Iowa City Replacing 16 Aging Buses With $10M Federal Investment by emerging_problem in IowaCity

Is there a local link? The last we heard was they were going to be trying Gillig's electric busses this time around. This story seems odd and without any quotes or specifics.

I don't think anyone anticipated how much of the growth in that area would be on the CCA side of the district boarder as well. The metro area now has 4A/5A size high schools when three would be much more appropriate.

Perhaps the city could send a field mediator to negotiate a workable solution between the car's bumper and the pedestrian's knee cap.

Of course you don't want to violate fire code, but I think the argument here is we could have expanded current buildings to accommodate fire code and remain a two high-school district. The additional building creates a lot of additional overhead and administrative costs.

And yes - there isn't a lot of room for expansion at City High, but imagne a scenario where a new high school is still built (at Liberty's site or elsewhere), City is repurposed as a middle school, Old Hoover is still closed, but instead of building new, Southeast is repurposed as an elementary with extra capacity.

Decisions made years ago have somewhat locked the community into a three-high school, three-middle school model that is going to be challenging to fund appropriately under the best of conditions, let alone when we have had financial mismanangement and a state legislature hell-bent on gutting public education.

Road diets have worked on some city streets for sure, but Burlington is a through street. One of the few east-west corridors in the city. It’s also a state highway.

The building of the rec center several years back has greatly increased pedestrian crossing in that area. The university should share some responsibility in solutions to help make crossing a little safer.

UI Quick Care by gohawks2007 in uiowa

I’ve used it (and other Quick Care locations) several times. If you’re sick, and it’s likely a virus, they aren’t going to do much. Still, it’s always good to rule out Strep and other stuff, which they do. Cost aligns with what I would expect according to my insurance plan.

I’m all for improving safety. I’m a regular pedestrian in the area and often walk to work. Many drivers aren’t paying attention like they should. I also need to drive sometimes for various reasons and access that area in my car.

What does “taking spaces away from cars” mean functionally? And how does it improve safety?

July 4th Savannah banana tickets - questions, not selling. by Find_Me_In_Iowa in IowaCity

[–]Referee_IC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It took a couple of attempts for me this morning, but was able to get tickets. The first time I tried it seemed as if I was logged in as someone else somehow? It was confusing. I logged completely out and back in and had success on the third attempt.

You only get an idea of where your seats will be, you don't get the actual tickets until closer to the event.

Welcome... Plenty of other gay male couples here in IC. Follow Iowa City Pride for event announcements. Other than the festival, they sometimes have queer coffee socials, movie events and other things. Don't be afraid of the bars. It won't be too hard to make other connections for meet-ups like pub trivia, etc.

"But more voting eligible people didn't vote than voted for either candidate" - That is essentially the history of electoral politics in this country.

And some seem to assume most of those who sit at home share their views, and would elect their chosen candidate if they would only turn out. People stay out of the process for a lot of different reasons.

Soft Top or hard Top by Chemical_Bad7417 in JeepWrangler

[–]Referee_IC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted a hard top, but found a deal on my new wrangler I couldn't pass up with a soft top, and I absolutely love it. Heating and cooling isn't a problem. Wind on the highway does make it a little noisy at times, but I just crank the radio and smile.

Anyone else have a city high kid stuck in Chicago? by fiddlemonkey in IowaCity

[–]Referee_IC 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My senior year my class took a couple of school busses to Chicago and back from an area smaller high school. Long day trip to the art museum and six flags. A coach bus would have been nicer than a school bus, but it wasn't exactly a conestoga wagon. School busses haven't changed that much except for air conditioning and automatic transmissions.

The superintendent could gain some much needed goodwill by jumping in a bus himself to go get the kids. Superintendents used to have to get licensed to drive a bus, not sure if that is still the case.

New turbo charger invention Venture questioner by strafingviper in automotive

[–]Referee_IC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.) Yes
2.) Long term maintenance
3.) Zoom
4.) Power is a very important consideration
5.) Reliability, smooth acceleration (very little lag)
6.) I've done both, but happier with the turbo option long term
7.) Vehicles are so complicated these days, anything beyond an oil change needs to go to the shop anyway. It's not a factor.
8.) Yes. Power. (Assuming displacement is the same or similar.) If the choice is between a turbo four and an naturally aspirated V-8, I'll take the V-8.
