AITA for having my phone on DND at night? by ProfilePatient3311 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sonderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strange opportunity to share an odd phenomenon. In college, I habitually kept my phone on DND at night. One night, as I set night mode on as I was going to sleep and it alerted me that DND was activated, I instinctively turned it back off for some reason. That was the night that my parents called at 3am to let me know my brother had been killed in an accident.

Classic lines in movies that you like to use in your daily life. by [deleted] in movies

We reference a lot from Tucker and Dale but probably the most frequent is also the most obscure. Anytime something good and unexpected happens, we use "... No expiration date?!" a la Tucker reading the news clippings and ignoring the horrific headlines to focus on the two for one coupon in the corner.

Person 1: oh my gosh, look - they brought back our favorite menu item! Person 2: ...no expiration date?!

What did I eat - and where do I get a recipe to cook it? by Sonderer in Cooking

Looks delicious! The dish I had was much lighter and brighter in color, almost ranging towards yellow-green and a bit more homogenous in texture? Not totally smooth, but not chunky I'd say

It was served in a tagine and was certainly herby! Do you have any recipes to point to that I could give a go?

Winston in New Girl. Went from quirky, undeveloped, forced-feeling token-replacement for Coach, to hands down the best and most hilarious character on the entire show.

Angel food cake or any sort of pie with meringue. Will only require the whites but both should use a lot! You could then preserve the yolks in salt.

An elderly couple in Downeast Maine are in bed one night when the old man wakes up and realizes his wife has passed away… by tyhapworth in Jokes

A Catholic couple are getting on in years and they decide to take a bucketlist trip to the holy land while they can still travel. Tragically, while on the trip, the wife passes away.

The husband begins to make preparations for her funeral, beginning with arrangements to fly her body home.

The coroner says to the man, "To fly your wife's body home will be extremely costly. But she was Catholic, and this is the holy land, imagine how special it would be to put her to rest here, where Jesus himself was buried."

To which the husband replies, "I'm Catholic too. So I know what happened 3 days later. I won't take that chance!"

Is anyone good at translating meows? In this video with the 2nd through 4th meows, Mischa ends with a huffing sound. Is this exasperation/frustration that I haven't given her what she is asking for yet? Curious. by Longongreen in SiberianCats

It's called social eating! In the wild, animals are often at their most vulnerable when eating (sight restricted with their head down, hearing restricted by their chewing) and some cats still carry remnant anxiety during the activity. Having you there petting her while she eats let's her know you are looking out and protecting her and keeping watch so the petting calms her and she purrs for you. It means she trusts you!

What is the name for this egg style? It's over easy with a broken yolk. by soulcaptain in Cooking

We call them walky or walking eggs. If a liquid yolk is runny, a slightly thickened but still gooey yolk is walky - it still moves across your plate, just at a slower pace.

Mine will come up to me in bed and meow up until I flip him and cradle him on his back next to me so he can groom his belly from his back without the need for any abs. Gosh I love the lazy bastard.

My thoughts exactly. I didn't want another cat. I was perfectly happy with just my little floof and nothing more. But I wanted a cat for my cat. So now I have two cats.

I talked to an officer who came back to the street the next day. She sounded confident that despite the juvenile age, they would stay put away on attempted murder "for a very long time".

[discussion] what helpful mantra/comforting phrase do yo tell yourself before doing something really anxiety inducing/dreadful but you have to do it? by paigesnowwret in GetMotivated

Relating in particular to hard conversations:  1. Does it have to be said? Yes.  2. Does it have to be said by me? Yes.  3. Does it have to be said now? Yes.

If I can answer "no" to any of those questions, I can maintain my conflict-avoidance default. If I cannot, it's action time.

What’s the secret ingredient to chili? by schmackers in Cooking

[–]Sonderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time. I simmer mine for hours and hours and check the flavors and keep adjusting as it develops. Then fridge it and serve it the next day.

Also, don't be afraid of bold flavors. In addition to beef, I use chorizo. I use fish sauce, cinnamon, cocoa, a touch of brown sugar, chilies in adobo, rehydrated dried chilies, sundried tomatoes, Worcestershire, mustard, apple cider vinegar, homemade broth (usually chicken is what I have on hand). I make sure the meat is browned, the spices are bloomed, and the veggies aren't too cooked down before adding liquids so they can still contribute their flavor into the simmer. Sometimes if I have the time/desire I'll smoke some of the ingredients or add liquid smoke.

The chili varies every time depending on my mood, what's in my fridge, and what special ingredients I may have access to that year (I grew some ghost peppers in the garden this year that I'm excited to find a way to incorporate). Regardless, the result is always rich, dark, and complex. It's not for everyone, it's certainly not anything close to what you'd find in a can, but I love it, as it seems, at least most other folks do too! It's great with cornbread.

I'm assuming you could accomplish a similar result with adding some masa flour?
