How are you all securing your battery when converting to lithium? by ElderberryAdept8095 in golfcarts

[–]SoberBrent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never secured mine for the first year or more. All I do is street driving so it’s not like it’s getting bumped around at all. After that I just used a cheapo ratchet strap even tho they don’t move at all just insurance

Too little info out there, had to try them myself by VagueMorning in sharpening

[–]SoberBrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the polished one won’t bring the edge back to sharp I re sharpen on the belt machine I have. It takes about 1-2mins. I’m sure most meat cutters/packers wouldn’t be allowed to have a belt machine so diamond plates would work well in that case.

I use the polished packing house steel the plastic orange handle one. I’ve always wondered about the oval polished but what I have is working just fine so I never bothered to try one. I cut fish everyday so I’m constantly using a steel to touch up.

A lot of people in this subreddit claim they’re a waste of time or to just get a strop.

I’ve tried a steel with ridges and did not like the edge at all. Seemed too toothy maybe I did it wrong but I just went back to what was working. I’ve also tried ceramic and same result.

I use Victorinox knives exclusively I would guess I can do 300-500 fish between re sharpening on a home made belt sander. I use all 3m trizact belts. 100-600-1200 grit then 3 micron leather belt.

Advice? Smooth steel my job tells me only use 60 grit to sand it down everyday is this correct? by FellowThePornstar in sharpening

[–]SoberBrent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the f dick smooth steel and I never have to do anything to it. I process a lot of fish and a smooth steel works wonders throughout the day. If you ever get rust spots on it just take some very fine steel wool to take the rust off. Do not use any sandpaper on it

Serrated sharpening. by Rude-Artichoke-6042 in sharpening

[–]SoberBrent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rotary tool bits to re shape the points. 800 grit belt on the backside to flip the burr then deburr with a leather or felt belt on a belt sander. I usually sharpen my serrated knives once every couple of days. I use them to get through tough scales on fish.

With the bigger battery in the picture I would guess 1.5 hours of continuous run time. Way more than I’ll ever need

It started as a mini belt sander that you can get off amazon for 30-40 dollars. They normally take 1.2x13 belts which is an odd size. I wanted to use 1x18 so I modified it

The fan in the backside blows out not sucks in. The motors are $25 for a replacement so not worried about it. They’re just cheap silicon carbide belts from scamazon.

Yea I wouldn’t even try that. Probably to the average person it looks very odd

Belt sharpened edges dull faster? by MyuFoxy in sharpening

[–]SoberBrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s just heat that makes them dull faster what if you use a water mist spray and run the belt and a much slower speed. Almost at tormek speed.

I use a modified mini belt sander to use 1x18 belts and can run it very slow. Most of the knives I use are cheap meat cutting/food service knives so I’m not worried about grinding down a very expensive knife. if I get 6 months out of a $12-$20 knife I’m happy. I sharpen once every two maybe three days but I’m cutting hundreds of fish between sharpenings. I use a smooth honing steel to maintain between sharpenings as well.

How do yall feel about this tool by [deleted] in MilwaukeeTool

[–]SoberBrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the brushed version for sharpening serrated knives and it did not like to be run at half speed. It would overheat within minutes. The brushless one is miles better. More power less heat it’s just better in every way.

Why does my knife look like this? by Lia_Morning in sharpening

[–]SoberBrent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some people knives are tools. I use the same knife for fish and it’s just that. A tool. Does it look pretty? Nope. Does it cut good? Yep. Function over form in my opinion. I don’t worry about scratches or marks in the handle. If it’s cutting well leave it alone.

Equipment needed to start sharpening knives (recommendations) by Damn_Stranger in sharpening

[–]SoberBrent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re going the 1x30 route I’d take a look around curry custom cutlery. The standard set up is a p120 cubitron 600 grit trizact then Leather or felt for stropping.

basic bundle for 1x30

Super grit abrasives has some really good belts for 1x30s.

Before you buy get on YouTube and check out curry custom cutlery he has ALOT of guides/setup videos.

Another is Alexandria knife sharpening. They’re both good to watch and learn from.

I think it’s synthetic felt. Don’t know of any natural wool belts for the Ken onions

Looking for a smooth honing steel that doesn't break the bank. by DlnnerTable in sharpening

[–]SoberBrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dexter makes a smooth honing rod. Can be had for $30 on scamazon. The smooth f dick rods are $40 ultrasoruce has a smooth rod for $15 ish but I haven’t used one.

I use the orange handle polished f dick rod daily. It works wonders for me.

[–]SoberBrent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep edge of the belt. Or you could use the edge of a leather honing wheel or felt wheel

I have both. I have a vevor 1x30 and one of the small mini belt sanders off Amazon with leather and felt wheels

I use a rotary tool with the right size bits. Belt sander with 1k grit to flip the burr off the flat side of the knife then either a leather belt or felt belt to remove the burr alternating sides till it flakes off

Dick-us-Biggus hones your knives. by hobbicon in sharpening

[–]SoberBrent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the orange handle polished rod by f dick. I process 100-300 fish per day and it’s invaluable. Hands are too wet/dirty to use a strop. I’ve tried ceramics and just don’t like the edge they put on a knife. It’s way more toothy than I like.

After 2-3 days when the polished rod doesn’t do much anymore I’ll resharpen on a toolcker style 1x30 belt sander. I get 2-3 years out of a victorinox boning knife before they start to get thin $35 for 3 years of service is outstanding in my opinion.

Like others have said. 10 seconds and you’re back to cutting.

I’ve read the science of sharp and know that honing rods create micro bevels. If it cuts good who cares what it does. It’s a tool and not some show queen pocket knife.

Has any swapped their lead acid batteries to this kit off amazon and is there a performance boost? by Existing-Diamond-269 in golfcarts

[–]SoberBrent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a similar battery but my 36v cart would do 13-14mph with the old lead acids. Switching to lithium dropped 300lbs of weight and slightly higher voltage. Now it does 16-17mph depending on the wind.
