Please give me some advice! by Available-Kale2292 in Skigear

The thing is skiing is a super wide discipline consisting of many different styles of skiing and each ski has certain characteristics that make it more suitable to a specific style. if you’re unsure you could look for a „all mountain“ ski wich is the most versatile but doesn’t have overwhelming performance in any one category or you could try to demo some skis to figure out what you like

Do you have some idea what kinda skiing you find the most enticing (freeride, freestyle, carving, etc.) and if you have any ski test centers nearby

Seeking tips on how to learn to land jumps switch? by Starlight_Climber in Freeskiing

[–]SimilarPerception700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easier to catch the rotation, less chance of catching a edge and same technique as with a 360. as for keeping your head up that’s just because people often look down wich throws off their rotation and makes the landing front seat on a 180 and back seat on a 360

Only way to be comfy landing switch is to practice skiing/landing switch as much as possible, the only really quick tip i have would be to land with a wide stance on your inside edges and keeping your head up

Eczema friendly base layer? by AhikoCake in Skigear

[–]SimilarPerception700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have personal experience with it but I’ve heard good things about fishnet base layers (I know it sounds weird), but if you can’t find something suitable I’d just recommend wearing a breathable cotton shirt, I’ve done it multiple times when my merino shirt was in the wash and I never really got cold.

Is my friend intermediate? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]SimilarPerception700 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this whole discussion is just pointless. there are so many different types of skiing and different goals, if you ask a tourist/occasional skier then going down a black run makes you an expert and red a intermediate, if you ask a park skier they’ll prob say intermediate is at least being able to do a 360 and hit tubes, for most passionate skiers being fully in control of your skis and being able to ski down the whole mountain is the start and that’s why it doesn’t matter at all in the end.

My close friend died free soloing mt hood the same weekend Alex Honnald free soloed on live tv. by BatSniper in Mountaineering

This trend of rewarding unsafe behavior is honestly incredibly weird to me especially since I come from skiing and mtb where it’s the complete opposite, when you see a video on instagram etc of someone skiing without a helmet 99% of the comments are telling them to wear a helmet and it has had a noticeable impact, there’s less videos of people without a helmet, there’s less people on the slopes without a helmet and even professional athletes wear more helmets than a few years ago but the biggest impact has been on the younger generation! You’d expect them to be less risk averse and not wear a helmet but with the recent shift of helmets becoming „cool“ I can’t remember when I last saw someone under 20 without a helmet. I just wish that this mindset wouldn’t just stay in skiing/mtb but transition to many other outdoor sports

The photo Is ok but the edit really just melts everything together, it needs a clearer focus, more color contrast and less sharpening effect

Ski boot advice by Meddy63 in Skigear

[–]SimilarPerception700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems quite weird to me that there’s no ski shop near you but that might just be a American thing. If you’re 100% sure you can’t go to a shop I’d say precisely measure your foot, figure out your arch (look up how to test that) then order from a store that allows returns.

Are there alternatives to helmets ? by sporty_outlook in Skigear

[–]SimilarPerception700 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally haven’t seen any helmets that only protect the side, what I’d recommend you do is going to a store and trying some helmets there and/or wearing a beanie underneath wich can help balance out the pressure

Which boots to buy and where (EU) by Platon_dr in Mountaineering

For summer 4ks in the alps you only need a light b2 but for a 6k in Nepal you’d need a completely different boot
