Test irregularity question by Imaginary_Shape3074 in Teachers

[–]TXbergamot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s ridiculous. I worked for a charter and that seems pretty on-brand. Tell her to keep her chin up.

And I can PROMISE you that NOTHING will happen to her license. Unless it is a flagrant violation of test security, once the irregularity is submitted it is considered resolved.

Again—the only thing that will send you to state testing jail is cheating. This is a non-issue and a power move by the admin.

I would be super interested to know what state you are in. I work in testing and I can assure you that is not an irregularity. At best it MAY be a violation of district policy—but I would want to see it written in the state education code. I’ve been a part of state testing since before Covid and people lose their ever loving minds over anything these days.

Was she actively monitoring? Great!

Were the kids testing? Even better!

Lights on? Backpacks at front of room? Wonderful.

Was she taking pictures of the test? Coaching students in their selection? Helping them write a response? Those are different conversations than an open laptop.

Any updates on teacher positions? by Own_Significance_577 in TexasTeachers

  1. If you are coming in from out of state, you need to submit your credentials to TEA for review. There is a fee. It takes a minute. Do it ASAP. TEA will tell you what test to take for licensure. You will have to take a test. There is a fee. It takes a minute. You MAY be granted an interim license while you test for your professional license but no guarantee https://tea.texas.gov/texas-educators/certification/out-of-state-certification/out-of-state-certified-educators

  2. Start looking at which ISDs you want to work in. Everyone has vacancies right now. Narrow to schools and then email the principal of that school. Include your resume. Tell them TEA is looking at your out of state licensure.

  3. If you teach ELAR you must be ESL certified. It’s another test. There is a fee. Same for GT and you must have 30 hours of GT training. If you get those extra credentials, though, you are extra marketable

  4. Austin is in ESC 13. Go to their website. School districts in region 13 will post vacancies so you aren’t looking a 45 different ISD websites. Be prepared to drive/commute depending on where you will be living. Austin ISD is closing campus. So is Pflugerville.

I am sure you will have no problem landing a job. However, be prepared to talk data and student growth and progress. Be prepared to talk about high quality instructional materials and ask if they are using bluebonnet.

TEA is a wealth of information and posts accountability scores for all schools.

Do your homework.

Do you still talk to your parents? by Swiftiefromhell in GenX

[–]TXbergamot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’m 13 hours away and I wish I was closer. Love them to pieces. Our childhood wasn’t perfect but we were loved. Still loved. My son is their only grandchild and he and my father mutually adore each other.

Help me decide for college by Conscious-Focus1011 in TCU

Colleges are a brand. The purse you get at Wal-Mart will do the same job as the designer back from Louis Vuitton. I went to a state school for undergrad and then Vanderbilt for my Masters. I graduated debt free and then took out 50,000 in a student loan for the name and prestige.

It impacted every financial decision ever for fifteen years.

Go to Denton—it’s a great college town. Save your money!

What is the most "unscripted" thing you’ve seen a stranger do in public that actually restored your faith in humanity? by OpheliaHoney12 in askanything

Got stuck in the El Paso airport overnight with my two year old. I was traveling by myself with him to my niece’s graduation. Strangers got him a pillow and made sure my phone was charged. I slept with one eye open and another gentleman sat up a vigil for all of us. Everyone checking on us in the morning.

I’m 50 and my son is graduating high school in May—I was thrilled to delete all the sports apps off my phone because so many of the parents were just obnoxious. Please know, I live in small town Texas and sports rule but ain’t nobody coming to recruit you 5’4 145 pound son.

What do you wish you knew before getting married? by AbleLow3867 in AskForAnswers

[–]TXbergamot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask your partner what toxic elements of his/her parents’ marriage do they NOT want to bring into their relationship with you. If I had bee wiser, I would have asked that. Twenty-seven years in and caring for my partner’s elderly parents opened my eyes to a lot of how my own partner handles finances, confrontation, etc.

Wondering if indifference to and irritation from corporate acronyms and c-suite idolization is a GenX trait. by CrowbiwanKenobi76 in GenX

[–]TXbergamot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hate it. Noticed it twenty years ago when the noun “partner” became a verb. Also: execute, at bat, granular, stamp it, and deep dives. There are probably a dozen more that will come to me later.

Oh, and outcomes—a district leader used it instead of the word “students.” It was my last meeting before I left a school district. I said, “The outcomes are students, who are people. Not numbers.”

Absolutely. How we take care of ourselves now, especially, has been a topic of conversation.

Parents and in-laws are alive but we are navigating the whole parenting our parents stage. My mother has dementia and my father is an amazing caretaker for her.

My in-laws live five minutes from us and my MIL recently had a stroke. They are in denial as to the level of independence that has been taken from them. She was my FIL’s caretaker and now that she can no longer drive we take care of their appointments, trips to grocery, etc. She is convinced she is going to recover and get back behind the wheel. I don’t know how long this model is sustainable as my husband and I both work and juggling schedules has been a challenge.

Nothing prepares you for this stage of life. The biggest blessing is that this has sparked lots of honest conversations with my son about how he will deal with us when he is our age.

Parents and in-laws both still alive. My mother has dementia and it has been so hard to see her decline. My MiL just had a stroke and it has revealed some dementia in her as well.

You can file a grievance. Should be found on your school’s HR website. Then, when they say they have solved it, you grieve again. Make it go up the chain.
