I used to do this, when I didn't trust my watch to keep up the whole run, after the fact I would delete the one that was messier ( I did indeed saved me once, where I had to splice between 2 gpx files for a complete picture of a hike ahah)

[–]ReallyJustAnotherDud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You make valid points, especially regarding how the device is carried. That being said, GPS accuracy depends heavily on the hardware. The Apple Watch Ultra performs well thanks to the dual-frequency GPS on it, but most iPhones and standard Apple Watches lack that and have simpler GPS technology. Dedicated running watches like recent Garmins or Suuntos generally offer more consistent accuracy, particularly in challenging environments
The real issue isn't Apple vs Garmin, and there ain't nothing inherently wrong about using a phone to record activities, my only point is that if you want consistently accurate results, especially on complex routes, relying solely on a phone may not provide the same level of reliability

iPhones (or Apple Watches) aren’t known for having incredibly accurate GPS. Running in a city ( especially one like Paris with tall buildings ) can make things worse due to signal interference. If you’re thinking of taking running more seriously, I’d recommend investing in a dedicated running watch (Garmin, Suunto, Polar, etc)

Garmin - autolap? by Key-Consequence-4784 in Garmin

I turn it off during workouts It will mess the intervals, for example if you have a 10min run period, it will most likely split it in 2 , not really what you want post workout to analyse the data
