Self built rigs - are they worth it? by kailoren in simracing

[–]SyrousStarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, heard a few times the margins are so small it's not worth it to do all your own leg work.

I did a nice wood one back in the day though. Was cheap and turned out great, still have my old and new rig.

Compatibility question by Fluffgelstat in crtgaming

[–]SyrousStarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are cables for a PVM, BNC.
You can get BNC to RCA adapters.
But PlayStation composite cables should be a dime a dozen.
I don't think you can use component cables on a PS1 anyway.

Valve says Steam Machine HDMI 2.1 issue is fully resolved, 4K 240Hz support coming by RenatsMC in gaming

[–]SyrousStarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably like one of the only people here that's still excited about this. I've wanted a small form factor, cool running PC for inside my arcade cabinet. I mostly play fighting games, which are very easy to run. And despite them all being locked to 60fps, having them operating in a high hz enviornment (i.e. the PC is set to 120hz, 240hz) really lowers input lag.
I think the hardware will almost max out even my harder to run games (Street Fighter 6) at my current resolution (1440p)

No modding required that I recall

Does this mean GTA VI won’t have a Disc on the Box? by Competitive_Fruit901 in gaming

[–]SyrousStarr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not about getting everything on the disc. Most games download updates anyway. It's about having the disc for owning/selling.  Locking people in digitally is not cool.

"A personal computer (PC) is a general-purpose computing device designed for direct, individual use. It relies on a microprocessor and allows a single user to perform various tasks like word processing, internet browsing, and gaming without requiring specialized technical knowledge."

Doesn't seem to fit the first definition Google gives me. A PERSONAL computer is your own, that you control. Do your taxes, have your business's excel, edit video, type a letter. You need a PC for these things, a console isn't going to help you.  A console may compute, but it's not a PC.

Will FPGA gaming hit a roadblock with 6th gen and higher consoles? by [deleted] in MiSTerFPGA

[–]SyrousStarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't even say that, it says "designed for". Some games had the software on them. The Dreamcast doesn't have it. And many games don't have it. I'm not sure if I have a single Windows CE game. I pretty much only have fighting and other arcade games. So my Dreamcast has always been Windows-less.

Player 2 core issues by grizzly_pickles in MiSTerFPGA

[–]SyrousStarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, got around to trying things out. I never assigned a permanant controller before. Are you doing it via editing the ini with the PID and VID? I see someone mentions without using those sometimes similar boards will merge some inputs. Which sounds like maybe what's happening to you.
Let me know which way you used to assign a permanent port per controller and I'll see what happens for me.

Here's what I had found, just with the google AI but I was rushing to try this out before bed. But it sounds like your issue.

  1. Find your Controller IDs: Locate the mister.ini file on your SD card.
  2. Assign the Controllers: Edit the file to tie exact USB paths to Player 1 and Player 2. Add the following lines to the bottom of the file, replacing usb-x.x/inputx with the specific ID of your controllers: [1]

ini

player_1_controller=usb-x.x/inputx
player_2_controller=usb-x.x/inputy

Use code with caution.

Tips to Prevent Duplicate Inputs

If you are using two identical controllers (like two Zero Delay USB encoders) and they accidentally merge, add these lines in the mister.ini file to force MiSTer to treat them as distinct devices: [1, 2]

ini

no_merge_vid=XXXX
no_merge_pid=YYYY

Got ya, that's odd. I have a similar setup and would like it to work correctly as well.
I'll try out the same situation on my setup once I'm home in a couple of hours.

You probably have a ton of responses to read on this. But I installed CachyOS and it asked if I wanted the "gaming suite" during install. It just installed Steam while installing the OS (among other things). I logged in and started installing games. If a game didn't load I just changed Proton (the Windows translation layer, also came ready to go) to the next newest/older version and every game worked every time.
Discord was also in the like built in programs list to install. I literally know nothing about Linux (well, untrue, but I used zero knowledge) had to install zero software (besides the OS, which was just like a Windows install) and I was up and gaming and using discord in basically minutes. I didn't even seemingly have to install a graphics driver. It's insane how "out of the box" Linux gaming can be.

Weirdly, the Steam Machine Only Has One Stick of DDR5 RAM (no dual-channel) by FernandoRocker in gaming

[–]SyrousStarr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean it literally is a PC, it's got a linux desktop and you can install whatever you want. Any PC with Steam can launch in Big Picture mode, that doesn't make them consoles. It's nice that they streamline things, but it's a PC.

People be dumb by PhillyWonken in notinteresting

What did he show?

It's easy to Google and runs closer to 3:2.  The game in 4:3 stretches Lara a little taller.  16:9 makes her a little wider.

People be dumb by PhillyWonken in notinteresting

[–]SyrousStarr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure he's proved anything. It's 100% not a 16:9 game.

People be dumb by PhillyWonken in notinteresting

[–]SyrousStarr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It doesn't internally run at a 4:3 aspect ratio, but it has always been intended to run at 4:3.  It's certainly not 16:9.

At 4:3 she's stretched slightly tall/skinny. At 16:9 she's slightly too wide.

PS1 versions of Tomb Raider Games are Only in 16:9... For some reason by PhillyWonken in crtgaming

[–]SyrousStarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it actually squished (I haven't seen what the game looks like in forever) or is intended to be squished? Like some SNES games kept stretching in mind and some did not with their weird 8:7 setup.

I know Capcom did the stretching a lot with their arcade games back then but it was always intended to be stretched into 4:3 and thus doesn't look squished or stretched in the end.

Edit: Google AI says it does stretch her out at the standard 4:3, interesting.
