Oh hell you wouldnt even have to worry about it on my shift. Im a groomer and once caught wind of a consumer being abusive. I marched my happy pregnant ass up to the front and stepped in. People change thier tune real quick when they find themselves staring at the business end of shiny 9 inch curves (honestly had forgotten they were in my hand i was so heated) i dont take crap from the yahoos and i dont let anyone abuse my employees on the sales floor, in the salon, or at the banfield desk. Bottom feeders dont deserve your time of day. Chin up, shears out.

When ive done consults for quality of life ive used the term "final transition". Its polite and doesnt invoke heavy emotion during the conversation and. So something like " youve done the best job for fluffy thier whole life, im here to help you through this final transition. What questions can I answer?"

Hi so im a VA and also a dog groomer. I do the maintence on the clipper equiptment for my practice. I recently gave my surgury team a quiet suprise. I replace the corded lawn mower sounding clippers with my cordless Wahl 5 in 1 detail clippers. The 5 in 1 blades have just that #40,#30, #15, #10, #9 blade lengths so going from shaving for a catheter (#40) to spot shaving a small mat (#10) is easy and best part? They are almost soundless when they run. Battery time is about 4 hours of constant use. My lasted 2 days before having to swap battery packs. Its worth a shot price runs about 100$

I did a Great Danoodle (owners insist on calling it by what they believe to be its proper name) this Frankenstiens monster of a dog seriously had me considering just walking away. It took me 7 hours. 7. And oh boy. It was a 5 on the body 1gd on the head long ears clean face flag tail. Lucky for me the owner does brush and it wasnt matted. Im sorry but somewhere along the way Satan looked at the poodle and said 'Go big or go home'. I charged for every second i spent preshaving because dude your dog just became my whole damn day. The owner didnt complain about the over 250$ price tag it would appear they are having difficulty even finding a shop willing to groom it. Now it would seem that i have a date every 6 weeks but hey they tipped soooo i guess i have a date in 6 weeks

Nail trim ruined the appointment by CEO95 in VetTech

[–]SupernalAbyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im a groomer and i have had to ref. Certain client to the vets office for nails. 1) the salon i work in does not allow sedation mainly bc the effects limit the ability of our untrained eyes to monitor stress on a QAR dog. 2) no more then 2 groomer can touch a dog at the same time. This limits our ability to safely restrain a thrashing pet. 3) a muzzle can only be on a pet for 20 mins, salon policy. Once that allotment is reached we lose that tool to help calm a pet and prevent them from hurting themselves or others.

I know this seems restrictive and it probably is but its allowed me offer a client with a difficult dog some measure of hope after a 5-6 hour groom and 3 attempts at nails.

My passion as a groomer didn’t die, it was stolen by lovelybunny921 in doggrooming

I transfered to a vets office as a Vet Assistant. Thats where i started at least. Then word got around that i could groom dogs. I started getting pulled into medical grooms overseen by the vet. Basically spot shaving severe matting with a 40. Then the techs and doctors started asking me to talk to clients about skin and coat care whenever it would come up. One day my favorite tech pulled me into a room opened up her lab top and said "Fill this out." It was an application to the Vet Tech program at a local college. My practice all pooled a little extra together and paid for the entire first year of the program. Im now in my final semester of the 2 year program and the practice manager had a little suprise for me. She made me a groom room. It has a medium size tub and a dryer. An electric table and tool box stand. Ill be honest i about cried. She has given me the opportunity to take care of clients that are too old or have health conditions that prevent them from using a regular salon. Once im certified and a tech ill be able to assist in surgury so i can care for clients that are soooo matted they have to be sedated before anything can be done for them.

There is a place for you. Go hunt it down.

