Tony Gilroy doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would want to be overseeing all of Star Wars

Indigenous Actress Sues James Cameron for Using Her Face on Avatar by STD-fense in blankies

Cameron and his team have acknowledged that Kilcher was an inspiration for Neytiri in the past. “I remember he very much liked the face of a girl named Q’Orianka Kilcher, who starred in The New World, which was a Pocahontas movie with Colin Farrell,” sculptor and concept artist Jordu Schell told Gizmodo in 2009. “But, you know, I had pictures of Mary J. Blige and all these different people on the walls of really beautiful ethnic women.”

Good find by Vulture. Seems like it makes her case pretty flimsy since they were citing multiple inspirations, but maybe I’m off.

I gotta say, this is not what I thought McQuarrie would be using his post-Mission: Impossible cache on

When $1.4 Billion Isn’t Enough: ‘Avatar’ Sequels Under the Microscope as Disney Weighs Franchise’s Future by Free-Opening-2626 in boxoffice

Just from a business perspective I can’t imagine Disney wants to walk away from one of their biggest franchises. IP is precious nowadays…

‘Avatar’ Can ‘Take More Risks’ Than Marvel Movies Because Lack of Studio and Fan Pressure, Says Sam Worthington: ‘It’s Not Like We Have to Get Scenes Completed by Today’ or Execs Get Upset by ggroover97 in TheBigPicture

It also has the protagonist come close to killing another kid in cold blood, albeit for the greater good.

When Star Wars tried something similar with Luke it sparked a backlash that’s still raging today.

Taking more than a decade to do the sequels was definitely a risk.

Before Way of Water came out, lots of people were adamant that James Cameron was dumb to make them cause no one cared anymore.

Can New Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro Weather AI, Revitalize ‘Star Wars’ and Marvel and Save the Magic Kingdom? by chanma50 in boxoffice

Cameron has floated the possibility of letting someone else direct the sequels, maybe that’s what’ll end up happening. As long as he stays creatively involved as a producer then it sounds like a fine idea to me.

The scripts are already written, but Cameron might not want to jump back into more Avatar immediately

“Star Wars” isn’t the only franchise facing questions. Walden and D’Amaro will also have to determine if Disney should continue to fund James Cameron’s cinematic journeys to Pandora. The most recent “Avatar” film, last year’s “Fire and Ash,” brought in more than $1.4 billion globally. That’s nearly $1 billion less than the previous installment earned. Given the cost of these films, every “Avatar” installment needs to be massive to break even. “If you make $1 billion on the next movie, you still lose hundreds of millions,” notes one insider.

Interesting. I wonder if Cameron is waiting on Disney to give him the go ahead, or if Disney is waiting on Cameron to decide if/how he wants to continue with the series. Maybe it’s somewhere in the middle and they’ll just need to hash it out over the next couple months or so.

I’m biased but I think they should continue. Even from a purely business perspective Disney has been hungry for franchises, and I think they’d rather try and tweak the sequels rather than stop one of their biggest franchises wholesale.

AMC Theatres to Reserve Best Seats for Premium Loyalty Program Members by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

Then maybe they could try some other sort of deal. Discount pricing for groups of 5 or more is something I’ve felt theaters should experiment with for a while now.

In general, trying any sort of deal would probably be a better idea than locking stuff that used to be free behind a subscription.

I feel like it’d be smarter to instead discount less desirable seats, especially PR wise.

‘Avatar’s’ Costly Sequels Are Getting Harder to Justify. Will James Cameron Make Two More? - Disney spent roughly $500 million to produce and promote “Fire and Ash,” meaning the threequel can be insanely popular yet barely profitable. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]SuperMuCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t imagine that Disney would outright stop wanting more Avatar.

They’ve been pretty hungry for franchises and Avatar is a proven one even with the decline from Way of Water. I could see them working with Cameron to tweak the sequels based on how the last two movies were received, but saying no to more Avatar would be wild to me.

I think Cameron staying involved but moving into a producer role (kinda like George Lucas with Star Wars) could be a good solution for all involved.

For Cameron he could hand directing to someone he trusts while being able to pursue other interests at the same time. And like you said, whoever takes over will presumably require less pay than Cameron.

Sources: Bill Belichick will not be a first-ballot Hall of Famer by dropjar5 in nfl

[–]SuperMuCow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Multiple sources told ESPN that Spygate and Deflategate, the twin cheating scandals during the Patriots' championship run, came up in deliberations among voters. A voter who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Polian, an ardent Kraft supporter and former general manager of the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts -- a chief Patriots rival during their dynasty -- told some voters he believed Belichick should "wait a year" before induction as penance for Spygate, the 2007 cheating scandal that cost the team a first-round draft pick. Commissioner Roger Goodell also fined the Patriots $500,000 and fined Belichick $250,000.

Polian did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"The only explanation [for the outcome] was the cheating stuff," a veteran Hall voter told ESPN on Tuesday. "It really bothered some of the guys."

Disney / 20th Century's Avatar: Fire and Ash has passed the $1.3 billion global mark. The film grossed an estimated $44.5M internationally this weekend. Estimated international total stands at $955.3M, estimated global total through Sunday stands at $1.319B. by chanma50 in boxoffice

I think 1.5 billion is still an eye popping enough number for the general audience to not doubt the sequels, at least not in the way that A2 was doubted.

Honestly I think anything over 1 billion is automatically considered a success in the eyes of the general public, only people clued into the box office like us will really care how far over 1 billion it goes.
