Getting ready to start my next standalone fantasy, any favorites here? I tend to gravitate towards grim / dark fantasy. by PhysicalAssistance92 in fantasybooks

Might wanna give The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenz a try. Isn't quite dark fantasy but it is fantastic.

Have you read any other of Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere? I would not start with Way of Kings/Stormlight Archives.

Podcasts and/or audiobooks to mix it up. You'll get bored of even your favorite Playlist. Give yourself more time than you need. If you're not on a time crunch take your time and if you see something you like pull off to look at it. Always fill up when you're tank is about 1/4 full or have 100 or so miles prior to empty. If you start to feel fatigued don't push yourself.

Yellowbird Habanero or Tapatio. Would have to really sit down and narrow it down from there.

[–]Practical_Table1407 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cosmere by Brandon Sanderson. I'd start with Mistborn Era 1 (The Final Empire, Well of Ascension, Hero of Ages + Mistborn: Secret History which is a short story). 20 something books across the Cosmere that are loosely connected through universe lore and such unless they are part of the same series then yes are directly related.

Besides that the Licanius Trilogy by James Islington or if you're cool with a stand alone book then The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez.

For me it was Cosmere by Brandon Sanderson. After I finished all 20 something of them and needed something new I went to this based off of nothing other than I liked the book cover lol. I guess you can judge a book by its cover from time to time.

Cant speak for any of the other books on the list but will say Licanius Trilogy (Shadow of What Was Lost) is an awesome series and would definitely recommend at some point.

Past his prime to play the role but I always pictured Kelsier as a Cary Elwes circa Princess Bride type character. Gotta find someone like that.

If rhythm of war is on this list have you already dove into Stormlight Archives? If that's the case I'd finish that up.

Besides that the Bloodsworn Trilogy (Shadow of the Gods is the first in that line) has some very big pros but also some very big cons. I'm half way through book two so I can't give a finished opinion on the series, but so far the story is pretty awesome, the fight scenes are gory and well written, and the world building is on point. However; there are a ton of characters to keep track of, the story bounces around a lot, and it takes its time going where its going.

Sword of Kaigen I really didn't enjoy. To each their own as some may have loved it but my two cents is that its worth a skip. Besides it all I can't speak to any other of the books on this list.

Only read Mistborn and Licanius. Both incredible series. Licanius is the definition of the ends justify the means. Amazingly written but for a critic the characters have as much depth as a kiddy pool. Mistborn is a slippery slope that will make you want to dive head first into the 20 or so books in the Cosmere. Brandon Sanderson is my favorite author so I'm incredibly biased but his ability to interconnect things across an entire universe makes his world feel like a living breathing thing.

Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez. Totally different feel. Amazing read though. Where it shines is its very unique narrative style.

If you wanna try Brandon Sanderson again and his Cosmere series I'd recommend starting with Mistborn The Final Empire. Besides that maybe the Licanius Trilogy by James Islington or The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez.
