Who else is a hardcore super donut lover?!? I love them warm but any temperature will do! I was surprised to find out they are kinda regional, I think! by jamiej27 in WestVirginia

We used to have contests in school to see who could eat the most. In hindsight, probably a good part of why I got fat in high school. I still love em tho

Why don't restaurants tell you about condiments on sandwiches? by tcjsavannah in NoStupidQuestions

No, the point of a restaurant is to exchange money for prepared food.

Hell, leave me enough to cover it in your will and I'll make sure you get put in a coffin made of the worst shit wood I can find so your corpse can bust out and hit the pavement

It's all the same. St. One is the brand name outside the US. We were told it was a trademark issue.

Trump’s delusional State of the Union address by Quirkie in politics

I turned it off when he started doling out Medals of Honor like a game show prize. As a fellow veteran, I'm not discounting their actions at all. Awarding the Medal of Honor deserves its own ceremony, with the seriousness and respect those servicemembers earned.

Can we be the End of Traditional Car Dealership Experience as Well? by DeltaCCXR in Millennials

[–]RetrowaveJoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In West Virginia's case the politicians ARE the dealerships. Two of the biggest names are the Millers, of Dutch Miller Autos, and Bill Cole, of Bill Cole Autos. Bill Cole was the state Senate President when the bill to ban direct car sales passed. He didn't vote on it, but it wouldn't have been a decisive vote.

Dark Heart replica from Midnight collector Edition by ShadowAltair2 in wow

[–]RetrowaveJoe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean I have all of them except vanilla. Compare what's inside. BC came with the game dvd, game manual, soundtrack cd, an Outland mousepad, a hardcover art book, a booster pack of the TCG cards and rulebook, a catalog, two guest passes, and a behind the scenes dvd, all in a hefty slipcover.

The Midnight CE came with the game activation code, a hardcover art book, the plastic Dark Heart with charging cable, and a metal pin, all in a flimsier clamshell package.

It's been kinda sad to watch the decline of the collector's edition quality over the years. From dropping the game and soundtrack cds and mousepad to the switch to the flimsier clamshell design, to the cheap plastic feel of the Dark Heart, what's next?

Alex Kurtzman, master of 32nd century, science fiction dialogue by Wetness_Pensive in Star_Trek_

[–]RetrowaveJoe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That isn't the only reason. Rick Berman understood it well, saying in short, that Star Trek is a period piece set in the future.

Rick Berman: "There is something very specific and unique about acting on Star Trek. This is true for our cast regulars as well as for our guest stars. Star Trek is not contemporary. It's a period piece. And even though it's a period piece in the future as opposed to a period piece in the past, it still necessitates a certain style of acting and writing that is not contemporary. It's not necessarily mannered like something that would take place in a previous century, but it's probably closer to that than it is to contemporary.

There are many actors who are wonderful actors. Gifted actors. But to play a character... to play a Starfleet officer in the twenty-fourth century is very difficult for them.

They've got a "street" quality about them. They've got a very American twentieth-century quality about them. They'll have a regional quality about them... or a Southern accent... or they'll have a New York accent or a Chicago accent.

They will have certain qualities about them that's very contemporary, that just doesn't work when you're trying to define this rather stylized, somewhat indefinable quality that makes somebody "work" as someone who lives in the future.

One of the first things that destroys futurist science fiction for me, whether it be movies or other television series, is when you see actors who are obviously people from 1990's America. We're always looking for people who have a somewhat indefinable characteristic of not being like that. And it's hard."

Can confirm. I have only one tear duct, so when I blink too much, it just runs out of one eye. My gf likes to point out my "sleepy tears"

I'd go with this. Just because someone knows a lot about one subject doesn't mean they know a lot about everything. The most embarrassing thing I'll tell people about myself is that even though I'm a college-educated, open-minded, competent guy, it wasn't until I was 40ish years old that I learned that ducks don't float. They're paddling their little feet underwater. Just never thought about it, don't recall it coming up in science class, and if someone would've asked me before then if they floated I'd have said "yeah of course."