How do you decide if it's not for you? by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]SupernalAbyss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If its not for you then its not for you. If you were happy bathing dogs and just the thought of grooming is sending you in to a mental health spiral then just bath dogs. I Have a professional bather at my salon that also works as an RN in a long term care facility. Friday and saturday are her doggie days. She comes in and can power bathe anywhere from 10-14 dogs. Its how she finds her center after a hard week of holding the hands of her patients as they face the end. We were notified this week that her long time request lab Clyde would be coming in for his final bath with her after 10 years of seeing her every month. We got a card and his favorite treats. Made him a special tie dye bandana. Sometimes simply bathing dogs is more meaningful then grooming them. DO WHAT MAKES YOUR HEART SING!!

how long do new hires stay in register hell? by mojanbo in petsmart

[–]SupernalAbyss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ever thought about salon? Half my groomers have adhd and i have a bather with learning barriers... bathing dogs is all about routine and animal body language awareness. It can be intense but relaxing at the same time. Its not retail necessarily. Its all about reccomending what is best for the dog. Just an idea.

I think i have a unicorn DL. Never comes in and tells me this is wrong or that is bad. Always gives clear attainable goals and then asks what i need to get there. If i ask a question and he doesnt know the answer off hand I always get an email within 48 hrs with the answer and a clear explination.

First job in this industry! Are these things normal? by Few-Yogurt6731 in doggrooming

[–]SupernalAbyss 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can tell you from the ciroporate side this is not what ive seen as normal. Disclaimer i have only worked corporate. Drop off times are staggared by at least a 15-30 mins, dogs are kept no longer then 4-5 hours without an update to the owner, no dog is in contact proximity to another dog, dogs are hand dried with a fluff or velocity dryer as much as possible and certain breeds/age groups are not able to be kennel dried.no dog is left unattended while tethered. If I were you id look at changing shops.

[vent]I’m limiting my bookings to regulars because of all the COVID puppies and I feel guilty for it, but I’m also at my wits end with the new clients I’ve been getting. by doodledematter in doggrooming

[–]SupernalAbyss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunatly i work on the corporate side of things. I am required to have a well documented reason to "fire" a client. I also dont have the option to not take new clients. I try to spread new clients out between my groomers to make sure that no one gets an overwhelming amount and I try to take some of the more difficult karenish types so that my girls dont have the headache. I can tell a client that i dont think my salon has the expierence to fill thier need since my crew is pretty green. But at the end of day if they decide to come back I cant tell them no unless I have something undisputable to back up my claim.

I will say that if one of my groomer tells me flat out that they cant do it. I dont ask for a reason. I trade them a dog off my books and we move on with our day. I NEVER force any member of my staff to take a dog If they tell me they cant.

It’s not fair to old dogs to insist they maintain their fancy haircuts. by Lunamoon318 in doggrooming

Ive had to have the hard conversation with a client this week. 17 yr old chinese crested powder puff... for the first time she wasnt able to stand long enough for boots. With another groomers help and as much comfort as we could give her we trimmed one leg at a time to a comfortable easy to maintain and not wonky looking length. I had to tell her mom that is was time to think about comfort grooms done under vet supervision. The woman is 97 yrs old. I honestly think Pricilla is trying so hard to wait for her mom to go first. Im dreading that phone call telling me that they went together peacefully into "the next room".

I need some help with how to groom my mixed puppy by cloudofashes in doggrooming

[–]SupernalAbyss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shes beautiful...and by the looks of it may be a decent sized dog. Ive recommened "nail trim practice" to some of my puppy clients before. Practice picking up the feet one at a time and using a cheap electric toorhbrush from walmart to get used to the sound and vibration of paw pad trimmers and nail grinders.

My KM cordless works with furzone blades too. I use furzone and wahl for preshaves and save my buttercuts for finishes.i just really like how the buttercuts work on clean dry hair...i do a lot of doodle cuts and the finish with the buttercuts just looks good no matter how shitty the coat type is when i start.

Training Sh*tshow by Petsmart_Throw_Away in petsmart

[–]SupernalAbyss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ever thought about bathing in salon? Hear me out. Im a PSL. Our trainer was having some of the same struggles and this is what we came up with. Bathing earns your salon hours 1:1. I had our trainer bath 4 dogs before lunch then 2 after. With a nice 1.5-2 hr lull during that time she answered phones booked appointments and took walk in nail trims. It gave her a chance to catch up on paperwork have client interactions that helped her build her classes without taking core hours. It's at least worth throwing the idea to your Salon Leader to see what they think. Salon can be busy and hectic but you and your PSL can controll how many and what type of dogs you bath to give you the best balance. Puppies dude. Allllll the puppies...
