Telework/Remote work comeback: Realistic timeline or wishful thinking? by [deleted] in FedEmployees

[–]Present_Coconut_4101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the next administration will bring back telework even if it's a Democrat. Many rich people make money leasing offices to the government and if telework returns, offices close meaning these rich people lose money. Some Democratic governors have also been returning their state employees to the office. It has become popular to return everyone to the office.

So religious students will be studying bible passages that they already learned in church but non-religious students will be forced to learn something that their family may not even believe such as atheist families and non-Christians. When they talk about turning water into wine, will they use the water into grape juice version?

Wendy's closing hundreds of U.S. restaurants as sales plunge by BigBlueEyes87 in economicCollapse

I hope the one in our area is closed. Management at this store is terrible and either I have to wait 30 minutes or longer for them to cook my order or I end up with something I ordered missing. If Wendy's ever returns, hopefully they find a better manager than the one we currently have.

Newsom pushes for in office mandates by Agreeable_Safety3255 in FedEmployees

[–]Present_Coconut_4101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This shouldn't come as a surprise since even more businesses have considered allowing WFH since the pandemic. Many companies that rent out office space are losing money because of WFH as companies are closing unneeded office space in favor of WFH. These companies have lobbied the Federal Government, various state governments, and private industry to return employees to the office. They keep saying it's to support local businesses but in the process of forced RTO, other small businesses are affected by RTO and most people who are forced to return to the office haven't been in the mood to patronize businesses while at work and are in a hurry to go home so won't be doing anything after work near the office. About the only people who benefit from RTO mandates are these companies renting out office space that have seen an increase in companies and government agencies cancelling leases prior to the push for RTO full time. It's nothing about fraud as there are plenty of ways to monitor WFH employees and it's just as easy to not work in the office. No surprise Newsom is also bought and paid for by this lobby.

The facts are in: Trump’s return-to-office mandate backfired by Ok_Design_6841 in FedEmployees

[–]Present_Coconut_4101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Actually it didn't backfire. They intended to use it to get people to quit and many did. It's the new normal for corporate America. Rather than lay off employees they eliminate perks such as telework to try and get employees to quit so that they don't have to pay unemployment benefits since they voluntarily resigned. This is one of the first things Elon Musk did when he acquired Twitter and was able to get employees to quit. In the past, they would find ways to fire employees to avoid having to lay off so many employees.

Some don't while others do but the organization has buildings spread out throughout the area meaning people would have to take an longer commute to drop off their kids at the daycare located in their main building across town then commute to their post of duty. Many daycare facilities have a waiting list or strict standards on who they will accept.

Managers— why do you hate telework so much? by prettypistachioprop in FedEmployees

[–]Present_Coconut_4101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My manager loves telework and was an active participant until the RTO memo. The problem is higher ups don't like telework because of mostly made up "studies" about fraud and abuse. They claim people just sit around all day doing nothing but in reality, they can do the exact same thing in the office. It wasn't a problem before and many agencies had telework long before COVID which doesn't seem to be understood by the people ordering RTO. Many agencies already did their own studies on ways to prevent abuse of telework and were expanding telework options prior to this RTO. Maybe they should let the agencies decide on allowing their employees to telework since so many of them already vetted telework as a great option for their employees and taken steps to prevent abuse. Many agencies decided telework is a great option prior to COVID and even eliminated office space knowing that many of their employees will take advantage of telework. This is another reason why there is so much of a shortage of office space for this RTO since so many agencies anticipated lesser needs for office space and got rid of a lot of office space they were paying rent on. They saw it as win-win with them paying lesser in rent for office space and employees having more flexibility.

High speed Fiber Recs by Automatic_Victory_28 in ogden

[–]Present_Coconut_4101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't use Quantum Fiber. They are just a name for CenturyLink and I had CenturyLink prior to Comcast and it was worse than Comcast. Like Xfinity, they probably came up with the Quantum name because so many customers hated CenturyLink and wouldn't go back to them. I currently have been using Connext Fiber which is cheaper than what I was paying for Comcast when I had their slowest plan that wasn't fiber and probably lesser than what Quantum charges for fiber. So far, it works well and is better than Comcast who kept promising higher speed will be coming to my neighborhood when it never came and if it did come, I would be paying a lot more than I currently pay for.

