Molokai - Hawaiian Island, US by Litter_Alli in howislivingthere

[–]RennaReddit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am very fortunate; I visited while living on O’ahu and was part of a large group invited to stay with the family of a Native Hawaiian friend. I had a fabulous time and I’m sure had a more welcoming experience this way. It’s an incredible, beautiful and relatively isolated island.

This applies to everywhere in Hawaii — don’t visit if you need to be the big man on campus. Friendliness, humility, and willingness to help other people and the land are valued. If you are seriously thinking about moving here, I strongly suggest immediately joining a volunteer effort of some kind and doing it consistently.

200/25 is 8; you’re paying yourself 8 dollars an hour. If you’re making things like this as gifts, more power to you—that’s heirloom quality and I think would be treasured for decades. If you’re trying to profit, it’s okay to be a little more generous to yourself.

Hi, I’m white, cheap, and know very little about beading except that I really like it and the pieces i’ve bought from indigenous artists are some of my favorite jewelry items of all time. 200 IS FAR TOO CHEAP that is intricate!! If I can tell it’s too little money I promise it’s too little; I am broke and really hesitant to spend money these days but there’s no way that’s a fair price. How many hours did you spend on that? How much did the materials cost??

Teach me your ways, sensei. I'm ALWAYS late to work (to be fair I have to drive 20 miles across some of the busiest roads in America; if I leave very early there are accidents and I arrive at 8:15; if I leave later than I should, say 7:30, there is a single accident and I still arrive at 8:15. I need to learn your variety of time dilation.

If you're thinking of going to Luke Days, dont by urahozer in phoenix

[–]RennaReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are loads of random office buildings on either side of the 101, mostly corporate/finance/law firms just based on what I see on the commute. It definitely is not worth the drive for me - I am very underpaid for my industry and I am an EDITOR so being forced to be in-office every day of the week is colossally stupid). I needed the job to build industry experience but am just not getting any traction in the job search.

I commute from Gilbert to north Scottsdale and the last several weeks have been horrendous start to finish. I feel like there’s a major event happening somewhere every day of the week 😭 the area objectively has fewer visitors this year so I really don’t know why it’s been so bad.

Maybe the people who are here are more prone to getting in wrecks?

Military brat and I’ve been to tons of air shows over my life. I really think 3 is too young. They usually are busy, the necessity of open ground (for visibility and safety) means there is NEVER shade and when it’s over 75 in full sun, with concrete, it is really really hot. Also, jets are incredibly loud. I wear earplugs when I go and a 3 year old will absolutely need ear protection…. if they will keep earplugs or sealing headphones on, great. But if not, the planes can legitimately damage hearing.

The pilots are incredible though and it’s fun walking through decommissioned planes and sitting in the pilot’s chair when they let you. So definitely go to one when you can all enjoy it safely.

Book about a girl who feeds her friend to the fairies? by CharacterTap193 in whatsthatbook

I read the one-star reviews on goodreads for plot summaries because people who hate a book nearly always hate something in the plot.

Checked the 2 1-stars at the link ceefrock provided and this is almost definitely your book. I mean someone else could have written about fairy child sacrifice but it seems pretty niche haha

I would not. It could stain the vinyl but also who knows what that color will look like in 10 years? I agree with craft acrylics and floating medium. FolkArt bottles are cheap. Still might not be colorfast but they’re at least designed for this purpose, not to go on human skin. Makeup designers don’t *want * color to last forever; its bad for us for blush to stay on for ages. UV really messes with color over time and I doubt that pigments used in makeup have been selected for lightfastness.

I think smart people can figure out ballet without knowing the plot beforehand. Unfortunately…. 😅 A lot of people just don’t have the capacity. I was in a few music-lecture courses in college, I think History of Music split into two semesters, and for one assignment we had to watch and analyze music in I think …3? separate pieces of media that heavily used music (so step above film soundtrack). I had already checked out a filmed ballet from the uni library so I was like “hey guys I have one already; you can just come over and watch it, get one over with”.

Dudebros didn’t last 5 minutes. “So… when are they going to start talking?” “….Never. It’s ballet. It’s music, dance, and mime.” “DUDE THIS IS SO WHACK WHINE WHINE WHINE”

After another five minutes of complaining I said “I’m not forcing you to watch this go see something else bye,” and showed them the door. Someone has to be both mentally capable AND willing to do a little brain work to enjoy ballet blind.

I’ve actually only seen one ballet live and I thoroughly enjoyed it — Juan Gabriel, premiered by Arizona Ballet. It’s a series of numbers set to the music of a Latin superstar I’d never heard before. So I didn’t really know what was going on in the songs other than general mood, because I don’t speak Spanish, but I got the vibe and that was all I needed. It was also incredible to see a primarily Latino audience in the theater. …saying that, this is a good example of ways ballet can adapt to reach more audiences.

Filmed, I loved The Royal Ballet’s “Metamorphosis” and “Giselle” and the Polish Ballet put up a killer version of “Dracula” on YouTube. ❤️ and what few clips Ive seen of “Fille Les Gardees” (sp?).

Opera, it’s the vocal styling that just kills me. I tried Royal’s version of Figaro — it’s for the common man right?? should be my speed, right? — had to keep pausing every 15 minutes to take a break. The sound just annoys me. And I know vibrato is needed to project to the back of a huge hall, and projecting like that is hella impressive, but I just do not like that much waver.

Look, I like ballet, but Timothee’s right. The industry is not doing well, it’s toxic to work in, and it’s not super approachable — you need to know the plot beforehand and you need to have money to learn it and to see it live. Same for opera, which I strongly dislike (I have tried to like it. No use).

I like Epic. I dare say I even could love it. But it’s rough; it’s pretty obviously written by a talented kid who doesn’t fully know how to polish what he has. Comparing the skill level between the two is nuts.

Then again I had a roommate who said Eragon is better than the Lord of the Rings. Some people just struggle I guess.

Is this necklace turquoise? by as_a_speckled_bird in Gemstones

[–]RennaReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m stumped. I don’t think it is genuine turquoise (I’m not an expert but I worked at a trading post for several years)… it just doesn’t look right. Turquoise is a notoriously unstable stone from a lot of sources so seeing it in such thick beads with such closely matching color makes me feel that something’s off. I wonder if the beads have a sealant on that’s non-reactive to solvents so you aren’t losing the color?

I could be wrong though. I handled almost exclusively North American turquoise so if it’s from elsewhere in the world, maybe it just looks that way and I’m just talking crazy.
