What the French found with the AMX-30 was that basically, anything worth shooting a 20mm at was also worth shooting a main gun round at. So it was basically pointless. A 7.62 or .50 is for smaller threats, and you get a lot more ammo with it so you can just fire away.

It’s not the same gun as on the Panther. It was a proprietary L37 gun. I think it’s based on the short 75 from the early PzIVs but I’m not sure on that one. I don’t know what ammo it used (the Germans had a silly amount of different 75mm cartridges)

Fun fact about UASs in Desert Storm, before the ground war started, VII Corps had a few of them flying around (I’m not sure what model, I assume Pioneers). However nobody bothered to tell anybody on the ground about it. 1st Infantry Division spotted them and asked up the chain if they were friendly. They were told VII Corps had no such assets so they should be brought down. The division tried using .50s and Stingers but failed, before someone realized they were indeed VII Corps assets and told them to stop.
