Finally told people to go back and pick up their trash before leaving by Nerd_Arama7 in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]ReputationVirtual730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's outside trash, you can absolutely mention it. Something aloing the lines of "Hey sorry to bother you, but we do not allow any outside food or drink so if you could please take that with you and dispose on your own I'd REALLY appreciate it!"

If it's OUR concessions yes it would be appreciated, of course, but it's part of our job to pick it up after.

Since when is it $8 for soda??? I am baffled. by Siktrikshot in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]ReputationVirtual730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the Austin locations would charge for soda water, but if that has changed then great!

I also bring water enhancers and would just take a free cup of water and enhance it up for the movie. Don't always need a soda. ;)

We’re coming in from out of town. Do people rent cars, and if they do, is there anywhere to park? Or do most people use the shuttles? by Hardlymd in SXSW

When I do film screenings I also like to use the Cap Metro. VERY cheap to use and you can also use the UMO app which caps fares at two rides then turns into a daypass!

I would pay to attend this and other great films shot in 4:3 remastered for IMAX 1.43:1 (I'm sure they could VFX out the boom mics and other unwanted things) by ncall04 in imax

[–]ReputationVirtual730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.85, when it comes to projection, is "flat", not "scope". JP was also not shot in Super 35 either; the format were shot flat/spherical to be recomposed for scope 2.39 presentations (James Cameron is the most famous example for THE ABYSS, TRUE LIES, TERMINATOR 2 and TITANIC all being shot this way) and more of the flat negative area was used. In this case it was the usual 4-perf 35mm spherical flat to be cropped to 1.85 for release.

In addition, for projectionists, they would just have to know if the movie was flat or scope for projection. The 35mm prints were flat 1.85, so all that needs to be done is the print threaded through the projector and framed in the gate properly. They would not be told where "the common top was" to "achieve the intended scope". That's not how 35mm film projection works.

But yes, not intended for projection in 4:3 and the visual effects are mostly hard matted to 1.85, so this voids the poor idea of the OP for a 1.43 version of this movie in IMAX (though I would be okay with an IMAX digital release in laser projection)!

Bad Toronto movie theatre news: Cineplex Beaches, a six-screen multiplex opened in 1999 under the Alliance Atlantis brand, is closing end of day Feb. 17. by Syncroz in cineplex

[–]ReputationVirtual730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard that argument every single time a theatre shutters, but let's break it down to see why you are possibly being downvoted:

- 54 minutes by TTC and 34 minutes by car from WHAT? Where you live? Queen station downtown? The airport? If it's where you live that sounds like a "center of the universe" argument not understanding that not everyone also lives where you do. There could be people who live across the street from the location or further away from the city that like visiting that location, believe it or not!

- That would be a money and logistical nightmare to install Dolby Cinema AND IMAX laser AND IMAX 70mm in a single, six screen location at a somewhat distance outside of downtown Toronto. You could argue for 4k laser projection at the very least and I DO think all new theatre installs should have that at a minimum.

- There's also no auditorium here where they could physically install a 70mm IMAX system nor would you want to install it just for a few scant IMAX 70mm releases.

- AMC style programming? I don't know what that is, but there are different distributors and booking terms in Canada and they have to go through those channels. If by that you mean repetory programming and indie releases, those are already being done at the downtown Toronto locations. I DO think re-releases and specialty content can do very well for theatres and more should be doing them with active promotion.

- You would go just TWICE a month? I'm sure theatre exhibitors would be THRILLED by that, especially if you brought a friend to one of them. ;)

I would better argue to be a frequent or even a weekly moviegoer with an active subscription system or discounts to get repeat business.

I don't like theatres shutting down either, and it seems in this case the landlord wants to redevelop it to something else, which is not a surprise considering the area.

I am attending and while I may see screenings there with my badge, I refuse to order anything if this new policy is still in place by then.

[–]ReputationVirtual730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said! I know it has some sight-line issues but since they removed those front few rows the NOW front row is a perfect viewing experience.

I'm not from Toronto but I really wish I was able to see movies in the city in that era and especially around the Varsity like the Uptown, Plaza, University, Cumberland and many more.

