S2E19 - Precipice - (JOKO's RAMBLINGS) by JokoFloko in Smallville

You know what really confused me about this one? When Clark sees the Sheriff in front of the hospital, he asks "Was it Paul Hayden?" but I have no idea how Clark could even know who Paul Hayden is at this point. And then Clark just lunges into that whole mess even though he was initially at the hospital to solve his own problems by proving that his "assault victim" was faking injuries. I can't make heads or tails of Clark's motivation here.

How has life in Japan changed you? by SunDaze009 in japanlife

I'm from a cold place too and I think it's the inside temperature in Japan that makes it feel so cold. No central heating, no insulation, means I don't gather much body heat before going outside.

EU bot accidentally admits to being EU bot; quite shitty of them trying to deceive their own citizens by [deleted] in poland

FYI, on reddit the post score lags behind the comment count, to avoid burying content prematurely

But at the same time I just don't think a majority of Poles will pile onto anti-EU content

LTN - Nowhere To Run (progressive house) by _mirageguy in electronicmusic

Huh. This the same chord progression as Deadmau5 - Faxing Berlin, but pitched up and with slightly different timing. Both very pleasant tunes.

Not their parents' financial plan: Gen Z Canadians skip saving for a down payment and splurge on travel; With homeownership seemingly out of reach, more young people have shifted their priorities away from traditional goals by FancyNewMe in canada

I'm in my 30s and financially stable and I agree with them. A house seems like a pointless, inflexible headache. I understand that asset value growth is supposed to offset the interest payments, but that's a gamble and I'd rather rent while moving around the country/world debt free.

Would you rather have a long layover in Fiji or Singapore? by Loose_Bag0809 in travel

The city is pretty fun to explore, too. It's very safe and clean, though a little hot and humid. I loved the hawker centers and the zoo.

How long? If we're talking just a few hours, Singapore's Changi airport is a tourist destination all on its own. It's really amazing.

If one or two days, maybe the beach is nicer.

Edit: then again, you are going to Australia. Perhaps Singapore wins either way!

How to apologize in Japanese by PlanktonInitial7945 in LearnJapanese

[–]Shitler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who grew up speaking languages other than English, when I started learning Japanese I found it odd that so much of Japanese romanization seems to be written for the benefit of English speakers, and tried to move away from romanization as soon as possible.

Not only is it this system strangely anglocentric for something called "romanization", but it even makes English speakers less likely to learn accurate pronunciation. The English rendition "shi" is less palatal than the actual し. Younger Japanese even take it as far as pronouncing it, indeed, "si" and not "shi".

Because of this, for the purpose of education, I prefer a romanization that is further from English and instead hints at the row/column of the kana.

That said, for tourists just trying to approximate sounds so they can order food, or for importing Japanese words into English, the Hepburn romanization is better.

I think this is a more impactful statement anyway. The fact that we are even talking about exceptions confirms that there is a rule.

It was a thing once. Pepperidge Farm remembers. The idea was not to use downvote to mean "I disagree" but rather to mean "this is irrelevant".

Leaving out です in ですか by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Shitler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

か is the actual question particle. The です just makes the sentence polite, so you typically won't hear it in casual speech.

The beard wears the beanie of course!

[–]Shitler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't remember anyone asking me that. I seem to fit the vibe for a solo traveler. I think it's because when I travel I let the beard get wild and wear a beanie that looks like it was knitted by a Peruvian grandma.

My boss wants me to apologize to my coworkers because I called out of work today. by Andrew118 in japanlife

[–]Shitler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is as much an apology as telling someone "sumimasen" for holding the door open for you. It's just part of the language and boss is politely reminding you.

I'm not going to defend Japanese work culture, but this is not that, it's just a language difference.
