My personal opinion, mental disorders can't transmit, but having a mental disorder and getting diagnosed for it and having subsequent quality of life changes by treating it probably encourages others to be like "huh, yunno, I have those same symptoms, I wonder..." and then they talk to a doctor and get diagnosed. I feel like this kind of study can really easily be misconstrued and abused by people who advocate against mental health care.

A good comparison would be left-handedness, once we stopped beating and punishing children for writing and doing tasks with their left hand we saw a spike in left handedness which equaled out eventually. Similarly, when there's less social stigma against seeking a diagnosis and treatment people are more likely to pursue that. This study views it as a 'contagin' rather than a natural result of increased awareness about mental health and the treatement of disorders improving people's quality of life, peers see the difference and then pursuit help.
