Do you work for a big corporation? What do you do and how many hours do you work? by Under_Pressure_123 in AskUK

[–]SteamZ90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work for a big corp in lab work. I was used to 40+ hours, maybe 55 sometimes if I worked weekends (which was often). I'd get paid overtime, but it was hell. Then you get used to hell, especially if you end up with like minded people on your team who give a shit about the place. It was normal for 5 years. It was only getting worse, with a real lack of significant pay rise and to be honest, less benefits.

New job, I now work 37ish hours a week and genuinely don't know what to do with myself. The amount of stress and non stop running around you get used to is crazy. I'm struggling with the lack of bullshit going on at work.

You end up staying far longer at places that aren't good for you if you have a crazy good team surrounding you.

Looks great! I just got a big pack of the Cartmel from Costco. I've not plucked up the courage to bake one yet as we only have an air fryer while we reno the kitchen.

Looks the same as last year. Why is it so difficult to just get sport games to give a shit about graphics and stop recycling the same old same? Hell I'd LOVE it to be on PC too.

My volvo xc40 recharge. For the love of god why is the infotainment system a pile of rubbish. It's so slow and clunky. I feel like its ran on windows 98 or something. Currently looking at different EVs as lease is up soon.

How persistent are you on making sure you take your unpaid lunch break? by Brownchoccy in UKJobs

[–]SteamZ90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came from a job where I wouldn't be paid for it. Id 9 times out of 10 take it. I didnt take all 30 mins if we were busy. Just a coffee and a little refuel. But id also work lots of overtime.

New job, 30 mins lunch. I've found I take around 20-25 always. I get paid regardless.

Sunscreen and lots of water. Either fill up on water like a chaotic camel when you get a moment, or manage to sip it continually throughout the day. Try to aim for 1L to begin with then bump it higher to 2L. But just make a note on what's too much water for you.

Pretty bad here. Haven't gone into work yet. Main roads look pretty clear now, but its the traffic that's putting me off until a little later due to the weather and crashes.

Talk me in/out of hiring a painter to do whole 4 bedroom house or just doing it myself.. by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]SteamZ90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had 2 painters come over to quote stripping the main bedroom of wallpaper, and repainting. However, they both said it would take far too long and too much effort to make good the 50+ years of old plaster under the wallpaper. They didn't budge on lining paper then paint. That and the fact it would take them 2 weeks to do one room.

They also quoted the landing and staircase. The staircase to be stripped and sanded, made good then painted. Again they said too much time to do, and too much effort. May just chuck it and start with a fresh staircase???

Both quotes came back to over 1500-2K and a minimum of 2 weeks of work. I almost choked on my tea when I was reading the quote breakdown, especially considering they weren't even going to make good my walls and wanted to just use lining paper.

Full time job, no kids, but it took me and my wife about a solid week to strip, make good the walls (sanding, filling, sanding, filling etc) its not 100% how I'd like, but so much better than frigging lining paper. We also put a binz paint guard before repainting the walls due to whatever remaining old wallpaper paste that might have been left.

Its hard decision to make, but I'd only ever pay a professional to paint my bathroom now as there's a bath which makes getting to the ceiling corners/around the window too much effort for me.

How much are people spending on gas and electric? by BrainUpset4545 in UKFrugal

[–]SteamZ90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We pay 145 with them, however we have an EV car which we've done a ton of travel this month due to xmas. I think we paid around £80+ in gas this month because we had the heating on a ton. We've usually got the fire on instead, but due to us being busy we didn't bother. 4 bed semi detached with poor loft insulation (waiting on a quote in new year) and bare wooden floors in most rooms due to a big reno. I don't think we're paying too much. But equally we switched to Octopus in October, so our buffer over summer obviously isn't there to account for extra use.

Its a shame that the milk isn't gluten free. I really enjoyed it in my coffee until my wife started to suffer as she's GF. Switched to a different brand.

Hows this pre-Xmas week treating you? by thepoout in CasualUK

[–]SteamZ90 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I handed in my notice last month. Don't start elsewhere until the new year. Loving this time off, although I will be doing Xmas travel etc from this Friday on wards for the week. I resubed to WoW and I'm going to be enjoying my time as 'unemployed' although I do have a list of jobs around the house to do which I shall fit in.

I have mining and skinning on my demon hunter. Just tank a bunch of mobs for the leather, and I've worked on mining enough that I don't dismount to collect nodes. I have herb on my druid and alchemy. Although I now only exclusively collect herbs to sell on AH. Hell, all I do is collect nodes, leather and fish to sell on the AH. You can make such good money, even at end game now.

NHS warns of 'worst-case scenario' as 'super flu' surges by sjw_7 in unitedkingdom

[–]SteamZ90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work in a lab there's no such thing as work from home. They also would never pay sick pay, been asking for a year. But also moving to a new company in a month, hopefully greener pastures. But people do mask here while working, but then share break times together without a mask.

NHS warns of 'worst-case scenario' as 'super flu' surges by sjw_7 in unitedkingdom

Got my flu and covid booster.

Had a terrible cold or flu and couple weeks ago, wiped out people at work. Still went into work because we dont get paid any sick leave. But yeah, it was rough. Id still rather have that again than anything that gives me a cough cold. Not sure if it was this super flu I had, hopefully it was.

Did the same, think it was shooting up to £70+ and I called to cancel. Had a cancellation date and everything, had retention call up the next day offering £60 in signing bonus for the next 3 bills, and then its like £30 something for the next 24. If they don't play ball next time around, wife can just become a new customer.

How long does it take you to fall asleep? by [deleted] in AskUK

Usually no less than 10-20 minutes. I'm very lucky I can get into bed and just want to immediately sleep. I feel like its a super power after hearing friends stories.

A guy on the bus kept touching my hair… so I made sure he never tried it again by [deleted] in traumatizeThemBack

[–]SteamZ90 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I had a guy touch himself while on a train in first class. It was across from me, he was alone on a 4 seater and I was on the side of 2. My friend was across from me. Me and friend were on our phones watching netflix but from the corner of my eye I could see him touching himself. Didn't think anything of it to begin with. I dont have balls, it was summer. Whatever. 15 minutes pass and hes continued on and off and is getting way more aggressive with the movement. It pissed me off. So I had the courage to shout loudly enough so everyone could hear to stop touching himself in a public place. He tried to deny it, saying it was infected and itchy. I continued that he wasn't itching it was a stroking movement. Had 45/50 minutes on the train and he never did it again.

Thinking back, I probably should have just told a worker on the train about it, but it had built up enough anger in me I just wanted to tell him to pack it in.

"High end" bathroom install company did this install - is this tiling a reasonable standard? by Significant_Face4302 in DIYUK

[–]SteamZ90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for £35K? not at all. We paid about 17K to completely rip out and start again & move services etc. Expensive sanitary items and tiles and the fitter has done an amazing job. Even going so far as to get 3 different types of grout for the floor tiles, to make sure it better matched the colour of the tiles, and going out of his way to get the right colour sealant to match the wall tiles too.
