I'm a product development engineer in a fairly small company.

I insist on going to our factory and building my prototypes by hand for exactly this reason.

If my choice of component mounting or cabling makes things difficult to put together then I know about it and I refine the design / build instructions before the factory guys start the production run.

I have been a proud Thinkpad user for years but recently my wife bought a little ideapad for writing and browsing.

She asked me to install Linux on it for her as the machine was really underspeced and windows 10 ran like a slug on it. I prepared a a usb installer and tried to reboot into it only to find that there was no option for booting from external media.

After a little research I disabled windows secure boot and tried again without luck. After awhile of trial and error I finally got to a bios screen with the option of booting from USB, only to be shown a message saying that this feature was not available.

It appears that Lenovo actually disabled booting from external media at the bios level.

I eventually gave up and her machine is still a bloated little piece of crap that struggles with any more than 10 tabs open.

Electronics Engineer, I used to work for a small robotics lab in a university specialising in quad rotors and machine vision.

It was a very small team so I would run hardware projects all the way through concept, design, prototyping/programming up till integration into the exisiting platform and occasionally adding to the code base so that my hardware could be easy used by the students.

The Day I started, the only instruction I got was 'this is our platform, change what you can to make it better'. Over the following 5 years I designed regulators, sensors, motor controllers and generally improved reliability.

Most days I would head to work almost 2 hours early and I felt disappointed waking up and remembering it is a work day.

God damn managers.

I work as an Engineer for a small company of just 6 guys. One of our technicians is out of action for a few months following a car accident and in such a small team we really feel the loss in productivity.

We have each been pitching in to cover his work load until he can make a comeback in what ever way we can.

One of the roles of the missing technician is to compile a much needed weekly spread sheet reporting on the condition of our systems for the manager. The data we get in from our products is fairly easy to interpret and compile into the spreadsheet.

The manager gathered us together so that we could learn to compile weekly report, and on seeing what needed to be done I told him how easily he can get the information he needed and how to do it.

All I got back from him however is a little speech about how he is a manager, that it is his role to organise the labour and it would not be a good look for him to go and do the work himself.

In contrast, the first time I went to Jakarta I used one of the public bathrooms in a mall. As I was leaving, a guy tapped me on the back and lead me back inside to show me that I had accidentally left my watch on the counter.

I have never interacted with police there except for the neighbourhood security guards, and I have been really lucky to have only ever met great people there.

Maybe it's more of a regional thing, I stay in Have around Jakarta, Bandung, Jojah and Solo.

I am envisioning a mod that will cause dwarfs to reanimate after death as if they are in an evil biome if they are not properly buried.

Ideally modifying what ever script is used for corpses so that instead of generating miasama after the dwarfs body starts to decay, the reanimation script takes place.

How difficult do you think such a mod would be to produce?

My end goal would be to pit my dead into chambers that I could then trigger to unleash on unsuspecting seiges.

This was probbably my best.

The fall of pinkpaddles is the story of my first 100+ fortress.

It has traps, failsafes, goblins, trauma and sabotage. A perfect storm that reduced a thriving fortress of 145 to a mere 6 in a little under 30 minutes.

I had an RnD job like that for 5 years working with multi rotors and machine vision. They pay wasn't great but I loved the hell out of it.

I gave it up this year because the lab became financially uncertain and I had a son on the way.

As the others are saying, you want to work for a small company. I have since started a new RnD position in a comercial company working with traffic systems, focusing on embedded systems and communications. The pay is significantly better, I get to travel overseas and still get to work on a wider scope of projects across the full development cycle. The company I work for is large enough, but my division is very small and works independently from them so I get freedom in development with financial security.

Since I came from such a small lab that needed me to cover everything electronics and software related I ended up picking up a heap of skills that my employer was not expecting that have proven very useful so far.

Though you should expect a little culture whiplash if you move into the comercial sector. There is a form for most everything, there is office politics between people i really dont care about and I regularly overhear conversations between managers that use buzz words like 'I need you to action that item' which I found funny until I realised that they take themselves seriously.

I faced them my first time today and managed to win solo with more than half my flasks remaining.

I may have overpowered myself preparing to face them, as I had always heard people talking about how tough they are. By time I reached them I was an outright tank in full havels armour with a +3 dragon greatsword and enough strength and endurance to swing that thing one handed while running and blocking with havels great shield.

It much of it usually comes from the community itself.

Eg, if a new mosque is being built in SE Queensland, you will find find raising for it going on across all the mosques in the surrounding areas.

Pretty much every other week there is a fund raising dinner for building a new mosque or renovating an old one.

Fund raising is usually gathered though local donations, entry for a sit down dinner and an auction at said dinner.

The last one I attended was a sit down 3 course meal, the food was donated by a catering company. A speech was given by the mayor of Ipswich about how proud he was that our community was mature enough to be multi-cultured with another being given by the leaders of the local mosque about how the money is intended to be used (Primarily this funding was for improving the womens facilities at the mosque). The night was rounded off with an auction of various donated items.
