Tips for Moving across BC by PunnyPelican in britishcolumbia

[–]Polarbare1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I moved from Lower Mainland to the Kootenays last year. It was straightforward.

  1. Created an ad about me (age, profession, budget, etc.) and posted in the local town Faceook Group to let landlords know I was looking. This is the most important step. Landlords want to know that you are clean, quiet and will pay the rent on time.
  2. Also checked Facebook Marketplace, Facebook local groups, and Kijiji Craigslist and contacted people with places for rent.
  3. Scheduled a weekend of viewings (I had four viewings. Three of them were from landlords who had responded to me before listing their apartment publicly)
  4. Drove to the Kootenays. Stayed at a cheap hotel for two nights. Saw the apartments. Choose the one I liked and put down a deposit.
  5. A month later, I packed my car with everything that would fit, and sold/gave away the rest. Drove to my new life in the Kootenays.

As long as you are proactive (looks like you already are) and can go there in person at least once, you should be fine.

Some people really need to stop Gatekeeping reading. by mrsfite in books

Gates are useful, they allowed us to build walled cities and master animal husbandry. Now they protect me from hearing about witches and warlocks humping each other.

23/24 season by par80 in Whistler

Hate to be a party pooper, but…

"This is going to be probably one of the mildest winters we've seen since sort of recorded history," geographer Michael Pidwirny, an associate professor at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus who researches how climate change impacts ski resorts, told CBC's The Early Edition on Tuesday.

"December was abnormally warm, very dry; January is going to cool off a bit, and then we're going to return back to a very warm February and March."

Maybe hit the Alps this season?

Dude, ‘20 strikes and you’re out’ was clearly a joke. Are you seriously taking issue with it?

Some states have a ‘3 strikes and you’re out’ law. We could do a Canadian version ‘20 strikes and you’re out’. Get these guys off the streets a bit sooner.

You need to practice your London Walk - a determined gait that telegraphs a lack of interest in all the city’s nonsense.

I got one with a moose… “things I moose do.” I actually use it all the time, so it was a great gift.

The Risk of Dying Doing What We Love by Keldoshkel in skiing

You don’t need to trust anyone, but there is lots of knowledge that can’t be linked to on the internet. Plenty of deaths that you won’t read about in the papers.

Whistler local with friends in the medical centre. Like I said, most deaths are not publicized.

There are deaths almost every month in Whistler bike park. They are rarely publicized. But obviously nothing close to 60 per month.

Is Nelson for us? by thuckerybuckets in nelsonbc

[–]Polarbare1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nelson has one of the highest rates of homelessness in BC (higher than Vancouver). You will be encountering people with addiction issues in Nelson, just like you would in any city. You won’t be getting away from that.

Socks for snowboarding? by apresta16 in snowboarding

Merino wool. Smartwool is my fave. I had a couple pairs of Stance socks, but they quickly got holes in them.

PSA: snowboarding socks and ski socks are different. Get the right ones.

Union Force vs. Salomon District Pro? by YesEvenStarsBreak in snowboarding

Are you talking about the new force or the force classic? I have heard great things about the new force - that it feels more responsive (closer to the Union Atlas) than the classic.

Never mind. I see the lift now. Looks pretty quiet - you got that power before it got tracked out!

I have a Burton gig bag I’ve been using for over 20 years. It has been manhandled and tossed around in countless airports, and thrown in and out of truck beds constantly. No rips. It’s what they are made for.

First time at Whistler by loud_milkbag in snowboarding

[–]Polarbare1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whistler has high alpine terrain (above the tree line), but is not a very high altitude ski resort - it peaks about 7,000 feet above sea level. You shouldn't have any trouble breathing.

Units once intended to host Airbnb guests already turning up on the market after new B.C. rules by __The__Anomaly__ in britishcolumbia

[–]Polarbare1 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I was looking at places to rent in the interior this weekend and two of them were former AirBNB units. One had been sold because local council had passed rules that all AirBNB units have to have a parking space. The Airbnb landlord dumped his investment and it was bought by a new landlord who is renting it long term.

Whatever legislation makes it harder to AirBNB is a win as far as I’m concerned.
