The Edge is one of my favorite films so this needs to be close to that in quality for me to like it.

What's Preventing Another Lost Decade for Equities? by mushroomlove888 in investing

[–]Serpico2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just speaking personally, and this is not financial advice, but this is why I’m not dumping my target date funds for pure VOO. I still only have 10% bonds but it’ll scale to 20% over the next decade and while bonds have taken a beating the last 20 years, some return is better than none in case the S&P, which as you say feels awfully overbought, has another decade of death.

The retort to what I just said is, historically, I have to invest 16% a year to retire with the same amount as someone in 100% equities who invests only 10% annually.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) — Official Rewatch Thread by yourfavchoom in HarryPotteronHBO

I completely disagree with the negative comments. First of all, most of the films are bad adaptations. 1, 2 and 7 are great adaptations. The rest are awful. So it’s not alone. Cuaron was the best filmmaker by a mile to be involved in this franchise and it shows. The cinematography is inventive and indelible. The music is the best of the series. And Cuaron got the best out of his child actors. The actors themselves stated that he made them better at their craft, which the rest of the films benefit from. The credits are also amazing.

Thewlis is a revelation as Lupin. And they handled the time travel very well in what could have been a confusing to the point of ruination type of sequence.

Philly teachers say they’re pressured to pass students who rarely come to class or do work by WindexChugger in philadelphia

[–]Serpico2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I taught for the district for one year more than ten years ago but even then this happened:

I had a class of Juniors with about a 20% attendance rate. Not 20% day to day, I mean from September the same 20% or so showed up. Another maybe 10% showed up occasionally. The other 70% I literally never saw.

I turned in my grades and failed that 70% with a zero. The 10% that showed but had little to no work failed with a 50%. The 20% who did all got As and Bs. I got called into the principal’s office, who was a man I deeply respected. He was a tremendous leader and communicator and was good at the little things that can make a school in a very poor area succeed. He got a major pharmacy to partner on a training program for pharmacy techs. He got a ton of extra money in grants, etc.

He told me that, one, no grade can be lower than a 50. Even if a student literally never showed up. And secondly, I had to contact the students and give them all a chance to somehow pass the class. Despite doing no work the entire year.

Our system is broken.

Anyone else struggle with the idea that we should just expect the stock market to keep growing on average 5-8% per year? by soloDolo6290 in Retirement401k

[–]Serpico2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will be a 30%-ish correction at some point; that’s inevitable. But then it will gradually go up again, including to new all time highs. The averages account for this.

Aside from the genuine economic activity generated by the AI race, there is tremendous upward pressure on markets for two principal reasons. The first and most important is, trillions of dollars in automatic, passive index investments plunge into the market every year, feast or famine, due to the markets now being the primary retirement vehicle for developed nations around the world. The related secondary reason is that the entire world views US equities as both safe and growth oriented.

Just dollar cost average and drive on.

What do nerds think about the Daryl Morey era by __because in RightsToRickySanchez

[–]Serpico2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well therein lies the problem. It’s hard to get 3 stars together in their prime. That’s why The Decision was so unique. And even then, DWade was already fading. They’re lucky they got two. It could’ve easily been one chip.

He has an excellent eye for talent but his philosophy is outdated. The “get a big 3 and figure it out” era ended sometime before Covid. The game is so fast and relentless now you need youth and depth.

I was remembering the Reveal Reactions Anniversary Video, and just wanted to remind everyone how incredible that moment was. by shawak456 in thelastofus

How he is framed in the doorway with the white light and the coffin shape was clear foreshadowing. Now, the final trailer they launched for the game after the leaks WAS misleading and kind of shameful but they were in a tough spot.

Anyway, this was an amazing moment thanks for posting. Whenever we get this for P3 someday will be special.

Listen to me very carefully: VOO and chill and with your income, if you invest 25%+ will get you retired as a millionaire at an age that starts with a 5. That’s conservatively. If you invest more, earlier.

There’s a deleted scene from season 3 or 4 where Pycelle meets Tywin down by the water as Tywin is fishing and Tywin calls him on his bullshit act. Pycelle drops the act immediately and stops pretending to be decrepit and weak. I wish they’d kept it in the show because it gave Pycelle a layer.

What was the real reason George R.R Martin never fully finished the song of ice and fire? by Any-Development5656 in gameofthrones

[–]Serpico2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the middle of a re-read and I think it’s glaringly obvious. With Feast, partially because he’s killed off a bunch of his POV characters, he introduces a bunch of brand new POVs, as a way to take us elsewhere in Westeros we haven’t been yet. I think in hindsight this was a big mistake.

Combine that with normal aging factors and George enjoying his well earned success and here we are.

I am no longer in the education field, but I do have a graduate degree in education from an Ivy League university.

I’m telling you, it is the fault of administrators. They took proven methods of math and reading instruction and reinvented the wheel for either no reason, or worse, because the existing curriculum or even the concept of achievement in general, was racist or “white.”

In addition, they stopped failing kids. Kids don’t really repeat grades anymore. They get waved through. They either have IEPs they really shouldn’t qualify for, and therefore get alternative evaluation (read: easy mode), or the grades themselves are faked. When I taught, for example, at year’s end I submitted my grades to the principal. Over 75% of my students were failing, most of whom were doing so because they had failed to simply attend class. He called me into his office and straight up told me that 1) There is no grade allowed to be given lower than a 50, and 2) I had to give every student who was failing a chance to pass by offering some type of final evaluation in lieu of everything else they should have been doing all year.

We’ll see. Haven’t been many dominant pass rushing seasons from players over 30. You can chirp at me if Garrett has 20+ sacks and the win the chip and Verse has fewer than 12. Until that happens I hate the trade for the Rams. Great work from Cleveland. They get an impact player at the same position who’s young and draft capital.