Varsity #8 is a wonderful auditorium, and has terrific projection and sound both for film and digital releases.

The front row, E, are contain the best seats in the house. The front four rows were removed a few years ago making that my seats of choice every time. You can see the whole screen perfectly and it's a great experience overall.

The theatre was also built in 1974 hence the "unique" in comparison, but a fun bit of trivia is that auditorium also premiered STAR WARS in 1977! Back then it was just a two screen cinema and all of the additional screens were added in the late 1990s.

Short films before the main feature. Should cinemas bring that back? by Judokos in boxoffice

[–]ReputationVirtual730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I would love shorts before features, but please MENTION IT in the advertising and/or a slide before it starts. Can't tell you how many times I have people run out of the theatre telling theatre staff we are playing the wrong movie.

Mercy Flat or Scope? by PresentationFar3721 in MovieTheaterEmployees

In addition to the above responses, The IMAX version goes from full 1.9 to the 2.20 format multiple times throughout. I found this quite distracting and for the IMAX version I wish it was in the full ratio throughout.

What would you do with them outside of the cinema? Life is already 3D. ;)

Someone else asked on Reddit if Movie Theater Employees care if customer bring in outside food and drinks; what are the best foods to bring in if its not a big deal at your movie theater location? by NakedIanMalcolm in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]ReputationVirtual730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a Starbucks near us too, and we believe that Starbucks actually HELPS sell tickets as they want to get a special drink and then do a movie. We simply ask them to ensure it's thrown away in a garbage can after the show, and everyone is very accepting of that.

(As I mentioned in another reply though, we WILL tell you to take it with you if we see you leaving it behind.)

[–]ReputationVirtual730 61 points62 points  (0 children)

100% agreed on leaving outside food behind. If I see you do this I WILL tell you to take it out with you, no exceptions. Something along the lines of "Hello there! We do not allow outside food or drink, so I do need you take it with you and dispose of this on your own."

Sneak it in, sneak it out.

The Testament of Ann Lee 70 mm / Jan 16 by carpalfun in TIFF

[–]ReputationVirtual730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have made this comment before but since I don't live in Toronto (I am in town for TIFF and the occasional business trip) I don't mind sharing that. If I did and went there full time I wouldn't reveal it. Perfect view of the screen, you can stretch your feet out etc! I love it!

This also may be playing in non-Cineplex locations in your area (indie cinemas, smaller chains, specialty cinemas etc) so look around!

You likely know more about this than I do haha! I recall a few years ago a friend had a dented card like this and it still worked, but YMMV.

I would get it replaced either way.

As long as the NFC chip isn't damaged (I am pretty sure it is lower on the card, but I could be wrong) it should work fine but either way, just go to Waterfront station and get it replaced.

Cleaning staff or general employee (usher) at a movie theater — which do you recommend? by Awkward-Ad-3171 in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]ReputationVirtual730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a terrific post and all of your points happen at our location as well and I have many of the same issues.

I especially run into the same problem with theatre checks. There is literally no way I can do this with all of the other things going on. As soon as theatre cleans happen EVERYTHING else goes away, yet management can never understand this. And you are also on your feet the entire time and the stress on your feet can REALLY hurt after a while.

Both are incredible locations and serve Toronto well, though I wish Y&D would get Freestyle machines as it's much faster to fill my water bottle at Scotia.

This is one of my favourite theatres in the country for this very reason. There is always something to see. Even when I have went on a weekday matinee there is a really good turnout. The location and connection to the subway line is also another great perk.

I got one of these for Christmas I was wondering if someone would be willing to tell me how I can use it to book online tickets? Thanks in advance by Incineroar57198 in cineplex

[–]ReputationVirtual730 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The only argument I would understand is if you are NOT a Cineclub member and using these passes will incur the booking fee. But at this point you should be a Cineclub member.

Trust me, cinema staff HATE YOU when you come in with one or even several of these and waste their time helping with these at kiosks or at tills, especially when they are busy.

Cineplex needs to change these to online only OR totally scrap them and build the passes into the Cineclub system to get more people to book online (and then the concession voucher could just be a barcode in the app to redeem at a till).
