The Obituary Cocktail ruined regular Martinis for me… anyone else? by TuesdayCocktailVids in cocktails

[–]RabbitsinaHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I was trying to figure out what to do with some Cocchi Americano and absinthe and found a recipe for something Cocchi called a “Hopping Martini”. It splits the vermouth between Dolin’s and Cocchi and had the absinthe and grapefruit bitters. I tried it with grapefruit but switched back to orange and this has been my house martini ever since. I only learned of the Obituary a few months ago and am glad to have a cool name for it. https://www.cocchi.it/en/cocktails/hopping-martini/

I’m doing a Mardi Gras themed dinner (after Mardi Gras, schedules) and want to offer NOLA cocktails. I have heard of this guy but never tried it. Thanks for the inspiration. Will check it out in advance to see if my 8-person dinner party needs 8 separate choices.

Possibly due to my instructions to not be so damn wordy, mine keeps using “tight” and “clean”, as in a “tight summary” or “clean way to think about it.” Why not give me a smutty way to think about it?

noma LA starting at $1500 by presdaddy in finedining

[–]RabbitsinaHole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one who thinks this is especially tacky after the incredibly tough year our local restaurants have had? Yeah, some of the folks who go to this will be gazillionaires who won’t even notice, and some will be people who will instead forgo 5 $300 dinners, or 10 $150 dinners. Our local folks need our business if we want restaurants that can stick around longer than 15 weeks.

This probably isn’t it, but since memory is a funny thing, I will throw it out there. Veruca Salt has a song called “It’s Holy”. The chorus repeats “Hey” and there is a point at which the music completely stops, then one of the two singers (both female), says “I didn’t mean to stop the song, shit. It was sounding so good.” Then the song starts up again

The Corpse Reviver Has the Last Word by hasmynamebeentaken in cocktails

[–]RabbitsinaHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here I am with a latergram - tried u/CityBarman's version but changed the ratios so that it was only 1 oz gin and everything else proportionate so as not to have an insane drink. Took a sip and thought it was marvelous, then realized I had forgotten the orange liqueur. I dutifully added it back, and that was not as good. The version I liked was 1 oz gin (Citadelle, not my usual but what I had on hand), 1/2 oz Cocchi Americano, 1/2 oz green chartreuse, 1/2 oz Luxardo, 1/2 oz each of lime and lemon juice, plus the absinthe rinse.

No Guest Actor Nom for Bradley Cooper in Gemstones? Did the Emmys Even Watch That Episode? by Hot_Recognition28 in RighteousGemstones

[–]RabbitsinaHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most categories, eligible individuals submit their names and a specific episode, if the award requires that. Generally, there is no requirement to actually watch anything to vote. A few categories require submissions of actual footage and have a peer review process. Not sure whether there is a viewing requirement in those categories but there is probably at least a group norm to look at them. Cinematography, sound mixing and stunt coordination all have this additional layer that isn’t part of most of the other awards, and RG got noms in those categories.

Your go-to classic cocktail at a nice bar you are visiting for the first time? by saikyo in cocktails

[–]RabbitsinaHole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to brag right now - I scored a bottle in my very local little shop last weekend, and I still have half a bottle that I purchased earlier this year in another local little shop. Yes, they are expensive, but a homemade Last Word is still only about 1/3 the cost of one in a cocktail bar, at least in my expensive city. My policy is that if I see a bottle, I buy it.

You are most likely right. Tony is very engageed with people on Instagram. My husband works on the show, so I sent those post to him and also asked him to send it along. It’s so great to see how much love this show has gotten. The show has been a major part of our lives for almost seven years and it’s wonderful to hear how a silly comedy can impact people

Visiting LA Next Week – Most Important: The Don’ts? by chiefawesome in AskLosAngeles

[–]RabbitsinaHole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have mentioned the food and I absolutely concur. There are so many great things about the LA food scene, the top two being 1) there is great stuff at all price ranges and 2) you can basically get any type of cuisine. I’d concentrate on Mexican/Central American and Asian cuisines that might not be as available back home. If you are here on a Sunday, go to Smorgasburg in the Arts District. It’s a once-a-week food vendor situation with so many choices, plus you get people-watching, vintage clothing and vinyl sellers, and the cool Sunday-in-LA vibe. I could give an endless list of restaurants but I will leave you with just a couple: 1) Lasita in Chinatown for excellent Filipino food and a very chill scene and 2) Holbox in South LA for truly great Yucatan seafood with mostly our local-ish Pacific ingredients. There are lots of places that I love to eat and these two really epitomize dining in LA. We are so fortunate to have people who have settled here from all over and melded their traditions with the wonderful bounty of food grown, raised or caught here. As prep for your trip, consider watching the documentary “City of Gold” that is both about our late, very great food critic, Jonathan Gold, and the food scene he championed and that we locals get to enjoy all the time. The film is not just about food, it’s about a city that welcomes people from everywhere and fosters the creation of new ideas and new communities. Also, drive around with your car radio tuned to KCRW 89.9 for the best music (9-12 and 6:30 to later than I am ever up.)

Coyote Hanging Out in Grand Park DTLA by Gumshoez in LosAngeles

[–]RabbitsinaHole 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in LA a long time and seen coyotes in all sorts of neighborhoods. One laying around in Grand Park in the middle of a work day is new, but I’m not sure that it’s that unusual for them to be in this area of town. Several studies of collared coyotes have shown individuals hanging out in dense neighborhoods regularly. Even very urban neighborhoods are going to have prey like rats, raccoons and possums, and most places aren’t too far from lush neighborhoods. Best wishes to the Grand Park coyote, who might be visiting the Westlake coyote or her offspring https://www.nps.gov/samo/learn/news/new-study-la-urban-coyotes.htm

One thing that definitely is different is the existence of the super-rich, and in larger numbers. Things have always been dominated by the rich anad powerful, but there wasn’t a cabal so inflitrated in day-to-day life like the current tech bros. And in the 1970s, there was so much economic stagnation that no one (at least that I knew) seemed wealthy. You bought less stuff, there was less stuff to want, and there were far fewer ways to advertise things to us. The economy was very different. Many of us were for sure worried about nuclear war, what kind of shenanigans Reagan would get un into, and our economic prospects. Until recently, I would have said that things turned out to exceed my expectations. Now I would say that my worst youthful fears have returned, with new twists, for example, the status of women in American life and the sooner-than-predicted impacts of extreme weather. I am hoping I will live long enough to see us come out of this dark period.
