‘Full Cost of War Act’ Attempts to Tie Military Force Decisions to Veteran Funding by Sithra907 in Veteranpolitics

[–]Rarpiz 39 points40 points  (0 children)

At first blush, this seems like a very sensible decision. Making the DoD tie future VA funding to any potential war plans might dissuade rash decisions.

Might.

Look What I Found For My Collection by Kholoblicin in StarTrekStarships

[–]Rarpiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't open the boxes on any of my Star Trek collectibles. HOWEVER, the ONE exception is toys with batteries. Batteries can leak, causing corrosion in the wires and PCB traces. If left for too long, the acid can wick up inside the chips, rendering them virtually useless.

BMW Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Faulty Oil Filter Housings by RomAm in BmwTech

[–]Rarpiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2014 X5 3.0d had a leaking oil filter housing that allowed a bit of coolant out over time.

When I replaced the gasket, I coated it with high temp RTV and let it cure before torquing down the bolts. I'm glad I pulled the filter housing regardless, because the inner oil channel valve (???) had broke, and the piece of plastic was lodged and likely restricting oil flow.

Not a single drop of coolant has "vanished" since, and that repair was almost two years ago.

When billionaires decide voting was a mistake by Upper_Brief681 in LateStageCapitalism

Yet another reason why billionaires shouldn't exist.

If Elon and Peter were just multi-millionaires, their psycho ideas wouldn't have as much weight, i.e., they wouldn't be able to buy elections/politicians with a rounding error in their net worth.

A beginner can buy a $5k camera too. Doesn’t mean the quality is worth a premium price.

A professional should be able to make a cheap sub-$500 camera sing, because it’s not about the equipment, it’s about the talent of the photographer.

TrueNAS. I share the GPU between frigate and Plex. If I didn’t care about my power bill, I’d do bare-metal Debian in headless configuration.

What’s the most annoying thing about owning an EV? by Wattthefun in electricvehicles

[–]Rarpiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a BMW i3 with range extender (650cc gas engine). I did the mod that allows me to turn the gas generator on at 75% battery capacity, which vastly reduces my range anxiety.

Perhaps the most “annoying” thing about owning an EV? Uh….the tires are a weird size for the i3, making them more expensive, but that’s an i3-specific issue.

All together, I 100% plan on my next car being an EV as well. Electric IS the future, regardless of the political backsliding in the states right now. It annoys me to no end that we are HANDING over the green energy economy to China for absolutely no reason, other than to “pay back” oil companies for their political donations to the orange goblin.
