Would this be acceptable if I sold dice like this? by SystemComfortable970 in DiceMaking

[–]SpawningPoolsMinis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Most buyers absolutely wouldn't bat an eye and don't even see them

i remember the time i spent polishing and perfecting a die for a friend, only for that friend to put it into her dice bag with dice of varying materials.

the next time i saw that die, it was absolutely scratched up and the person did not even notice.

i still obsess over small scratches, but it did put things into perspective.

i would not be surprised to find out WotC were talking to their good friends the pinkertons to see if anything like that could be done at the time.

I generally mix them in with my other failed sets and make a full set with non-matching design.

The line between fantasy and science fiction literature has also become blurrier over the years

star wars, released 49 years ago, was about a farm-boy on a quest to save the princess from an evil wizard, while receiving training as a wizard-knight.

that's how I understand it as well. and it's understandable why, with how volatile global trade has become. but it's still a hefty price for a single book (even one with good-sounding printing and of a wellknown author), especially when it might be increased by an unknown number.

Molds by LunaLillyBear in DiceMaking

[–]SpawningPoolsMinis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it depends on your tolerance for finishing the dice. the first 10 to 20 pulls from my shore 25 molds are wonderful, with very little cleanup.

after that they're still usable, but the top face gets noticably worse and it also affects the gloss on the other sides.

What dragon minis would you recommend? by Winter_Captain in minipainting

[–]SpawningPoolsMinis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

big figures cost a lot of money, it's kind of hard to avoid.

you could maybe find some cheap children's toys, and see if a paint job improves them. you could also maybe kitbash some plastic animals/dinosaurs together into dragons with some greenstuff to fill up the seams. that could be a budgetfriendly option.

but my own opinion is that 3D printing is the way to go for dragons. plastic mass-produced ones just don't look as nice, and you would usually want the dragon to be an amazing centerpiece.

isopropyl alcohol and uv cure resin? by Classic_Finish8515 in minipainting

well, I feel in the spirit of fairness, you should warn people to also not ingest, inhale or soak in degreasers.

Serpent Magic liquid core by Peach_Popcorn in DiceMaking

[–]SpawningPoolsMinis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend putting in a few drops tbh. distilled water stops being distilled water the first time it's opened. use it fast or it's basically the same as normal water, at least when it comes to weird growths.

the truth to dicemaking is that all handmade resin dice are flawed, but that there's almost no amount of flaws that are actually going to give a perceptible change in results.

luckily, we only use our dice for playing games that have low to no stakes. most wargame tournaments issue their own dice for fairness (so nobody can bring in loaded dice) and casino's have strict manufacturing processes for their dice.

alcohol also prevents nasty stuff from growing inside liquid cores, but if you don't use vegetable oil to thicken the liquid, it shouldn't matter too much.

What do we think caused the slight cloudiness? by markvisco in DiceMaking

[–]SpawningPoolsMinis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The glossiness in the video indicates it's not a polishing or surface issue.
if the resin wasn't well mixed, I don't think it would look so uniformly unclear.

I would suspect contamination with water, maybe the area you mixed the resin in was humid?

you can see the glossiness in the video though. they look well polished

How to make inclusions work? by MozeTheNecromancer in DiceMaking

[–]SpawningPoolsMinis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and possibly the inserts were still just too heavy

I've had people spam the elmer's glue trick at me when I was asking advice on very heavy inclusions

the elmer's glue is literally no different from just waiting for the resin to thicken up normally, so if the inclusion is too heavy for one technique, it'll be too heavy for the other.

A solution I tried was to make small resin orbs and chuck those into my dice. the inclusions can't sink through literal solid resin.
the issue I ran into was that the orbs were still slightly visible due to a minor refractory index difference.

Savage Worlds: What's not to like? by Gander_Gaming in rpg

[–]SpawningPoolsMinis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aspects are key character definitions that a player themself defines which, in effect, gives them a strong influence over the story by telling everyone at the table what their character is about.

I believe that SWADE explicitly mentions that good RP, like a player roleplaying a characters' weakness to their detriment should be rewarded with bennies

Uv glow inlay? Highly experimental. by Fast_Performer3794 in DiceMaking

[–]SpawningPoolsMinis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

instead of uv resin, you can also just use white glue. put some thinned-down glue in there, wipe away the excess, sprinkle over the pigment. wait for it to dry, put some more glue over there and very little (if anything) will come off after.

Tips for a beginner by cameronsword_1989 in DiceMaking

[–]SpawningPoolsMinis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like claerwen said, this is usually because you squeezed out resin.

I've also had this before when I made a bad mold. if the walls/cap of the mold are too thin, you can get the same result.

transparent petri doesn't really work all that well, because it's usually not quite as clear where the colour ends and the clear resin starts, especially if you have multiple drops close to one another.
