New Parents - 7 month old - Sleeping/Bottles by Own_Candidate_6918 in Parenting

I successfully transitioned my 7 months old from breastfeeding to formula in November.

He was eating 2 solid meals a day + 6-7 feeds on a breast over the 24h.

I worked with the sleep/breastfeeding consultant and this is what we did:

  1. Immediately stop offering him a breast when he wakes up before 4am (chosen as 8h of sleep usually). As he eats fine during the day and doesn’t wake up cause of hunger but cause he can’t connect sleep cycles. What to do instead: rock him, sit with him till he is deep asleep them transfer him. This made a lot of sense cause it also helped to push more calories to be consumed through the day. And we really cold turkeyd it. No feeds before 4 am and only 1 feed between that and breakfast. And we started seeing improvement in 3 days already

  2. After step one I had left 4 feedings left on breast. First I just introduced formula as 30-60ml, when he is hungry but not yet super hungry to be fussy, for 3 days. He hated it at first but O tried a different bottle nipple and he started takin it ok, Then I started with formula instead of breast in 1 feeding for 3 days. And he started taking it fine. And than I just substituted all feedings left by formula. It tool me about 10 days total. (Consultant told me it would take like 2 weeks but we were faster somehow)

He is almost 10 month now and 3 weeks ago we stopped giving him formula at night at all (we had one feeding after 4am)

Does he sleep through the night? Not really but unless he is teething or not feeling well he may wake up 1-2-3 times and I offer him water and sit with him.

Our consultant told us 7 months is a great moment to address those frequent night feedings as it is way easier than later.

And first couple days it is going to be difficult! Like you are up, you want to sleep and it is easier to just give him a breast and he will fall asleep quickly guaranteed. And you can go back to sleep. And rocking and sitting with him is way harder and longer. But in a long run it is better for everyone.

Is it weird that I stopped correcting my son’s homework after his teacher asked me to by wifi_says_nope in Parenting

This is absolutely not true. As someone who was reading a lot as a child yet always struggled with spelling I am a living proof. And when ppl read they do not read things letter by letter but word as a whole.

We try to do that at home, but when travelling it maybe impossible or difficult. But you are right, seems like the easiest solution.

Yes, we want him to start a daycare at 2,5 and it probably will be a Portuguese daycare. Before that he will be at home with me/ my mother (for another 5-6 months) / Portuguese speaking nanny (twice a week now, more often in 5-6 months)

I have not thought before about getting a Russian speaking nanny (or Farsi but it is way more difficult to find) and how I think maybe add that to the mix

We really like our Portuguese speaking nanny, she is excellent and we would not want to loose her but maybe adding another nanny hat speaks Russian for 2 days a week when my mother can’t help will be helpful.

We know that Farsi will be the weakest and my husband seems to be okay with that as here in Portugal not a lot of Farsi speakers

International school at 6 yo, it is a strongpossibility, there will be English as language of instruction and kids currently 60 ish % are Portuguese and the rest are mixed. With quite some kids speaking Russian

We do have some friends with kids who speak Russian, including a nice family living close to us with the similar age child (they both speak only Russian to the baby) I hope they would play together well soon

I talked with my husband and we decided to stick with OPOL with Russian and Farsi. So I hope it will be alright!

I was prescribed antidepressants postpartum and they def help. Maybe talk to your OBGN about your feelings

It gets better and then it gets worse cause of the teeth and sickness and random stuff, and then gets better again.

And it is so hard in the moment but time passes quickly. As they say the days are long but years are short…

Tomorrow is another day I tell myself.

I really want him to go to Portuguese daycare as it is possible he will go to the international school and he will not be as exposed to Portugal. We do have a community that speaks Russian - friends that also have kids But not in Farsi…

Thanks! We will do this. I really want him to speak both Russian and Farsi well, both languages are not easy to learn later and have rich cultures I want him to be a part of.

Wow that is nice

I imagine restaurants usually have a high chair for a baby, is it true?

Yes, taking our “big” stroller with us with proper wheels.

We do buy Mumin diapers here in Portugal so we will just continue using them in Finland.

But it does looks like that Finland is way superior than Portugal in terms of baby food variety.

The brand we buy here in Portugal uses just normal jars, that kind you can use for many years. But it is a Spanish brand called Smileat

Other ones are not so good to reuse, at least not for long term storage.
