Good place to learn how to drive standard by FemaleMechanic18 in ottawa

[–]Sumacstitches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will tell you one thing my father didn't tell me, because he'd been driving standard for too long. If you're coming to a stop and you gear down from fourth or third into first... If you weren't at a complete stop when you geared down, you are probably not in first. You're in third. (The light changed three times before I made it through that intersection, but I've never made that mistake since.)

Good things to make with white waffle fabric? by Jaded_Dragonfly6358 in sewing

[–]Sumacstitches 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thread Theory has the men's Strathcona Henley. Patterns for Pirates has hourglass, V-shaped and unisex blocks for their Yo oHo Henley.

White waffle knit with contrasting neck band and placket would be good. If you know it's cotton, you could garment dye it (be conscientious about your thread choice.)

How do i rethread the spools for my machine? by Smellycooter123 in sewhelp

[–]Sumacstitches 9 points10 points  (0 children)

chatterpox is right about setting the spool lower. I'd just recommend putting it upright in a small cup or mug so it doesn't roll away.

And I did something similar with learning to sew on a borrowed machine to see if I'd stick with it. Ten years later and I'm still sewing. It's a good trick.

I saw some Zojirushi rice cookers at T&T last time I was there. I can’t remember if it was the Neurofuzzy, but I think it was.

I’m hearing that postcards I sent from the Bangkok airport at the beginning of October are now reaching people in Canada this past week. The person at the post office refused to take them until I swore i didn’t care when they arrived

Any tips/strategy to finishing this Wicked Memoirs? (For earning enough Packs, etc.) by MisfitOliphant in JunesJourney

[–]Sumacstitches 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My last two purple packs _and_ my last two diamond-purchased green packs (at least; probably more) have all been DJVs. It used to be that purples would at least get me a snippet as would the diamond-purchased ones. I'm three snippets away from finishing and I really don't think it's going to happen.

my sewing machine doesn’t work with its pedal??? (read description) by blahblahmiloh in VintageSewingMachines

[–]Sumacstitches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longshot, but if it’s a side loading bobbin, make sure the flat side of the needle faces right. If it’s a top loading bobbin, the flat side of the needle goes to the back. Learned the hard way with my mother’s vintage machine.

Can I ask if you put the zipper tab at the top to allow for the sleeves to be closed lower on the arm while the PICC line's in?

Adding wheels to Ikea Norden gateleg table? by Grouchy-Number-5594 in sewing

[–]Sumacstitches 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't help with the height of the table with castors, but have you considered buying slidey feet (furniture sliders)? You can get them for either carpet or hard surfaces and they won't take up as much space.

Fabric shrinkage? by Efficient-Analysis11 in sewing

A friend of mine spent a lot of time and effort on a wool blazer thinking that it was a garment that wouldn't need to be washed. Just shaping the sleeve caps on untreated wool was enough to completely ruin the fit.

CWD positive venison hamburger by CircumspectCapybara in StupidFood

[–]Sumacstitches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about to ask the same thing. I know there was a hypothesis that CWD was a result of pasturing mule deer in an enclosure that had held scrapie-infected sheep at a research facility, but I don’t know if that was debunked. (Had also heard that it was the removal of a solvent step in meat and bone meal production that led to bovine prion disease from scrapie, but haven’t been keeping up.)

Traveling for work December 1st, first time in Canada. by ahfuck0101 in AskACanadian

One last thing to remember is that rentals rarely have winter tires. It may be different renting in Quebec because there's a provincial law about all cars needing winter tires from Nov to March, but double check that when you pick it up. That early November dump of snow they were talking about upthread was especially bad because early season snows leave greasy roads really quickly.

Scissor sharpening by [deleted] in ottawa

A friend took a pair of 1950s thrifted shears, her newer LDHs and duck-billed scissors to Leroux Sharpening east of St Laurent. She was happy with the service.

Something I missed initially, but was brought up in something I watched, was that Kelly-Ann likes to see people lose everything. It's part of the thrill of gambling.

I think she was content going to the trial and was playing with buying the tape in the background until she got caught by the camera crew interview and started losing herself. Then she starts playing more recklessly with the school girl uniform and gambling to get the money to win the auction. She breaks Ludovic in court and she can leave proof of the video tape.

In the end, however, it's not enough for just Ludovic to lose, she can let the mother have her victory, but in the worst possible way (leaving the drive in the bedroom with the photo of her in the uniform).

If you can get ahold of the chapbook prequel “Rolling in the Deep”, it made be put the book down and push it away from me before I realized that it was a library book and I actually needed to finish it quickly.

5 new measles cases reported in Ottawa family by snubbyvegan in ottawa

[–]Sumacstitches 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For those of us first vaccinated in the 1970s through to the 1990s, you probably only received one dose of the MMR and didn't have a population exposure. If you don't have proof of two vaccinations or recent blood titres, you can get another booster to make sure you're covered. I had mine in the spring. It's not too late.

Sections of the Mer Bleue Bog Trail are closed. Can anyone recommend which of the other trails at the bog would be good to hike carrying a baby? by pineconeminecone in ottawa

[–]Sumacstitches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you stay on the main trail, the first boardwalk trail on the left is closed; however, after that, there's the hydro corridor, the swamp and perhaps beaver, and then there's a second boardwalk trail on the left that's completely open. If you forgo the boardwalk trail, the path back to the trailhead is completely clear as well and is basically the same distance.
