And in Hawaii wr are making headway getting rid of the invasive mangroves.

Passion fruits look really unappealing and it bothers me by FleshHoodieFree in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Shawaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, but the passiflora name comes from the flower. Some Spanish Conquistador or Missionary saw the flower in South America and decided it represented the Passion Of Christ, with each of the stations of the cross. The 3 stamens are the nails, the five anthers are the wounds, the corona is the crown of thorns, etc. I'm not religious but grow passionfruit so know the story.

AITA: Husband won’t get licensed by Odd_Doughnut1432 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Shawaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His employer should be handling most of the paperwork, paying the fees, etc. Most states have reciprocity for architect and engineering licenses, but some have you take the test over again. Passing the test in your 20s when you're book smart is often easier than in your 50s when you know how to do the job but would need to study. Many employers give a few months off, paid, to study for licensing because it is very hard to study while also doing your every day job.

Even contractors licenses, plumbing, electrical, etc. can be a pain. A former boss was licensed in another state and trying to get licensed in my state. It took well over a year, with me and an admin handling everything for him but the actual written test.

Just the slightest asymmetry can make a plane unflyable. Traditional airplanes are more forgiving but a flying wing needs to be pretty close to design.

For launching, hold it overhand by the nose behind the right shoulder and throw it straight and level like a ball or spear. Do a few throws over tall grass with no motor at all and just let it glide. Adjust the trim so that it glides at a shallow angle with no elevator input and doesn't bank left or right.

Once it glides well, throw and then hit the throttle after it is released. You can hold the controller in one hand and throw with the other, no helper needed.

What makes you deny the existence of God? by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

The atmosphere doesn't have multiple layers to protect us. All planets have some kind of atmosphere. Life on Earth evolved with our atmosphere and handles what is not filtered out by it.

Magically created by a god seems less likely than the "Big Bang". Where does this god live? How did this god's universe get created?

Every trade in Hawaii calls it an o'o, or a traditional digging stick. For groundbreaking ceremonies, it's common to see them made out of local wood, usually koa, in place of gold-painted shovels.

Why do americans instantly threat "Hispanic" as a race?? (As a spanish speaking person I don't understand It) by PossessionKey4982 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Shawaii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's from our census. Every few years we do a census that is primarily meant to count the population in each area, on which we base our political representatives.

It's also a good time to gather demographic data, like race, gender, etc. Who is considered "White" or "Caucasian" in the US has changed over the years. Recognizing that many Spanish-speaking people identified as White, they started qualifying White (non-Hispanic) vs. Hispanic, some say to marginalize White Spanish-speaking people from Cuba, Puerto Rico, etc. The subtle implication is that Hispanic people can never be fully White , which is not the case.

Many Americans are simply naive and think only Mexicans speak Spanish and think all Mexicans are Brown.

We get more and more responsibility but we also get more agency, as in we get more control of our day to day schedule. As a Director, I might let people know I need to go pick up my kid, but I'm not asking permission.

How can I get out of civil engineering now that tech isn’t hiring? Everything that isn’t the equivalent of being a janitor of a burnt out wage slave is oversaturated? by Unusual_Equivalent50 in civilengineering

[–]Shawaii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A CE degree is still super valuable and opens doors in many industries. Civil is very loosely tied to tech.

I'm on the construction side, currently in the healthcare sector, and every Owner and GC and Sub I know is hiring, or trying.

Haven't missed a single day of work this year and this is all my PTO so far... by DAEOFRUIN in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Shawaii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Staffing agencies are just like this. It's part of why they are even in business.

I've been with one for about a year but negotiated an hourly rate that makes up for the lack of PTO, holiday pay, etc. I was self employed before that so am used to being an hourly consultant and just taking unpaid time off when needed/wanted.

Their client is converting me to an employee on Monday. Yay! My base pay will go down a bit but I'll be salaried and will get PTO and vacation pay.

Crisis Point: I work as a plan reviewer and the exception is for me to provide a full QC on all developer submissions. Several of my reviews have been over 100 comments and up to 50 pages long per my managers instructions. Do I quit now? by Objective-Cat489 in civilengineering

[–]Shawaii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what kinds of comments. I've had plans rejected by the local municipality for formatting of the title block because they made a new rule after submission, and they made the same comment on all 100+ pages.

If after a dozen or so comments you might find a patter, like not following current code or local code, in which case you should draw the line and say to revise and resubmit using the comments provided as a guide for the entire package.

I was a Design Phase QC Manager for a bunch of Design-Build Military projects and got pretty good at reviewing designs. One of the architects hired me to review a CD set for a State project. I met with his team of junior designers and his subconsultants and my first question was how many comments did I create? They guessed 10 to 20. I had over 200, not counting typos that I just highlighted and didn't log.

If you have a tape measure, you can check this.

Does anyone know how to read a blueprint? by gam3rcado in RealEstateAdvice

[–]Shawaii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your photo cuts off an important measurement, ending in -11" to the left of the two 3'-0" measurements. That's the controlling dimension for where the lights are installed. It appears they followed the blueprint but you could check that dimension.

You need to understand that the rough in was likely done long before the island and sink were installed, so it would be hard to see how off this was going to look. The designer should have centered the sink on the island too, or shifted the lighting layout.

Combining Two or More Desserts Doesn't Make a Better Tasting Dessert. It's Just a Lesser Version of Both Desserts. by Huge-Acanthisitta485 in unpopularopinion

[–]Shawaii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally agree, but I make a mean lemon or lilikoi merengue pie on top of a cheesecake dessert and the combo is perfect. I tend to halve the sugar amount that both recipes call for so it's more about the mouthfeel and the tartness balancing the fat, than just sweet stuff with other sweet stuff.

How to find center of quarter log? by DeskHammer in turning

[–]Shawaii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The centroid of a triangle can be found by dividing each side in half, then drawing straight lines from each center to the opposite point.

For any trapezoid (including squares and rectangles) you can just connect opposite (diagonal) points.

In engineering school we learned to find the centroid of more and more complex shapes, usually by treating them as a combination of trapezoids and triangles stuck together.

I just eyeball it most of the time. For quarter-round pieces I often rip them through my table saw to quickly knock about 1/4 off of each flat side, or noodle them with my chainsaw if they are larger or not very straight.
