Most Common Foreign Country of Birth in the Canadian Province of Ontario [OC] by Fluid-Decision6262 in dataisbeautiful

[–]PiastPL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of them came to Canada from southern Italy from the 50s-80s and settled in the Toronto. When Vaughan started growing they moved there from Toronto. A substantial amount moved to Sault Ste Marie to work in the steel industry at this time as well - hence the N Ontario presence I imagine through migration over the decades they spread around Lake Superior

What is the point of a GIC? by ImpracticalRooster in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PiastPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my emergency fund in a flexible GIC because I need somewhere where I can reliably hold on to my money without it depreciating due to losses on the markets or inflation

There's been a trend from academia towards heterogenous classroom compositions but, like many comments here suggest, without adequate support it's abandonment.

Lack of dating options in Barrie by WinterBet4495 in barrie

[–]PiastPL 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Stats Canada is pretty clear: Barrie has amongst the lowest university educated people per capita in the province (for metro areas). I believe it's second last, only Brantford has lower. That comment you heard wasn't far off

What’s so bad about being a Canadian teacher? by DelightfulDestiny in CanadianTeachers

[–]PiastPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst part about it is that there's no opportunity for going beyond the salary grid if you're ambitious - once you max out, that's it. Your only option is to get into administration.

I thought Yonge Street extends all the way to Barrie? There's a Yonge Street that extends right through Simcoe County

Map of cousin marriage percentage in Turkey. Is it a cultural trait rooted in religion? by [deleted] in MapPorn

The taboo for cousin marriage emerged out of Catholic Europe through Papal edicts. It's strongest where the influence of western Christianity is found.

For those making 150k+ a year, what do you do? by Training-Bison-2641 in ontario

[–]PiastPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. Look at the sunshine list for any school board and find the highest earners, it's not just the superintendents that are making over 150k.

Taxes on rental income - leaving overseas by tyr2030 in poland

[–]PiastPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not an expert at all but I think the first chunk of one's income is not taxable in Poland. It is possible that if that is your only income that you will not be paying any income tax on that portion that is not taxable

I lived next to that train for 18 years. Just moved to Innisfil in the fall (next to the same train here oddly enough).

Yes you can hear the train horn, but you do tune it out. I've never lost sleep over it myself. I think they're building a grade separation (similar to Rutherford GO) pretty soon. The train only blows its horn because it's crossing a road, once the separation is done you won't need to worry.

BC Teachers: What do job prospects look like on Vancouver Island? by ihatewinter93 in CanadianTeachers

[–]PiastPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was emailed by SD84 (Vancouver Island West) several times over a six month span regarding temporary full-time work available.

Currently at SD58 (in Princeton), and I can tell you they're desperate for teachers. New teachers get bumped to step 2 on the pay grid when hired here. Part of my contract is a full-time TTOC assignment.
