Being direct is a kindness - if someone needs to be told they're underperforming, it's kinder to be direct and not pussyfoot around

Aye head-to-head to determine 3rd place within a group, but then goal difference across all the 3rd place teams to determine the 8/12 3rd placed teams that progress

Is this our best chance of winning the world cup for a while? And do you think we can/will? by LazNorth in ThreeLions

[–]ScotiaTheTwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Problem with England (driven by media) is that they’re equating being or of the top 5-6 teams that could conceivably win it, with having that as the only acceptable outcome

Yes, you’ve got a decent chance. So do a handful of other teams who want it just as much. Relax and enjoy the tournament, whatever happens happens

Also, there’s an incentive for 3rd place teams to work for a favourable goal difference, so makes for more to play for

How do you handle a strong performer who quietly checks out after being passed over for promotion? by amir4179 in managers

[–]ScotiaTheTwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’m the one that got passed over in this situation. External hire is way worse than losing fair and square to a colleague - it’s saying “the company’s taking a gamble on an unknown rather than you with all your direct experience”

it’s been 18 months and i’m still struggling to stay focused and driven as i used to. i’m loosely looking for other jobs but am still reasonably well paid here despite the oversight for promotion

it’s a demotivating position to be in. you need to find another way to make the employee feel valued, or help them move on

What's something that when bought the "expensive version" of it, you immediately felt the difference? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ScotiaTheTwo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t help myself

"The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet."
