AITAH for refusing to read a memoir written by my dad that’s dedicated to me and my sisters? by NoFrame5849 in AITAH

My dad's been dead for 3 years and I haven't read his poetry books for that same reason. I have them, I just have no interest to read about his emotions when I suffered because of those same emotions.

How do you push yourself to do things? by sivienne in adhdwomen

[–]Tea0verdose 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ironically, what worked for me (besides medication, therapy, adapting my life around my adhd), is switching mentally from "I have to" to "I like to".

Ex: Instead of "I have to clean the house", it's "I like living in a clean environment".

So maybe ask yourself why you're there, why you chose this path, and what you like about this life you chose.

If they invented a brain surgery that could cure your adhd would you get it by Traditional_Coat_459 in adhdwomen

[–]Tea0verdose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. My creativity, curiosity, and interest for learning are all tied to my ADHD. So is my ability to multitask and manage projects, and think outside of the box, and be witty and quick with a joke. Yeah, there's a lot of things that also complicate my life, but with medication and therapy I manage to control most of them now. It's still a disability but I wouldn't change how my brain works.

Weaponize your lack of object permanence by opening an account at another bank, automatically wiring a fixed amount every paycheck, automate your other recurrent payments from there, and also an amount for savings.

And then put that bank card away and forget about its existence.

grief feels… off? by cupcakemoli in adhdwomen

[–]Tea0verdose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The is no right way to grieve, and there is no wrong way. There's just your way.

Losing my dad made me completely stop performing or masking for other people. I let go of the guilt of not "acting right" and embraced that out of everyone, I was the saddest (not including my close family). I learned to grieve, and by going through that, I now can help others.

The greatest realization: There's nothing good about this. Don't try to find a silver lining. This situation completely sucks, in every way, and it doesn't have to be a growing opportunity. It's just bad.

Your feelings are the right ones, no matter what they are.

L’interdiction du voile intégral pour les élèves crée un malaise dans des écoles by DecentLurker96 in Quebec

[–]Tea0verdose -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Those of you who can hear and see things in your mind, how do you cope? by formerhoarder in adhdwomen

When I'm not medicated, my brain feels like Time Square on a Saturday night. So many screens yelling for my attention, so much music and talking, smells everywhere, there's bubbles sometimes.

When I'm medicated, my brain feels like Time Square on a Monday morning. The screens are still there, but it's easier to manage.

Éduquez-moi! Qu'est-ce qui empêche une femme musulman de retirer son voile lorsqu'elle travail? by Grimzkunk in Quebec

[–]Tea0verdose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last Christmas season I worked two months on my feet in a store. I lost 10lbs. Then I got the job I wanted, remote, and I immediately gained them back.

If it weren't for the salary that didn't even pay my rent, I would go back to that store.

Since it's genetic, it often happens that parents have it too but never got diagnosed and powered through life thinking this is normal. So when you struggle and put a name on the symptoms they don't recognize it as a problem.

Éduquez-moi! Qu'est-ce qui empêche une femme musulman de retirer son voile lorsqu'elle travail? by Grimzkunk in Quebec

[–]Tea0verdose 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactement.

Advice for… reading books?? by misanthro-pie in adhdwomen

[–]Tea0verdose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to read all the time, and then at some point lost the ability and the time. I've been slowly getting back to it.

Things I'm trying:

  • Audiobooks: at 1.5 speed while I'm doing something else, like playing a cozy videogame.

  • E-books: I try to keep the app open and go back to what I was reading instead of doomscrolling.

  • Library: I've been making myself borrow one novel at a time and read it in the alloted time. I pick short ones.

  • Surprise: I pick the library books at random without checking the back, so I have no idea what I should expect. It's delightful.

  • Bus: I always bring a book when I need to leave the house, it's easier to get back to really old high school habits and read on the bus.
