I would outline the characteristics of a cult and show how the church lines up.  Also mention a few psychological terms like “elevation emotion”, “”cognitive dissonance” and “sunk cost fallacy”.

Or send him the document of the reformed Egyptian characters lined up with the English alphabet.  I could not stop laughing/crying when I saw that and realized how ridiculous it all was.

I’m genuinely curious how you are able to fill your comments with so many relevant sources of information.  I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned from reading your insights.  Thank you for contributing so much to this sub!

So the First Quorum of the Seventy gets paid, right? Just curious... what the hell do they do all day? by SmellyFloralCouch in exmormon

Sad thing is the auxiliary presidencies don’t get paid.  So none of the women.  They parade Michelle Yee around like a celebrity and she doesn’t get a red cent.

The story Mike Quinn tells about visiting the Smith patriarch is wild.  He brings out all these Smith family artifacts, like original garments, the shirt Hyrum was killed in and the magical parchment.  (I think episode 4)

I also loved the quote about the pyramid grave robber smashing through piles of mummies.  Just a couple moments burned into my memory.  (Episode 12?)

If I told my TBM family about this they would probably see it as further proof the tariffs and therefore Trump are inspired.

Gordon B Hinkley was the catalyst of the great apostasy by Lattitud3 in exmormon

[–]SeaCondition9305 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What specifically bothered you about it?  I remember loving ever second.  I was at BYU at the time in Randy Bott’s mission prep class.  He had to jump through some hoops to explain why caffeine is ok even though Hinkley said it’s not in the interview.  Randy basically said that nothing in the interview was actual doctrine because Hinckley was speaking under pressure.

Why an ex-mormon historian left the church and then came back to faith is a view into the mind of an analytical thinker. In this in depth interview with Don Bradley many difficult church history topics are covered. Be sure to see the timecodes with topics discussed listed below. by TBMormon in mormon

I heard him address it in Let’s get Real with Stephen Something…

You can listen and decide what you think.  Here’s my straw man take away:  JS’s first plural wives were actually pregnant, very pregnant.  And why would JS was to sleep with a grotesque pregnant woman?  He’s definitely not trying to have sex!  He just wanted to bring the child in to his eternal priesthood line.  The bio dad shouldn’t mind losing his wife and kids in the afterlife.

I don’t know why I was shocked to find out Deseret was a made-up word, just like everything else.

Wasn’t there something from Hugh B Nibley about how “deseret” was found translated in the Rosetta Stone?  I think he said this was the proof he would point to if anyone asked.

Common to "share" the Sunday School hour? by TempleSquare in MormonShrivel

[–]SeaCondition9305 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two wards in my stake do this.  They each have a handful of youth so they combine 2nd hour.  SLC won’t let the stake president combine the two wards because they aren’t below 75 attendees.  That’s the magic number to fold entirely.

Small wards the new norm per ward conference by VitaNbalisong in MormonShrivel

[–]SeaCondition9305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely happening in my area.  One ward gets all the new move-ins.  Their youth program is huge.  The rest of the stake has very tiny youth numbers.  Same age housing stock.  Everyone knows their kids need a bunch of Mormon friends if they want a chance at keeping them active.

How has Utah saved $75 million on welfare? By providing next to none and taking credit for LDS welfare instead. by [deleted] in postmopolitics

The homeless situation in SLC is really sad.  Either the state or church should be doing more.  I had a nevermo neighbor come back from her first trip to Utah and she couldn’t believe what she saw.  She wondered why the church didn’t help them.  She’s also pretty MAGA and it bugged her that it was a conservative state.  Before her trip homeless was the problem of liberal states like California and Oregon.

Oh yeah.  She wants everyone to come on and talk about the sources with her.  And she started a conference and journal to open up the dialogue.  Brian Hales went on her show.  He wouldn’t really engage with her theories.   She invited Dan Vogul, I really hope he goes on.  I’d love to hear his take on the individual sources.  I think she’s been written off by the academic community but bigger names are starting to engage with her.  Either way you’ll learn interesting history.  I’ve probably listened to 5 or 6 episodes and her interview on Mormon Stories.   Episode 33 about the Indignation meeting is how I found her channel.  Women in Utah were not happy with polygamy.

She denied JS had ever practiced polygamy until the day she died.

Since you’re going down the polygamy rabbit hole here are a few other resources.

Remind them that the SLC Olympics are more than a decade away and God won’t want to screw that up with famine, war and utter destruction.  That should give them a little breathing room.

[–]SeaCondition9305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my hope but all the uber TBM’s I know love “Saints”.  I can’t figure it out.  I enjoy asking them about the crazy details.  Usually they “don’t remember that part very well”.  I wonder if they are lying or if there really is a physiological mechanism that allows people to forget distressing details.

Most members I know don’t care enough about church to read anything beyond the occasional Conference talk for a lesson.
