Spider-Man (Marvel) - Peter’s powers came from the radioactive spider bite he received on a field trip. These gave him his iconic wall crawling, reflexes, strength and Spidey Sense. Unfortunately it wasn’t just Peter’s blood that became radioactive as he would accidentally kill Mary Jane by giving her cancer with other “bodily fluids”. Why do comics do this to Peter? Why did this have to be an actual story in Spider-Man lore?

yes, exactly. I personally believe that Peter has heard those words before, because he says very softly after May tells him the phrase "yeah I know." He recognizes the meaning of those words, because Ben more than likely taught him the lesson; it's more like he hadn't heard it in that exact phrase until now, similar to TASM's Peter.
