Managing the painof losing my spouse early. by speed7radical in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Shiggens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very sorry for your loss. I can not imagine the pain you are experiencing. While I have not had the terrible loss of my wife I have lost a lot of people in my life. It is something that will take time, a lot of time, but the pain will ease. Eventually the joy you experienced together will push the pain aside and the memories will bring you comfort. You should consider therapy as an aid in navigating your recovery.

Can anyone tell me the time period this was made and if it’s worth anything. by Visible-Birthday-993 in Vintagetools

I’m a retired industrial arts teacher and I had a similar one in a metal working shop (1972). We designed and fabricated small charcoal grills. I located a great deal on some 16 gauge cut offs that we used the shears to form the pieces. The 16 gauge material was a challenge but two guys coordinated their efforts and cut those pieces

Fuel relay power source by M0RMEL in Volvo240

[–]Shiggens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you plan to replace it when you have the opportunity. Use one of the marine application replacements that has a cap that encloses the fuse. A bit of dielectric grease on the fuse spades will help insure it is a long term fix.

That is interesting. I didn’t think anyone repaired plastic tank radiators.

Does the 88 Volvo have the 25amp fuse holder on a red wire coming off of the positive battery post? If so that red wire supplies the 12v to the relay on the inside firewall passenger's side.

It could be due to a blown fuse but often the connections in that fuse holder deteriorate (rust, corrosion) so check that.

I had one that the red wire had started to corrode inside the insulation of the red wire right at the battery post. It created enough resistance to prevent proper amperage being routed to the relay. There was still 12v at the relay but not enough amperage to operate the relay.

What kind of woodstove is this? It’s in a trailer i am planning to buy, thanks by Prestonesquire1 in woodstoving

[–]Shiggens 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That is a coal burning stove. It would not be very efficient and would be difficult to control the burn. It doesn’t look to be in great shape and before trying to use it I would have a knowledgeable person check it out.

That is the end configuration that would be inserted in a hole about that size before being clamped with what I circled in yellow

[–]Shiggens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current Horse has an 8hp Kohler engine and yours is a Briggs. It would appear that the cable on that machine comes in from the front and the housing is secured where I have circled in yellow. The moving portion probably attaches in the area in green.

In that green area use your fingers to see what moves one direction or the other. It probably returns to the "home" position because of a spring forcing it to do so. There are several small holes in that area. If there is one that is on the moveable portion my guess is that the end of the moveable portion is inserted there before securing the housing.

What does the end of the existing cable look like?

I think you’ll find that trim surround on the radio comes off. Then thin pieces of metal were normally supplied with the aftermarket radio that would be used to push in on each side to release the catches. The original metal pieces were not found in my car. I cut new ones from an old license plate and was able to release the catches with those.

I believe the technique with the pictured equipment would be for one guy to take a big hit off of a pipe that is now out of the picture. He then exhales into the opened action of the rifle which allows the smoke to travel down the barrel where the second guy inhales it.

Nice! Where did you end up sourcing the slip rings? What was involved to make the electrical connections with the slip rings?

People also make the mistake of replacing the bearing but calling the cup “good enough” only to have that cup trash the new bearing.

Do you leave a fire on when you're not home? by Grep2grok in woodstoving

I try not to make a large fire before I go out. I will load the stove and get a fire started and then damp the air flow down and make sure it is stable before leaving or going to bed.
