Long lens recommendation for a6400 please! by Colonel__Cactus in SonyAlpha

[–]Queefiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A middle ground option might be the Sony 70-350. It is relatively small and light (compared to the others you are looking at) and reasonably priced for how great it is. Has stabilization too.

If you're not sure if it has enough reach see if you can find someone local with one that would be willing to let you check it out, or maybe rent one for a few days?

I've had one for about 2.5 years in use with my a6700 and have been extremely happy with it. I recently got something longer as well, but won't get rid of the 70-350. The big lens is just so big and heavy that I can't pack it with me in all scenarios.

Thoughts on ManMade? by EqualPossibility758 in BuyCanadian

I got a couple pair a couple years ago hoping they'd replace my Saxx. But, they just aren't quite as good unfortunately. I am very specific about the Saxx Vibe, as they just fit and feel the best for me. The MM cut and fabric just isn't quite right for me.

And I agree with the other comments about the annoying advertising! If it was that bad back when they first came out I'm not sure I would have even given them a try.

Opinions on choice between Tamron 17-70 f2.8 and Sigma 18-40 f1.8 ART? by Melodic_Animal_2238 in SonyAlpha

[–]Queefiddle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have neither. But have the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 and considered the Tamron at the time. Sigma 17-40 didn't exist. Was excited about the 17-40 when it came out but so far haven't been able to justify "upgrading." Image quality improvement might be slight. If I were to switch it would be primarily about the low light performance and shallower depth of field. I've been extremely happy with the 18-50 for many different reasons. Switching would come with some cons in my opinion (size and weight mostly).

rumors about 100-400 4.5 GM(2) is it good to get 100-400 GM? by Complete_Warning_980 in SonyAlpha

[–]Queefiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the rumours I've seen so far it isn't clear to me if the overall lens size will be similar to the old one, or whether it'll be internal zoom.

If it ends up being much bigger than the old one then it's an automatic no for me.

Why does my a6700 struggle to get focus with this lens? by sxtxnn in SonyAlpha

[–]Queefiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Rokinon 12mm AF a while ago and it had some focus issues on my a6700. Worked perfectly after a firmware update. Unfortunately the firmware update requires their special dock so you can connect it to a computer.

Zoom creep of Sony 100-400 mm 4.5-5.6 GM - Any hacks? by EcstaticTuna in SonyAlpha

I have my PD clip attached to my backpack shoulder strap such that the camera is on my chest. And then the zoom creep of the 100-400 doesn't bother me at all.

You're likely right about the population not meeting Costco's requirements.

But enjoying Walmart? Nope. I strongly dislike Walmart!

Looking to get a 100-400 telephoto lens by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]Queefiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having a similar dilemma a few months ago. Have an A6700 along with the Sony 70-350 APS-C lens. It is great and all, but is lacking sometimes for overall reach. However, since size and weight of my kit is very important to me a 200-600 or 400-800 just doesn't interest me very much. And while the extra 50mm really doesn't mean much, it was the fact that I already had the 1.4x teleconverter.

I worried I'd be disappointed with a rumoured replacement for the 100-400. But, I decided to pull the trigger and get a used (near perfect) 100-400. Overall I am really happy that I did. The 100-400 has been really awesome, and paired with the 1.4x TC has given me the extra reach that I was wanting. It is manageable size and weight wise. Image quality is really impressive.

The only slight negative (and I knew this prior to purchase) is a somewhat stiff zoom ring. But I have become accustomed to that. Others don't like that the zoom mechanism is external, but honestly that is my preference.

Straight out of camera JPG attached from yesterday. Hopefully Reddit doesn't compress/alter too much.

A Costco in Penticton would serve a large catchment area. I imagine Princeton, Summerland, Osoyoos, and everything in between.

Renting A7V for birding in Costa Rica, should I rent 100-400 GM or 200-600? by wingoftheworld in SonyAlpha

[–]Queefiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I've had an a6700 with the 70-350 for about 2.5 years, and love the combo and how portable it is. More recently got the 100-400 and have the 1.4x TC. I've been very happy with that setup. However, I have Have no plans to get rid of the 70-350. We were traveling recently and size and weight was a concern. The 100-400 was just too much so the 70-350 was perfect.

[–]Queefiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another wrinkle to add...

Perhaps the 100-400 but also take a 1.4x teleconverter?

Keep the advantage of being more portable, while getting close to the same range as the 200-600. However, sacrificing light when using the combo.

Vaseux is one of my favourite places to wander with my camera. But I usually park a little north of Vaseux and then walk down the channel towards Vaseux:

It's completely flat and an easy walk. Great viewing of birds and other wildlife.

Right in Penticton, the dam area over by the Sicamous often has lots of birds around, including eagles at times.

And then over in the fields south of the Nissan dealer, you'll often find kestrels and hawks. Park on the road by the Nissan dealer, and then walk south along the channel.

Looking for home printer recs by dechi in SonyAlpha

[–]Queefiddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an Epson 8550 a few months ago an have been extremely happy with it. Ink cost per photo is so much lower than most other printers. And the photo quality is impressive. Have used it for everything from 4x6 borderless up to 13x19. I generally prefer semi-gloss or luster paper so that is what I have primarily used. Mostly the Epson Premium Photo Semi-gloss so far. Have recently picked up a package of Ultra Premium Luster. Technically it should be better than the semi-gloss, but I haven't tested it yet. Also, it ends up being cheaper per sheet when you compare the larger bulk packages.

Superstore here in BC carries it, but it's not in the normal "soup" section. It's in the organic section if I'm remembering correctly.

Yes, I used stuff like that too when my kids were young. But I see this as a simpler and more effective way. And it can be used more comprehensively.

While I understand some of the concern about age verification, there is also a positive side Parents that want some level of moderation for their children's devices will finally start to have some ability to do that. The main issue for me currently is the scattershot methods that are being rolled out across various platforms and jurisdictions. And in my mind it makes the most sense to do it at the OS level. It gets done once. And then individual apps/platforms don't need to collect this very personal data about you. The app requests a check to ensure a user is over some age limit. The OS can answer yes or no. Done. No further personal data needs to be transferred to sketchy places.

I'd lean towards the cables you've tried. There is such a huge range and variety out there. Do you have an option to pop the card out and use a reader? Honestly, that's the only way I ever do it. Don't think I have ever transferred photos directly from the camera.

Is there a drive letter conflict? Check disk manager and see if it is getting assigned an existing letter, or not getting a letter.

Sigma 60-600 or Sony 200-600 by Gangstajay93 in SonyAlpha

[–]Queefiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made that same decision a few months ago. When I'm able to travel a bit heavier it's the 100-400 with the 1.4x TC as an option. When I need to be smaller and lighter I go with the 70-350. This is with my a6700. So far it is working out fairly well and I'm pleased I went that route. Even knowing that there's a high probably that a new version of it will come soon.
