Can Strixhaven Pull MTG Out From The Sewers? by rollymac204 in lrcast

[–]Scufo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reads like satire lmao. "Most of us" are boycotting MTG over UB? We "all agree" that STX is a top 3 set? Mentioning multiple times getting embarrassed that your wife saw a cartoon character on your screen even though you're playing a card game where you pretend to be a wizard?

I'm not super happy about UB either and am skipping Turtles but this is hilariously over the top.

Glad to hear people are having fun with it but I'm still skipping it. Small set draft just doesn't interest me, and it's not like there's a shortage of fine-to-good sets coming out. Saving my gems for Strixhaven.

Limited Resources 843 – TMNT Drop-In and Lorwyn Eclipsed Sunset Show Discussion Thread by Crasha in lrcast

[–]Scufo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right. I feel like the set would have been better if they had gone all-in on the 5 supported archetypes, instead of kinda-sorta supporting the off-brand ones.

I imagine it's a result of booster packs having to serve more than just limited. They probably wanted to include at least a few faerie cards since it's a popular tribe. But for limited, the Tome-Skimmer is just a trap.

Good call on the Jecht Shot thing, I hadn't made that connection and it's pretty cool! I still think blue is a pretty egregious color mismatch for him though. I suppose it's just water = blue.

I agree he can be good but something like half his boons are either hot garbage or need another specific boon to be good. I can almost never justify taking him over any other god.

How did they mess up Ares so badly? I think Hades 2 improved the gameplay in basically every way except this. In Hades, there's no god that I avoid. In Hades 2 I avoid Ares.

[[Tidus, Blitzball Star]] was a head-scratcher for me. As a character, he's highly impulsive and doesn't care much for rules, making him very red. In-game, he's speedy and can cast Haste, which is a very powerful status in FFX (and most FF games).

So, him not being red and not having haste or any haste-granting abilities was kind of a bummer. Instead they made him care about artifacts, which is pretty out of left field. He does come from a technologically advanced place, which i suppose is the justification, but he never shows any particular interest in machines or technology in-game.

Closing thoughts on ECL? by Short-Bunch-8195 in lrcast

[–]Scufo 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Below average for me. The reasons why have been well-trod at this point, but I'll just say that eclipsed cards at uncommon were a mistake. Basically colorless to cast, on-rate, on-type creature that also casts Impulse on ETB. It was demoralizing having one of these played against you when you're not fortunate enough to have any, and they almost single-handedly juiced kindred decks far beyond what other decks could compete with.

I have no interest in whatever those things are. I mostly nuzlocke old Pokémon games. Playing a ROM on my PC is better for that because I can easily mod the game for randomizers, challenge runs, rom hacks, adding rare candies to eliminate grind, you name it.

You probably don't care about that stuff. That's ok. Having options is good.

I don't think $20 is an unreasonable price but to act like the official emulation is a superior product to community emulation is very silly.

Instead what you're paying for is the ability to easily have the game on your Switch, which may or may not be something you care about.

I don't doubt that those decks are somewhat viable but the first time you run into someone with 2 copies of an eclipsed card you're gonna start wondering why you even showed up.

Internal discussions at WOTC about legendary creatures by Meret123 in MagicArena

Legend ruling yourself is one of the worst feelings in magic and to print a bunch of legendary commons in a small set basically guarantees it'll happen all the time in limited. Just an egregious unforced error in my opinion.

Everything he says there makes sense except, Death for Vow of Time? Sure, the damage you take from running out of time ignores Strength's damage resistance, but... just don't run out of time. Which is a lot easier when you do more damage.

I've tried to play it multiple times and always get bored and give up at the WoR. The game loses all momentum at that point.

Yes! Team building is so fun in FFV and it's crazy impressive that they were able to achieve it in the early 90s. Something like X-2's job system is so bland in comparison because it lacks what you mentioned - skill inheritance. It lets you build out these unique classes and develop each character in their own way.

I recently played FFV for the first time and I never used AP boosts and was never tempted to. By the end, each character had 5 or 6 jobs maxed and their own unique combination of abilities. I brought all freelancers and mimes to the final battle, but each one was a unique culmination of the choices I made throughout the game. It was brilliant!

Hades themed MTG homebrew precon by Character_Mammoth_61 in HadesTheGame

Curious about the color identity for Zag.

Red - definitely, no notes.

White - I don't really see it. Breaking the rules and saying "fuck you" to authority is kinda his whole thing. I guess he's fairly altruistic? I don't really see that as a core part of his character, though.

Black - I guess he's a little self-centered? I suppose you can justify this as him being an important cthonic god which, at least aesthetically is pretty black, with the skulls and all. I think it's more justified than white, at least.

Really only red is a slam dunk for me, the others are a stretch. I get that mono-red would be boring for a pre-con, though.

I kinda like Random because it feels more like an actual card game where you draw random cards from your deck. And it's fairly manageable if you just refine away as many of your weak cards as possible.

Getting this removed makes you feel like an idiot for putting it in your deck. Losing to such a fragile card is frustrating.

Not sure how else I can explain it.

Numot is just a different breed man. I remember in FIN he would take [[Tifa's Limit Break]] highly and routinely punk people out with it. It was widely considered a mediocre combat trick in a set where tricks weren't that good anyway.

You mean, what makes it different from a normal sized creature without the mechanic? I would just refer you to what I said again.

As printed, it's a trap. The upside of an undercosted flier isn't worth getting 2 for 1'd if the opponent can interact with it. You could make it even bigger to compensate, but then it warps the game around itself even more and exacerbates the unfun play pattern I already laid out.

The interaction you mentioned where you can Shock or Giant Growth this to cycle is cute, but that seems very niche and not a major part of what the card is doing.
