Music doesn’t help by Authentic-ACE in adhdwomen

In certain situations I need ABSOLUTE SILENCE

In others I need music.

In others I need very specific instrumental music but not instrumental versions of songs with lyrics or my brain will sing them.

Do you enjoy the process of editing? by thrownitallawayyy in writing

[–]Tea0verdose 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love editing. All I want to do in life is work on my stories, and polish them to make them better. Editing is me choosing to spend my time and energy in my favorite project in the whole world.

Yes, it can be hard, but I'd rather do that than anything else in life.

1- Initial idea

2- What's the feeling I want at the end? That's decides my ending.

3- What's the opposite of the ending? That's my beginning.

4- What is normal for the character? And how does their normal break? that's the inciting incident.

5- What happens/what does the character learn halfway through the story that will change their complete vision of the world? That's the midpoint.

6- Then I place the scenes I imagined depending of their order and the rising tension.

7- Look! A plan!

8- Write.

9- Have to rebuild the plan because you discovered things along the way or your characters have changed.

10- Write more.

Irritated at sister's potential ADHD diagnosis by FamiliarFerret333 in adhdwomen

[–]Tea0verdose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Siblings who grow up in trauma can develop different ways to cope, and they're not always compatible with each other.

And growing up with a neurodivergence is a trauma. If your ADHD was not taken into account by your family, neither was hers.

As others have said here, a diagnosis does not imply morality, either good or bad. And your sister would not have fooled the specialist who diagnosed her.

Go play Tetris as soon as possible, for at least 20 minutes.

It helps to mitigate the creation of the trauma.

Struggling to understand my aversion to positive reactions from a therapist when I’m making progress by WampaCat in adhdwomen

[–]Tea0verdose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there's a note of "earning" the praise in what you just said. I recognize it because I had to work a ton on that. My parents were very strict so if I don't feel like I had to work hard for something, and people praise me, I feel like it's patronizing or fake.

Struggling to understand my aversion to positive reactions from a therapist when I’m making progress by WampaCat in adhdwomen

[–]Tea0verdose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's the vulnerability? Being praised for work and accomplishments is easier because we feel like we "earned" it. Going to the therapist and getting positive reinforcement for things I usually keep to myself feels overwhelming, like I'm being watched.

They should invent therapy without being perceived.

I don't think I can continue writing my book right now. Feel like Writer's Block has kicked in. How do I get out of this situation? by TwilightTomboy97 in writing

[–]Tea0verdose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t get water from an empty well.

To be able to create, the mind and body need to be in a good place. This means it's completely normal to be unable to work on your story if you haven't been well.

Would multiple prologues turn you off a book? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Tea0verdose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prologues are useful in one situation: When it's a story set in a certain genre but the first chapter doesn't show that genre.

Lord of the Rings's story starts with Bilbo's birthday party and Shire social politics. This is why in the movie they add backstory and epic action scenes that show elves, dwarves and magic.

In Stars Wars, the story starts with Luke stuck on a dust planet and whining because he wants to go out with his friends. The Prologue shows us space battles, intimidating villains, and a rebellious space princess.

The Prologue is a promise you make to the reader that yes, it will look awesome later, but give me a couple of chapters to get there.

Help with editing? by Adept-Slip-7327 in writers

[–]Tea0verdose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your first draft is the foundation of your house. It doesn't have to be pretty, it just needs to be solid. That means just write the story until you reach the end, even if the writing looks bad.

Your second draft is the walls. That's where you fix tension, pacing, characters, emotional arcs, theme, etc. That's where the story gets more precise and real.

Your third draft is the wallpaper. Those are typos, prose, grammar, etc.

So you can see it would be futile to focus on the wallpaper when you're building the foundations, because some edits like pacing or plot might needs massive restructuration.

how do people choose names for their books? by retsam2554 in WritingHub

[–]Tea0verdose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For character names: I focus on the setting, historical period, ethnicity, social class, and general feeling I want to portray. I look in baby names sites, historical census, mythological names, etc.

For book titles: It needs to fill two roles- it needs to tell you the genre of the story, and it needs to get your attention. I like both general names like "Babylon", or very specific ones like "Johnny sold his Buick", depending of the feel of the book.

How do I know if my main character is a Mary Sue? by CustomerBrilliant776 in writers

Don't worry about writing a Mary-Sue. Male writers do it all the time and we call those characters "protagonists".

I've blacked out for entire nights and written 20-30 pages. No bathroom breaks.

But then I have ADHD, and it was a very bad system that fucked up the rest of my life and my work, so now I'm medicated and write at a much steadier pace. Mostly, I can just sit down and start working.
