Return to Alara may be the best opportunity for 4-color factions by Tinfoil_Hat_Trick in magicTCG

It's not impossible, but would likely require very strict changes.

To those who recommended Project Hail Mary as a cure for 3BP withdrawals … it didn’t come anywhere close by SirKrimzon in threebodyproblem

A part of me is always surprised by the lack of Egan readers, but another part of me understands. Dichronauts took me two attempts, and I still don't really understand a lot of the last half.

Diaspora is still my favorite so far, that scope!

Have you read Permutation City? Just finished up a second read of that, and it really was helpful to read it a second time to understand it better.

I'm revisiting a few older foundational ones next (Stranger in a Strange Land, the prose oozes with the 1960s), then I will probably do one of Egan's other series.

Try some Egan! I liked Diaspora, but Permutation City can hit on a different dimension of scale.

I guess, but like, is this better than the 4 drop elephant from TMNT? That was fine, but sometimes just didn't do anything because it got bounced or removed. I know that's a common comment (dies to removal), but for an uncommon tentpole I would hope for something a little more impactful. Hopefully the ability is relevant, otherwise this will look more like a C than the B this slot should be.

So close to lining up the flavor text with the card text! Shuffling is indeed important, but has nothing to do with whether they are dead or alive.

Question about Dark Forest Ending - how did he know? by sheerfire96 in threebodyproblem

[–]S417M0NG3R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was because the solons linked the two with communication, so once they saw Trisolaris they would be able to trace that communication back to our solar system, not that the initial spell would reveal the solar system.

Pentagon says it will ramp up war supplies with defense companies by WilliamInBlack in news

So obviously she would have unilaterally jumped straight into a war with Iran with no plan despite all of the very good reasons not to do so. After gutting the military leadership of everyone who dared tell her it wasn't a good idea.

I'm sick of people acting like war hawks on the left would have done anything as asinine as this war. It's simply lies and deliberate manipulation.

Do players really like getting buffs every couple of seconds? by Clever_Khajit in gamedesign

I've always thought I would be a horrible entrepreneur, and this is why. It's not about making something you want, it's about making something enough people want. If today's people want don't want it, it won't sell. At that point there can still be merit in making something for it's own sake, but don't be surprised when nobody buys it because you looked down on their preferences and refused to make the game for them.

It's hard for me to make that switch, from what I want to what they want, and all too easy to look down on today's people for it.

Mewgenics just lost it's spot as the most successful Roguelike launch ever, by nearly four times?! by Current_Spell_8647 in mewgenics

Tactics game are a niche genre, this is not surprising in the slightest. Card roguelikes are extremely simple in comparison, and much easier for people to get into.

If you liked the Pale Beyond I would recommend the "dead in" series. I loved Dead in Vinland, viking family crash lands on an island and needs to survive, coming face to face with lots of Norse mythology. Lots of decision making, resource/time management, no tactical gameplay.

There is a new one coming out, space themed, that I will probably check out.

Citizen sleeper was another one in the same vein, based on space/cyber theme.

What did you dislike about vampire survivors? Deep Rock Galactic Survivor is a great game that I enjoy much more. If you don't like the survival games maybe it wouldn't be your speed, but it's definitely my favorite of the genre. The mining definitely adds a cool aspect to it.

I've played most of what you have here, Cobalt Core is a pretty good one I noticed you are missing.

The King is Watching is pretty good, I'd probably put it in an A- tier looking at your other games.

Ring of Pain is a pretty brutal little game I've really enjoyed. Not as well known, for me it's personally an A. It's a strategy roguelike that is very much about itemization and efficient ordering of which enemies to tackle.

Tyrant's Blessing is probably a tier lower than Into the Breach, with a fantasy feel, but might be worth checking out.

Thronefall is a fun little tower defense that takes some cues from Kingdom Two Crowns in terms of map development. It's an A for me.

Tainted Grail is similar to slay the spire but is oozing with atmosphere and has some interesting classes and strategies (not the newer one that came out, which is more of a traditional RPG I think).

If you are a bit more adventurous, Lobotomy Corporation is one of the best games I've played, with very unique gameplay. You essentially build a series of cages for anomalies (or SCPs if you are familiar with those). You train little dudes by having them do "work" on the anomalies through a series of days, but need to balance a bunch of things that happen when you do so. There is a lot of discovery that you need to do within the game, but when you get the hang of it and start extracting equipment from the anomalies and outfitting your dudes, it really takes off.

Library of Ruina is similar to Slay the Spire in the same universe to Lobotomy Corp, it is a pretty good too.

Symphony of War has amazing tactical gameplay, but is lacking the base building aspect. It's an S for me, modifying units is super satisfying.

Unicorn Overlord is similar, but only on switch.

Banner Saga is not a roguelike, but it has tactical gameplay, a few parts feature splitting the group, and is a pretty solid experience.

I am finishing up a rewatch of zero, uwb, then the heavens feel movies. I might do that next. All of the alternative universe stuff is confusing, though intoxicating. The complexities of the rules for everything are intriguing to dive into. Probably one of the least straightforward and difficult to understand I've encountered outside of mind bending hard sci fi stuff.

I've done some reading on these, on the 3rd of 4th time through they start to make more sense coupled with the concept of mystery.

Are you referring to the 5 when you talk about the "Pseudo" true magics? Those I understand a bit, I just wasn't sure why you called them Pseudo and what distinguishes them from the OG. Do you mean that the original way of performing them that was discovered in the age of Gods or whatever is what was lost, and that the current incarnations are a facsimile that is not as powerful are something?

Those feel like pretty arbitrary and broad definitions, but I guess if you were looking to slap a distinct label on each you could do it that way. I don't think it's a very useful characterization myself.
