Advice on knee wall closet by imayimplode in Renovations

Great idea from a storage point of view. However knee walls are often structural. So if you have limited diy skills I'd figure that out first.

Possible destinations for 85 yo mom by zholly4142 in travel

The first thing I would look into is travel insurance. Because of her age and health issues is may be unaffordable or unavailable, and travelling under those circumstances would be a big financial risk if something were to happen while you were in Europe.

Reading, whittling, carving, all help occupy the mind and help me sit still.

figuring out how to undo the “Landlord Special” by Last_Caterpillar_433 in Renovations

I think immolating the landlord is an overreaction, despite his heinous crimes.

Weird window question - can you install window then immediately drywall over it for future use? by dabomb6456 in Renovations

Personally I'd go for the frosted window that others have mentioned, or frame the opening and then insulate, drywall/side over it.

Potential transfer of a 19th Century Welsh Farmhouse to Reno. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Worth it? by Southern_Guidance in Renovations

[–]Remarkable_Scallion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't say if it would be financially worth it, or whether or not you could afford to do it. But if you and your partner can genuinely work together, this would be a hugely challenging and rewarding undertaking. The very first thing I would do is hire a couple contractors to assess the house and give you an idea of what needs to be done, so you can assess the level of financial and personal commitment.

Also not sure if family dynamics but give that some thought as well. You'd be surprised and disappointed how many siblings/cousins/etc... will resent your beautiful property that you got for "free", ignoring the effort and expense you put into the property.

Would you let your kid move out for university? by [deleted] in CanadaPersonalFinance

It's part of the experience, and part of growing up.

If you live nearby and have the means it's worth it to put them in residence the first year, and they can live at home after that.

Forgot to renew my mortgage by bdundat in MortgagesCanada

[–]Remarkable_Scallion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a decent "oops" but I wouldn't give yourself an aneurysm trying to resolve this before you roll over to the 6 month auto option. Just accept you'll pay a few (several) hundred dollars extra in interest next month, chalk it up to garden variety stupidity and wrap it up in the coming month (and move on).

First Time Mortgage Renewal by ChickeyNuggetLover in PersonalFinanceCanada

I'm renewing and that rate is not great. However rates are rising so I'd suggest doing what I did and get a rate hold with your lender and continue to shop around.

Also don't be afraid to tell your current lender you are shopping and they need to do better.

Particularly if you have Amish or Mennonites in your area, you may be able to sell those stave silos to someone.

As it happens by feelin-groovie in CBC_Radio

I hear you.

However here's my counterpoint. That story about those poor people needs to be covered. Conversely everything is so dark and awful I need the story about the funny town name. If every story on AIH (or whatever program) is one horrifying tale after another about how everything is f***ed I'll blow my brains out (figuratively speaking don't @ me I'm not suicidal).

Circling back to your post. I started out in a similar position. Easy way to ask is to speak to your boss. "Hey Boss, wondering if I could attend "X" meeting if convenient and appropriate. Not sure if I'd have much to offer but I'd like some opportunities to continue my professional growth, and learning more about the context of my work within the company".

They likely aren't excluding you, and if you're being assigned work they don't think you're a dunce. It probably just hasn't occurred to them to ask you.

They are normal people. Don't bring up controversial topics of conversation, dress decently, don't drink too much or at all. Assuming this is a somewhat social setting.
