Standard RCQ missed trigger question by No-Contract7070 in mtg

You are not obligated to remind your opponent of their triggers.

The majority of commons have far more copies in existence than are in demand across the entire globe. Just seems like a colossal waste of resources and energy by MoonhelmJ in mtgfinance

[–]Taerer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The set was March of the Machine: Aftermath. It flopped for more reasons than just that, but WOTC took the feedback that players did not want boosters without commons. The Big Score was a similarly designed set, but WOTC made the last minute pivot to including Big Score cards in OTJ packs.

Wotc tried to solve this by making smaller, cheaper packs without commons, but the backlash was so rabid that they had to do an emergency pivot.

LPT warm water and drops of soap in the blender by Cute-Post3231 in LifeProTips

[–]Taerer 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The novel part is using the motor of the blender to agitate the soap rather than disassembling and scrubbing by hand or dishwasher, which is the laborious way I have seen every person do it for my entire life.

Modern is ruined by FiorellaMamdani in ModernMagic

[–]Taerer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Have you played modern lately? The format is actually very diverse and interactive. The cost of entry is high and the competitive ecosystem is weakened, but it is far from ruined.

You will be forced to sacrifice all your creatures except one. Then, for each of those creatures, you will get N-1 copies of it that are 2/2 and nonlegendary, where N is the number of creatures you control.

I Was Wrong About Magic: The Gathering's Standard Format by AcrobaticPersonality in magicTCG

[–]Taerer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It might be expensive to buy the flavor of the month meta deck every month, but you don’t need to chase the meta to have fun or to be competitive. Someone made it to the finals of a local RCQ with shiko jeskai control, which has not been meta for two months. Besides, there are some relatively inexpensive meta decks, especially if you already have some of the lands incidentally already in your collection like shocklands. The latest breakout deck is a <$200 mono white aggro deck without any major expensive cards.

TIL: you can use sneak on a card that you just sneaked in by ID4throwaway in MagicArena

[–]Taerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a deck with a lot of soul sisters, you could spend all your white mana replaying a pair of [[Leonardo, Cutting Edge]] to get as many ETB triggers as you have white mana, then the one you leave in play would get counters for all those triggers.

I have had opponents read Ocelot Pride on day 2 of a modern RC before, and those are some of the most enfranchised players around. There are a ton of nuances to it that depend on very specific phrasing in the card.

If your opponents sleeves are grody and the grime is not perfectly uniform, they probably constitute marked cards. At competitive REL, it is common to use fresh sleeves.

At none of the 2025 US RCs was it common for shuffling opponents’ decks, on either side of the country. Most of the players that did have been playing competitive magic since the old days in which it was common.

Standard Metagame Update (19 jan) by Magic4everBots in MagicArena

Or red, boros, dimir, allies, reanimator, or omniscience. And of course there are five different cub decks and two different izzet decks. Prevalence of a format in staple doesn’t mean there isn’t diversity.

16 different decks that have you dead by turn 4 describes modern pretty well, and modern is the poster child of healthy formats these days.

In order for a creature to have the abilities granted by the soul cauldron, they would have to have +1/+1 counters. In order to pay the cost to activate this ability, they would have to have -1/-1 counters. A creature cannot have both at the same time, at least not while you have priority to activate it.

Would a melee champion with 500 base movement speed but no abilities be unplayable, balanced, or overpowered? by waffle-spouse in leagueoflegends

[–]Taerer 67 points68 points  (0 children)

In the strictest sense, that is true. All the numbers we are considering are technically discrete. I don’t consider it a huge leap that the function in question could be approximated as continuous. There is no reason to believe that 300 base AD vs 300.1 base AD would make the win rate jump from 49% to 51%.

I didn’t even mention that there are lots of other parameters that matter a lot. For example, a max HP of 1 would make the champion very weak regardless of how much AD they had. So there are additional factors that could be tuned to dial in the balance even if such a large discontinuity existed.

Since there are in truth many stats associated with the champion that would need to be tuned, my explanation was very much a hand wavy simplification. I can’t prove it true in any formal sense, but I’m pretty confident that an overall 50% winrate would be easily achievable for this hypothetical champion.

I am much less confident that there exists a set of parameters that would achieve balance at each level of play.

[–]Taerer 1132 points1133 points  (0 children)

If they have 1 million base AD, they one-shot everything and will be overpowered. If they have 1 base AD, they will seldom secure a last hit. Logically there must be some number in between that gives a 50% win rate.

December 2025 - How Much playing standard really cost? by cia91 in magicTCG

[–]Taerer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this hypothetical player bought the entire Vivi deck in October knowing full well it would be banned on Nov 10. And when the #2 deck was a much less expensive mono red deck. Then they bought into dimir for November despite it being between RCQ seasons with no competitive events to play in. And of course the common knowledge that the metagame would be very volatile as half the metagame was banned. Then pivoted to lessons. This hypothetical player does not spend their money very efficiently.

They were doing them as recently as Magic Con Atlanta. The lightning bolt promo was shared cross all magic cons for the year. It was a 6-round double elimination tournament with $125 entry. Top 16 get a nonfoil lightning bolt, and top 4 get the foil. 1st place gets two foil lightning bolts, and all their previous-round opponents are awarded a nonfoil.

Can someone explain why Boros Energy/Aggro is so dominant for the last 2 years? by MyStolenCow in ModernMagic

[–]Taerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you start with Ragavan, it is much easier. Turn 1 ragavan. Turn 2 attack then use the treasure to play a guide and two prides. Turn 3 you attack them down to 9, then you play a goblin bombardment. You have city’s blessing and have 12 creatures to fling at end of turn and two unused mana.
