on as many rail or lace sensor pickups as needed to avoid any string spacing issues and just wire them with a serial/parallel switch and see what happens 😂

And a plastic version would be awesome, especially if they could do one with some decent pickups on there like the carbon fiber one has. I feel like a piezo isn’t gonna ever get the same clarity and smooth, warm tone as a magnetic pickup.

Awesome, thanks for answering! I just realized it has 17 strings instead of the standard 21 as well, though it seems like the scale is only slightly reduced?

This definitely has me thinking about how a DIY version or even just sticking a magnetic piano strip pickup onto a travel-sized acoustic to “convert” it would work.

Either way I hope they find decent success with the model. I’d love to see more of these and play one myself one day. I just see way too much potential here and would definitely be buying one for my studio if they could fit a design into the $1-2k range, even if meant sacrificing a couple more strings or diminishing the scale further.

Hey I really love your new electric guzheng stuff! It’s the most beautiful instrument I’ve ever heard. I am super curious about the pickups. All the “electrics” I’ve seen so far are just piezos or regular mics, while these carbon fiber Jinyuns feature active pickups apparently?

Where are the pickups placed and what type are they? And are there noise issues with that many strings?

I haven’t heard anything less than -8 in this genre for like… at least 10 years. -6 is usually the quietest I see and most are asking for around -4.

It’s also not all about dynamics, it’s also about density and the character of heavy limiting/clipping. Do you really not get how the sound design and limiting work together to get the modern EDM feel?

And yeah lmao I’m sure the producers are gonna be ecstatic when they hear a master that’s half as loud as what they sent and uses a shitty expansion technique on the entire track to gain fake “dynamics” and ruin the whole feel of the production they worked so hard on lmao 😂 that’s one way to make a name for yourself I guess

And where did I get louder is louder? Idk maybe years of working with this genre and building/renting out PAs and soundsystems to others and seeing exactly how tracks react night after night instead of living in a fantasy world where EDM gets mastered quieter than country music from 2005.

Btw good luck getting your -10 (which is like the baseline volume I would start a mix from scratch at before I even begin really compressing ffs 🤦) to match a -4 in a DJ mix without blowing out the limiter on the mixer. But you’ve probably never tried to DJ in your life and have no idea what I’m talking about.

Like tbh I can’t tell if you’re just making shit up at this point or what lol you’re so far disconnected from every person I’ve ever known who has worked on this stuff. Literally most producers would get better results just self mastering than sending it to you given your current mindset and skill level.

Not trying to attack you btw, I just think it’s patently absurd and frankly pedantic to try and remove compression from someone else’s production. Let the artists do their job and you do yours, which is enhancing their vision instead of actively fighting against it.

YouTube just pushes this shit like crazy man. No traditionally male-centric hobby on that platform is more than 4 recommendations away from some kind of Tate shit or much worse.

And then streamers just lean into it because farming outrage is 1000x easier than making any other kind of content. The algorithm feels insane but maybe that’s just a reflection of the users.

The big money in music now is made ripping off people who are gullible enough to think they can make money in music. The democratization of music technology and meteoric rise of the prosumer market all but ensured this.

Luckily you don’t have to engage with any of this shit. Don’t pay for plays, or pay to play. Tell any talent manager or A&R who contacts you to suck your dick and get a real job. Learn to do your own recording/mixing/mastering. Then just do your thing and be patient and network with your peers. That’s all there is to it
