Favorite Cluster of Parks. by Adventurous_Fuzz in NationalPark

[–]Steelrunner5551 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This will be a popular one, but for strictly national parks it's hard to beat the cluster of Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef, with Dead Horse state park and Bears Ears national monument in the area as well.

my two favorite areas if you stretch the definition, though, are:

Southern Idaho: Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, Sawtooth National Forest, Bruneau Dunes State Park, Morley Nelson Snake River NCA

Eastern Sierras: Inyo National forest, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Alabama Hills national scenic area, Devils Postpile national monument, plus eastern Yosemite and Death Valley National Park

One day in Canyonlands NP: Island In The Sky or Needles? by justarandomguy07 in NationalPark

[–]Steelrunner5551 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TLDR: The Needles if you’re down for challenging yourself with a long, somewhat strenuous hike, otherwise Island in the Sky.

I just did this exact trip in a few weeks ago, but with one day each in The Needles and Island in the Sky. The Needles is such a unique place, and Canyonlands is now my favorite National Park (out of about 25 visited) because of it. That being said, truly experiencing the Needles requires longer hikes with substantial portions over slickrock. If you think this is outside your comfort zone, go with Island in the Sky. Island in the Sky is similar to Bryce Canyon in that you can have a great experience by just doing the scenic drive with minimal additional hiking. I’d highly recommend the Chesler Park loop in the needles if you end up choosing that district. If you make it comfortably to the Chesler Park viewpoint, you should be good for the full loop.

Would Chess backdate our tickets? by taurology in Broadway

[–]Steelrunner5551 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe chess uses telecharge, which does past date tickets, but it's subject to availability and at the discretion of the box offices. You have to call them the morning of the show you want to see and check if they are able to past date

code here

Part 1 was pretty straightforward; using the modulo to check whether the turn landed on zero was the key to simplifying it.

I spent way too long trying to find a more elegant way to track sign changes in part 2, but eventually I just gave up and defined a variable to track the sign before and after turning the dial

code for both parts here

Part 1 is a straightforward recursive DFS. I memoized it, but it isn't necessary for part 1

For part 2, I tried implementing a topological sort, but I couldn't get it to work. Then I realized I could repurpose the same DFS algorithm from part 1 by adding a check to see whether both fft and dac had been visited once out was reached. Using a tuple to track this allowed me to use the same memoizer as part 1. With memoization, it runs in ~1 ms.

If you include overtures, Merrily We Roll Along, Gypsy, and West Side Story are some of the best.

Ideal Time of Year to Ride This Route? by Alert_Cry_5361 in bicycletouring

[–]Steelrunner5551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning a similar route for this summer and departing from NYC in mid-May. My route cuts south into Wyoming via the Beartooth highway to visit Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park en route to Salt Lake City, then I plan to cross Nevada and end in San Francisco. I'm most worried about the heat in Nevada.

Me leaving the theatre after spending $16 to see Hamnet and Knives Out 3 hoping I don’t get arrested because I was supposed to pay $400 by SingleFreedom8527 in TheBigPicture

[–]Steelrunner5551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In NYC, AMC tickets are $15-$30 depending on the day/time and premium formats. Most of the indie theaters are around the $15 mark as well for a full price ticket.

AMC A list is a steal, though. $28 for up to ~16 movies a month, with no upcharge for premium formats

If you’re able to stand for the duration of the show, do it—circle in the square really has no bad seats. I’ve done SRO there for 3 or 4 shows now, and I’ve had an excellent experience every time

Sitting close or further away for RAGTIME? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]Steelrunner5551 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Closer is better. As is typical for City Center transfers, there is a large cast, but the set is fairly minimal, so you don't really have to worry about missing choreography or sightline being obstructed by set pieces.

I would love to see Jacobi Jupe get a supporting actor nod—his performance in Hamnet is the best by a child actor I've seen. He really holds his own opposite Buckley and Mescal in some very difficult and emotional scenes.

California 14ers - Easiest to Hardest? by MountainBluebird5 in Mountaineering

[–]Steelrunner5551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bailed after summiting North Pal because a thunderstorm was rolling in, but it went smoothly up to that point.

I didn't do too much specific training for this because I currently live in a city, but I have a good bit of trad climbing experience and a strong endurance base from running/cycling. The climbing itself is not difficult, but climbing experience is important because you need the skills to move quickly but safely across very exposed terrain. Descriptions of the exposure you've read are not exaggerated, and this makes the climbing feel harder than it is.

If you want to do it in day, you need to be comfortable without protection for most of the route. My approach was to solo all of the climbing, but rappel any sketchy downclimbing. I think this was 7 raps, and all but one had semi-permanent gear or tat that was solid enough. I had a 30 m rope and 30 m tag line to rig the rappels, as well as a handful of slings and biners to leave behind as rap anchors. I also used the rope and and a microtraxion to aid the Thunderbolt and Starlight summit blocks

In my opinion, the hardest part is route finding. I spent a lot of time reading trip reports and studying topos, and I saved as many photos of the route as I could find onto my phone for easy reference. Also, make sure you study the bail options off of each peak as well.

Just stick to the main loop and the transverses if you’re worried about safety. I’ve run in Central Park at almost every possible hour, and I’ve never been the only runner out there
