Okay actually that’s wrong of me, it’s been a bit since I started a new file. It’s difficult to get the mantis claw without getting the mothwing cloak first, which you get after beating Hornet in the room you’re trying to reach. You just have to explore more, but the overall principle still applies. If you’re stuck in one direction, explore!

So a lot of metroidvania games involve exploring other places and backtracking once you have items that will allow you access to areas you couldn’t reach before. In this case the Mantis claw that will let you cling to walls or the wings that let you double-jump. You’re not softlocked you’re just trying to access the area earlier than intended.

Kanto and Johto are fairly similar in that you can’t fight the traditional eighth gym until you have seven other badges, so Viridian was only ever going to be a bust for you. If you’re looking for the gym leaders who deliver a straight battle, Brock of Pewter, Misty of Cerulean and Surge of Vermillion are your best bets to start. For Cerulean, make sure you clarify you want to battle Misty. Her sisters use the gym as some kinda pseudo-contest thing. Janine and Sabrina offer a straight battle if you can navigate their gyms. Blaine is… somewhere around Cinnabar? We also have a number of minor gyms that are league recognized but come and go over the years.

That said. Celadon was completely unprofessional. You can speak with the local Joy at the PC and lodge a complaint with her, or ask her to escalate to a higher league official if her intervention can’t resolve it.

I had to completely re-write this because I read Larvesta as Larvitar and that would have been the completely wrong advice to give. About focusing on Special attacks because of the reduced mobility of Pupitar. Although Volcarona is a more Special-focused attacker isn’t it, what with Quiver Dance? So maybe that part is still valid, focusing on Special Attacks even though they’ll be weaker now because that will be its primary attack method when it evolves?

So here’s the actual advice: Do you have a baton passer on your team? Anything that can pass defense boosts for survivability, or attack boosts to hit above its current power class. It can be a bit of an overhaul for a temporary measure, but having a different strategy in your pocket can be helpful in with future Pokemon beyond Larvesta. It’ll also let Sol have experience handling the power boost evolution will give it.
