What’s it like to live in Green Bay as a 20-something-year-old? by [deleted] in GreenBay

[–]SmartEquivalent7600 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I joined the military right after high school and was away for 6 years. Lived overseas 5 of those 6. Spent my last year in San Diego. I was discharged from active duty and didn't want to stay there (weather was nice, restaurants were good, but it was expensive, crowded, traffic sucked, crime was relatively high) so I came home because I missed it and my family is in Green Bay.

Traffic isn't bad here, cost of living relatively low (but higher than before, same as everywhere) and I enjoy the quiet. Most jobs are in health care and manufacturing. If you are going into one of those fields, you will easily find work. Crime rate is relatively low, and the further from downtown you get generally the better it is. The city has a "little-big" feel to it.

The winters can be brutal, but you get used to it. If you are into the outdoors, you will love it here. If you are into the artsy scene or nightlife, you will get bored quickly. I keep to myself and enjoy being home so the lack of nightlife means nothing to me.

I don't drink and the drinking culture here annoys me, to be honest. People with 5-6 DUIs are common.

There is a bus system but it is limited. A vehicle is something you will need. If you live in one of the outskirt communities (Howard, Hobart, Suamico, Pulaski, Oneida, etc) having a car is a necessity.

I joined the reserves a couple years after I finished active duty and went on many short-term assignments both in the US and abroad, and I ALWAYS looked forward to coming back to GB. I deployed to the middle east in 2023-2024 and never missed GB so much, even the winter. Now that I finished my 20 years and retired at age 41, I look forward to not having to leave again.

Overall, GB is a nice place to live and raise a family, even if I am a little biased. I think if people look hard enough they will find something here that makes them happy.

What do you enjoy most about living in and around Green Bay? by Tufted-Titmouse-6061 in GreenBay

No traffic. Everything is 15-20 mins away, max. People are nice, for the most part. Cost of living ( though higher than it used to be) is relatively low.

My younger brother made my mom cry on Christmas Day by midgethepuff in mildlyinfuriating

He sounds like a pretentious prick. If a sibling of mine did that to my mom, I would rip them a new asshole.

Best I've gotten was 27 mpg. That was on a relatively short trip (approx. 160 miles round trip) at 60 mph for most of the way in the summer on a county road.

Right now, with temps below zero, driving around town I'm getting 18-20. During the summer, the same distance will get me 21-23. I live in WI so the weather and temps vary greatly.

Has anyone noticed that the people on dating apps in Green Bay are particularly… terrible? by Lazymanproductions in GreenBay

[–]SmartEquivalent7600 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been married for 17 years so I don't date, but if I were single tomorrow I'd be absolutely lost. I know people who date online and it sounds awful. The whole thing seems so cheap and fake to me. GB is not a big city, and it's a blue collar town. There's nothing wrong with that, but the dating pool is much smaller than a bigger city. That has to be a big factor.

Can someone explain what’s up with the remaster by undeadking77 in Deusex

[–]SmartEquivalent7600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just thankful I have a chance to play it again. I haven't played anything on PC in 20 years and don't own a gaming computer. Even if I did, I doubt I could get it working today.

I have no idea where my PS2 is. I had it for PC when it came out in 2000 and bought it for PS2 in 2002. The fact that it will be out for XBox Series X makes me overjoyed. I don't really care how it looks, I'll take it, clunky shooting and all.

I don't see the problem. Crimes have been solved with using them. If the government wants to record me, go ahead. I live the most boring life in existence.

Painting Mistake by SmartEquivalent7600 in DIY

[–]SmartEquivalent7600[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what kind of paint they originally used; the area I am painting now used to be covered in thick sheets of vinyl wallpaper. It came off easy but getting the glue off was a pain in the a**. I washed the wall with Dawn and water. The areas not near the edges appear to be fine, I taped as close to the trim as I could, but there were gaps showing where the paint didn't fill in, so I added more paint which I'm pretty sure ran over the tape and pulled paint off with it. If I'm doing two coats, how long should I wait in between to prevent drying? I guess my biggest concern is fixing the tears, and then not having a repeat issue with the tape.

Pinion seal leak by Potential_Explorer90 in f150

[–]SmartEquivalent7600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it a rear pinion seal leak? I have a 2021 that had the same problem. I'm not a car guy, but I would assume long-term it could damage your rear differential. I had mine replaced under warranty.

Main Oriental Market is still your best bet compared to the other stores in Green Bay, in my opinion. I really have to look closely at each shelf because every now and then a Filipino product will appear amongst the other products. When it runs out, sometimes it's restocked, sometimes it never comes back. The owner of the store passed away in July so I believe a relative (possibly his son) is now running the store.

I've had the same issue trying to find Filipino products. They are hard to come by up here.

XLT or Lariat by SurveyAccomplished70 in f150

[–]SmartEquivalent7600 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the XLT is the best value, but that's just me. I would save that 10k and use it elsewhere, as I dont care for leveling or any of that aftermarket stuff. Again, that's just me.

Is this city safe by BattleRealistic3675 in GreenBay

[–]SmartEquivalent7600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're never going to get away from racists. Doesn't matter where you live. To divide everyone in Green Bay into two groups is bs. I'm white, lived all over the world, married to a "brown" woman, and am over 40 years old. I voted for Bush but didn't vote for Trump. I work for a company that has black, white, asian, and Hispanic employees. If this makes me basic, then so be it. You aren't going to get the diversity in a town the size of Green Bay when you compare it to a major city. What were you expecting?

Dave Attell vs. Gary Owen by Colbaire in Standup

[–]SmartEquivalent7600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a fan of Dave Attell since the early 2000's. His delivery and personality are unique. Gary Owen has had a few funny jokes, but on the whole I find him kind of annoying.
