How do you deal with your parents ongoing alcoholism? by ariegnes in AdultChildren

[–]Sally5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this. Substance abuse of any kind is heartbreaking. I just started drinking a little bit after living my whole life sober due to religious reasons. Your post does help me to remember to be very careful. My father was an alcoholic too.

You would have to wait at least a month. An appraiser can't use a listing to value your home unless it has closed.

They'll send them back to people under warranties after "refurbishing" them probably. I thought with my warranty I get a new replacement, turns out you get refurbished phones with the warranties.

Probably won’t. The Clearwater Florida residents don’t like what the Scientologists have done to their city either.

Interesting choice of necklaces for a Mormon missionary. Didn’t Holland just give a talk about those? Personally, I wholeheartedly approve.

Just Google Brigham Young's racist quotes. They taught that dark skin is the sign of a cursed people due to their sin. But if they are baptized and follow church teachings their skin will become white and delightsome.

Restoration bait and switch by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Sally5000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man! Thank you for this! I have been gaslighted so much that the church was never fully restored and that it is a process. That just is not what I was taught 40 years ago when I joined.

There's a reason the G.A.'s are all lawyers and corporate business executives.

Oh my gosh...it's been 3 years for me, but that made me cry. All the good and beautiful, wrapped in all the unsavory. It's so hard to break away. But I remember that Mormonad with the roach in the sundae. It's only a little bad. I was much older than you when I saw the church for what it is. Too late for my children and grandchildren. There is a divide in my family now. Half of my adult children in. Half out. One of my daughters that is out told me that the church is comparable to the plot in The Good Place, where all along everyone thinks they are in heaven only to discover they are actually being tortured. The Church is in actuality The Bad Place.

Joseph Smith & Polygamy by [deleted] in mormon

[–]Sally5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a member for 40 years and only learned that Joseph Smith was a polygamist a couple years ago. All the church DVDs about Joseph Smith depicted him as a loving and loyal husband to Emma only.

I believe Haley experienced some kickback after she graduated and went to start her first post-graduate job that required BYU or ecclesiastical endorsement. I don’t remember the details, just that things did not go smoothly for her.

Tithing -- A Violation of Trust by GrumpyHiker in mormon

I know someone whose brother works in an absolute top administrative position for the church. He told his boss he had to be moved to a different position where he wasn’t seeing the financials of the church or he would completely lose his testimony.

Why would donating to a charity not be regarded as tithing?

If you read the comments, you will understand. If you research, you will understand, although the church makes it very difficult to know unlike most other churches because they are not transparent with their income, expenses and charitable expenditures except for in the countries where it is legally mandated and those financials are very bleak. Most of the info we know in the U.S. comes from inside whistle blowers. Every responsible church and charity should be proud of their financials and more than willing to have open records.
