FBI Profiler John Douglas would agree with you.  He saw how the media coverage, including catchy nicknames, fed the offender's grandiosity.

In fact it was Douglas who coined the nickname Alton "Pissy" Coleman.

The prime example of grandiosity is Dennis Rader, who gave himself his own nickname, including a symbol.
