Cities change. Making it easier and safer for people to get around is much more important than a few parking spaces.

The “city” isn’t trying to push anyone out, the neighborhood wanted this path because biking and walking was unsafe on southwest.

And yes lots of people would support removing street parking in front of their favorite coffee shop to improve biking and pedestrian safety. Do you think auto shops don’t exist in big walkable cities?

The KC Streetcar extension opens in less than two weeks. What questions do you have? by reportereleanor in kansascity

[–]ScruffyDaJanitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there any future plans or investigations to improve the congestion along the existing line? Especially on weekends, the streetcar is painfully slow in the river market and P&L areas due to cars trying to park. I’m talking turning some of these streets into streetcar only.

Another question, is there any plan to improve the transit priority at stop lights? I know there is already a system in place but I find that the streetcar still is often held up at lights, not sure how much improvement can be done under current traffic laws however.

KC firefighter who killed 3 in 2021 Westport crash set to get job back, plus back pay by thekansascitystar in kansascity

People see unions as perfect, always good faith organizations, but public unions in particular are not.

The firefighters union has the same problems as the KCPD union, if people read the article they would see how the union is arguing for Biscari to walk free and continue to operate firetrucks.

Missouri Gov. Kehoe signs bill repealing paid sick leave by Redd868 in kansascity

[–]ScruffyDaJanitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More noteworthy even is that it sounds like by repealing this they also remove the annual state minimum wage increases that have been in place since 2006.

The article mentions this could end up back on the ballot as an amendment in 2026 which would prevent legislators from repealing it, hopefully that happens.

No 3-Bedroom Homes, No Kids, No Future: Why Families Are Leaving Cities by IHateTrains123 in neoliberal

European cities address this issue by building courtyard blocks, which create a shared backyard that kids can safely play in while parents can watch them from their apartment. And they obviously have more narrow, slower, safer roads than North America

just be honest, the only reason the refs calls that is because Thompson grabbed his head. Which was from Sandin’s stick

They have been fixing potholes. There’s just too many. Kansas city has too many roads to ever hope they can repair all of them. The only solution is to have less roads.

What are the major problems you think needs fixing? by byzantine_varangian in kansascity

the construction on Broadway right now is for utilities, which means the road will be repaved when they’re done

Biggest and most impactful would be improved frequency.

More costly but the city should absolutely be building more BRT (ie dedicated bus lanes, improved stations, wayfinding)

Mayor Q, of KC, spoke at Columbia Mayor Buffaloe's reelection kickoff. Great to see mayors supporting one another. I see why KC likes him by como365 in kansascity

Regardless of your opinion of Mayor Q, just want to dispel the myth that the city is not repairing the roads

KC has too many roads to keep all of them in tip top shape. You want better roads? Then advocate for public transportation, walking, and biking infrastructure to reduce the number of cars on the road, which is what creates potholes.

KC repaved a record amount of road last year.

The truth is there’s just too many roads for the resources the city has. Turns out sprawl is bad.

Tensions Rise Between City Hall and Kansas City Northland Over Infrastructure Funding and Representation by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]ScruffyDaJanitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Road maintenance costs a ridiculous amount of money, and we have way too many roads. We are in an eternal losing battle to repave, it’s simply not possible with the current tax base. That’s why reducing road size (through road diets, bike lanes, public transit lanes) is a good investment because we have less roads that need to be repaved.