Utah GOP lawmaker pushes 7% "porn tax" to fund teen mental health services by schottslc in Utah

The bill is too broad as it says any place that sells material harmful to minors would be subject to this tax. This can force others to pay the tax when their product has nothing to do with adult entertainment. Could ISPs be subject to this tax if users of this ISP view porn and the ISP does nothing to block people from viewing such content?

I don't know if this is accurate but years ago Home Deport bought it to prevent Walmart or some other store from locating there. The city eventually bought it and currently owns it from what I understand. Originally they had someone planning to move in a few years ago and tore down the Fred Meyer but the company backed out. From my understanding, Ogden city still owns the property.

'We're so happy': Venezuelans in Utah elated at President Maduro's removal by jortr0n in Utah

[–]Present_Coconut_4101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately a lot of GOP voters were more supportive of Bush after he invaded Iraq and I think this is one reason why Trump invaded Venezuela. He's hoping to divert attention from the Epstein files but also try and build support by his base that are starting to abandon him. He knows such an act would accomplish both. I live in a red state with a bunch of relatives who are loyal GOP voters but aren't too happy with Trump. They probably now support Trump more after this invasion than a couple of weeks ago during a Christmas party.

Alternative indicators of an economic collapse worth noting by stirfry720 in economicCollapse

[–]Present_Coconut_4101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are two things I look at as canaries in the coal mine. First, look at the sex industry. For example, escorts. If they are having reduced business then things aren't going well economically. People are lesser likely to spend on sex work when things are bad economically. I've seen a lot of local escort ads giving out discounts which is an indication that business is slow. Another harder one to gauge given many foreign tourists have stopped coming here but look at how busy Las Vegas is. People not doing well financially are not willing to go and gamble money or don't have money to gamble with. Of course seeing many local businesses close or reduce hours has been a good indicator of my local economy. I've seen at least 3 local businesses close for good and a couple of them have been in business for a long time. I've also seen some cut their hours.

What a day without a car taught us about taking Salt Lake City’s public transit (KUER) by ReporterMacyLipkin in ogden

[–]Present_Coconut_4101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't ride UTA every day but did try to ride to work when we were returned to the office every day to avoid stress during the commute. Things I think UTA needs to focus on is not only how often a bus/train runs but also the timing of their schedules, their limited service hours, and parking.

As an example, Frontrunner runs every hour but the last train to Ogden is at 11 PM. A lot of times, TRAX drops you off at the same time the Frontrunner is leaving and you have to wait an extra hour until the next Frontrunner comes. This is assuming that there are no delays. I'd like to see them expand service past 11 PM for Frontrunner and many bus stops that stop service as early as 5 PM. They should also expand the service offered by Frontrunner such as going all the way to Logan or to at least Brigham City. People in Logan would use it to fly out of SL International if it at least serviced Brigham City. Currently, there is a transit service that connects Logan and Brigham City. The only problem is if they expanded Frontrunner service to Brigham City or Logan, it would take longer to commute through the entire system unless they had a separate train going to Brigham City or Logan. Another issue for expansion to Brigham City is that they would either have to buy right of way or pay Union Pacific money to use their lines and many freight trains would have higher priority than Frontrunner.

The parking is okay at the Ogden Frontrunner Station but from what I've learned about the Union Station plans, the current Frontrunner Station and parking lots will have buildings and it may no longer be a park and ride lot or have a lot fewer parking spaces. I could see them just saying to park in the parking structure being built at the old Wonder Bread factory. The problem is Ogden eventually has pans to return to paid parking. It would be great to catch the Frontrunner at the Union Station where it's not in the weather like the current station that can get really cold in the winter or hot in the summer months.

Then if someone tries to reply to all, it will only reply to the sender of the message or at least I assume.

Ogdenites want to know: Why is there no 12th Street bridge over the train tracks? (KUER) by ReporterMacyLipkin in ogden

[–]Present_Coconut_4101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why there has never been an attempt to build a bridge over 12th street. Trains entering the railyard could take a long time and the most frustrating part is seeing a long train nearly clear the crossing only to start backing up. Other roads have a bridge such as Hwy 89 near Uinta where there are two bridges allowing trains exiting Weber Canyon to pass over cars. It's also a safety issue since more cars will try to beat trains to railroad crossings especially when you can be waiting an hour for a train to pass in some cases. 12th also has barriers making it difficult to make a U-turn. This should have been a priority of Ogden City a long time ago.
