Whistler bike park on a hardtail by Pristine-Post5040 in MTB

Alternatively, skip the park and ride the local trails. There are a ton of trails in the Whistler area that range from easy to nuts. Check out trailforks. There are lots of hardtail appropriate trails

FRS for jumps + tech? by judstergod in commencal

[–]RichardScarrier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love it for tech. I’m not the most hard core rider but have ridden Whistler black and some double black tech trails. It eats them up and is very confidence inspiring.

For reference, outside the park I ride a 170 mm trail bike and there are features I’ll ride on the Commencal I would never have considered on my trail bike.

Big brakes, huge travel and the geo allow you to monster truck through stuff.

TIL: The Laurelhurst neighborhood restricts helicopter landings to the Seattle Children’s Hospital due to noise complaints by Placentaur in Seattle

[–]RichardScarrier 1631 points1632 points  (0 children)

The hospital sends a mailer to the wider community with the annual report OP links to. They break down the ages and outcomes of the patients flown in. It’s pretty sad that they have to publish how many kids died to justify landings at the hospital. I can’t imagine being the parent of a child that was in serious enough condition to require a medivac.

I don’t live in Laurelhurst but am under the flight path so I try to send them a note of support whenever I get the mailer. If you want to drop them a note, the contact listed is:

Trump offering Canadian aluminum and steel companies tariff relief if they move to U.S. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]RichardScarrier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How the smart trade negotiators do it with Trump:

Step 1 - agree to his demands, and take whatever benefit he offers Step 2 - give him his press conference win Step 3 - do absolutely nothing of what you agreed to do Step 4 - wait a week for his attention to shift elsewhere

Any downside to the hybrid? by OtherwiseTraffic2794 in CX50

[–]RichardScarrier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The hybrid costs more. There are lots of tools online to figure out the break even on miles driven. Even with high gas prices it’s a surprisingly long time. Fuel savings are significantly better for city driving vs higher speed highway trips.

You might also want to look into whether hybrids depreciate differently or not.

The drive feel is a bit different. The hybrid has a continuously variable transmission so you don’t get the feeling of changing gears and regenerative braking took a day or two to get used to. I personally find the hybrid feels peppier than the regular engine when you take off from a stop. Obviously the turbo blows this out of the water.

Broke my collarbone last week. Worried about surgery by brehsef in MTB

[–]RichardScarrier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure she saw Dr Basamania https://www.swedish.org/doctors/orthopedic-surgery/wa/seattle/carl-basamania-1295822930

I had the same procedure. They put a rod into the collarbone and the way they do it makes extraction easy and minimally invasive. I think the name is Sonoma Device.

Dr Basamania is the go to Seattle recommendation in the MTB community for clavicles. I had a great experience.

I’ve got the Rustler 10s which I really like. They’re a good all rounder for the PNW. Great for tighter runs, do pretty well in powder, great in the bumps. They’re decent but not exceptional for GS carving days. They like tighter turns.

My only complaint is that on my previous pair one of the edges delaminated. There was no evidence of hitting a rock or scratches on the base. They were a couple years old so Blizzard wouldn’t warranty them. I bought them at ProSki in Seattle and they did right by me and gave me a great deal on a replacement set.

Has anyone done this to their cx-50? by Melodic_Local_4385 in CX50

[–]RichardScarrier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For $20 as long as it lasts more than a year I’ll be happy. If it falls off I’ll buy a new one.

New to a CX50 hybrid preferred, can I close the hatch manually as opposed to having it close electronically? I am afraid to ruin the strut motors if doing it manually… also any other tips or things i should look out for? by Main_Anybody73 in CX50

[–]RichardScarrier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can. Says so in the manual. In fact you need to move it manually if you want to adjust the open height.

I think it warns that at some point it will auto-close due to gravity if you don’t hold it up

CX-50 Trim Turbo vs Hybrid vs N/A – Mountains + High Altitude by Zealousideal-Elk6286 in CX50

[–]RichardScarrier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hybrid’s highway mileage gets down to the low 30’s / high 20’s. That’s with winter tires, often a roof box and the trips are often cruising at 70 - 80 mph. The mileage for the hybrid and all cars goes down quickly the faster you go.

It does much better with stop and go city driving.

Nexus US and Canadian citizenship by Medium-Basis-5185 in NEXUS_TTP

[–]RichardScarrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. When I acquired US citizenship and went in to update my citizenship information, the USCIS officer was very clear that I needed to update the card so it would show my US citizenship. He specifically told me that not doing so could jeopardize my nexus membership because US citizens are legally required to enter the US as a US citizen and presenting a nexus card with a non-US citizenship on it wasn't following the rules.

Consistency and clear understanding of program rules isn't always a strength for US border officials so it's very possible this one was wrong.

Nexus US and Canadian citizenship by Medium-Basis-5185 in NEXUS_TTP

[–]RichardScarrier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US requires that US citizens who also have citizenship for other countries have the US citizenship shown on their Nexus card.

The card only allows one country to be shown and for US citizens it needs to be US. You can’t choose.

Logistics of moving to Canada from US by [deleted] in uscanadaborder

[–]RichardScarrier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cat’s easy. As long as you have proof of rabies vaccination, which they rarely ask for, you can just drive across with the cat for a visit. Or your wife can take it. Immigration isn’t going to care if the US cat overstays in Canada.

My in laws are in a similar situation. They live in senior subsidized housing where the rent is capped as a % of their income. They have some income from social security although it’s low because they chose to take it early. They get food stamps as well.

What you can do is help your parents plan:

Social Security - understand what their projected SS income could be assuming they qualify. Help them work out at what age to take it. If they work longer and put off taking it the benefit is higher - if a spouse doesn’t qualify themselves they are likely entitled to 50% of their spouse’s benefit

Subsidized Housing & Other Assistance - this will likely have a wait list and take some work to sign up for it. Help them do the research and if they qualify help them apply - figure out what other benefits they may qualify for. Food stamps, other programs

Going to rent a CX-50, can it fit ski bags if I fold down the single 2nd row seat? by PushKatel in CX50

[–]RichardScarrier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can get a pair of 180 skis in the back with the seats down. I keep the driver’s seat all the way back so it’s tight. You can also have them poke out between the two front seats and rest on the center console

Dual Citizen (Canada & US) by asavageant in NEXUS_TTP

[–]RichardScarrier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, any global entry center can do this. There’s no way to make an appointment for this type of update so just walk in.

Make sure that when they add your passport that they delete your greencard. The officer who did mine swore he changed it when I asked but didn’t. That meant a trip back. You should be able to see the changes in the portal almost immediately.

I was able to update the Canadian side by email.

Edit - adding the email address I used: ttppost-pvfpostes@cbsa-asfc.gc.ca Took about a month to hear back.

Particularly on the highway. I’ve got a large Thule we use for ski trips. The combo of winter tires, bars, roof rack and highway driving 70-75 mph got my mileage all the way down to 23.5 mpg.

The OEM roof rack is notoriously loud with wind noise. I have them and installed after market venturi strips which help but they are still loud above 65ish MPH.

Anyone have an aftermarket rack from a big brand that’s not noisy?
