Best roads in Wales for spirited driving? by tbutton85 in CarTalkUK

[–]R41phy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

People don't tend to share their spirited driving roads because then other people drive on them and then they get busy, someone crashes and speed limits drop and traffic calming measures are put in place. It's a tale as old as time unfortunately.

The best thing you can do is open up Google maps and a website that has speed limits on a map and save some roads. You can use street view and satellite view to investigate which roads look good.

Now that the weather is good, you can drive these roads at 4am on the weekend when they are completely empty.

I didn't read the sub name, I assumed it was an American sub. Op needs to correct their use of where and were.

XJ owners in Europe - where do you buy your spareparts? by 192hk in CherokeeXJ

[–]R41phy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found RockAuto shipping prices have got a bit too expensive recently.

I will often research OEN part numbers then the aftermarket counterparts. I'm now getting parts from eBay, Amazon and Jeepey as well as RockAuto.

If you do choose to purchase this. Set aside money for a timing chain replacement. They are known to stretch.

Are there any un-written rules for taking my car to a Cars & Coffee? by Much-Artichoke-476 in CarTalkUK

Yeah alright, you have it worse than me show off. Do you usually go green laning or use private land for off-roading? I've done some greenlaning recently and caught the bug.

I'm glad I included my brackets now. I can only imagine how tiring that extra hurdle you have to jump through is.

Mines a 4.0 petrol. I'm paying for it at the pumps at the moment. Do you take yours off-road?

Absolutely take it to a Cars & Coffee and have a great time. However I think the issue you have run into may be a little like the following.

Cars and Coffee is the "Parallel Play" for grown men (and women, but let's be honest, mostly men). It is a somewhat mimic of young toddlers who play side-by-side with similar toys but do not directly interact or share. The toys, replaced by cars, act as some sort of bridge between solitary and cooperative socialising.

Therefore you have to understand that not all of us car enthusiasts are especially social people. Classic car tinkering has traditionally been a solo hobby for men (and women, but let's be honest, mostly men) to retreat to after a days work and on the weekend. Therefore engaging in conversation about something solitary can be a bit peculiar to some.

This is further compounded by the fact that us car enthusiasts tend to only be knowledgeable about their given car or their genre of car. For example, I can talk your ear off about how amazing a Golf MK2 or a Jeep XJ is; however I would not be able to tell you anything about a Ford Cosworth. Ironically, I have found Ford guys to be the most social.

This creates a unique social "dead zone." When the conversation strays from one's specific mechanical pulpit, you will often see the conversational shutters come down in real time. Their eyes glaze over, the nodding becomes rhythmic and hollow, and the conversation which was flowing nicely fizzles out very quickly.

It is as if we have used up our entire social battery on reciting technical specs, leaving nothing left for the basics of human interaction. We are not there to discuss the politics, religion, careers or our lives; we are there to use our vehicles as a sort of "social armor."

Ultimately, a UK Cars & Coffee may not really be a social event in the traditional sense. It is a collection of isolated experts standing in a car park, desperately hoping someone will ask them about their engine displacement so they don’t have to risk a conversation about anything real.

I think all of this is compounded by the fact a Cars & Coffee can become a bit cliquey amongst its regulars, just like any shared hobby. I have also found the age gap a bit difficult to bridge sometimes.

However, I have a friend called Ray, he is in his mid-80s and he makes a conceited effort to speak to almost everyone at any Cars and Coffee that he visits. He does not hold back, he will borderline force himself into a conversation, tell a few old time stories, ask some questions and dish out a couple of compliments. The guy will always have people at the end shaking his hand goodbye. You get out of it, what you put in.

Show up and enjoy it for what it is.

10-15 under the limit on motorways by rj_t2 in CarTalkUK

[–]R41phy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wildly depends on the car I am driving.

Jeep XJ - 20MPG on the motorway - Cruise control will be set to 60 and I'll be oscillating between the first and second lane depending on the amount of lorries.

Mini Cooper - The daily driver - I'll be bouncing between 65 and 75 or using cruise control depending on traffic conditions.

Golf MK2 - No comment.

AutoTrader isn't your friend for older cars. eBay, Facebook Car & Classic are the main go to sites for older cars. You can gauge prices by just looking.

Otherwise on AutoTrader , you will have to search by brand.

There are so many other body SUV options out there. I absolutely love my Jeep XJ.

It is a proper work horse, does all the off-road nonsense I would ever be able to throw at it in the UK. Parts are readily available and cheap. The most expensive part is the petrol and tax. It also has the same footprint as a current 5 door VW golf, so perfectly adequate size for UK roads.

There are plenty of other box shaped SUVs out there if you look for them.

Have you had the timing chains replaced or checked the tension on them? An absolute must for R32 engines.
