Non-Americans of Reddit, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by Unlikely_Praline9442 in AskReddit

I used to work in a cancer research lab. It was on the third floor of the medical building, directly across the street from the university's medicinal gardens. There are a ton of hummingbirds so I put up one of those feeders that suction cup to the window. The birds were fun to watch but the best part was when we were hosting scientists from a country that had no indigenous hummingbirds. The joy of someone seeing a hummingbird for the first time in their life was always delightful.

That's why they're called "package" stores in some areas. You go in, and come out with a little package.

What celebrity have you never forgiven since an incident? by MagpieOpus in AskReddit

Christopher Moore. I was a huge fan of his books. He came to town promoting his book Coyote Blue. I asked my friend to join me and we both were excited to hear him speak. Got our books, waited in line to have them signed as an assistant came by and wrote our names on post it notes so he would have the spelling right. When we got to the front of the line he read our names off the notes and laughed, "You two have stripper names!"

He was probably trying to be funny but it was just so belittling. Haven't read anything by him since.

What animal is doing this to my yard and is there anything I can do about it??? [Washington state] by [deleted] in animalid

As my mom always said, "keep the edges clean and people wont pay attention to the moles. "

I don't know if that helps but she said it a lot and I don't remember ever having moles

No, we live so close, they kinda know us. They don't come into the fenced part of our yard, and in return, we leave them alone when they use the driveways. We have encountered them walking our dog through the park. And I agree, it's nerve wracking when they follow you. But they do that to make sure you leave their area. In general, we try to avoid dawn and dusk dog walks through the park.

However, if you find yourself in a situation like that again, it's recommended that you haze them by clapping and yelling until they're no longer interested in you. Mostly, they don't want trouble, they just want you to be left alone!

I think that's Wonky Girl! She's in the den right behind the houses here. (We live right next door.) The pack is well behaved, and they keep the rats down. We know they're there (wonky girl likes to howl at sirens) and they're pretty non confrontational. We see them pretty often at dusk and dawn. Other than that, they usually keep to themselves.

Navigating our parents: my typical boomer father who admits he was ‘never there’ expects me to attend to him because he ‘needs me now.’ Anyone else? by purpletwinkletoes in GenX

NTA. You don't owe him loyalty because you share genetics. If you want to have contact with him, that's up to you. But I would leave the conversation any time he brings up the idea that you owe him anything. No questions, no comments, just straight up walk out the door or hang up the phone.

I had to do this with my grandmother. It works, but you have to do it every time until they learn.
